The Kvarner Gulf , sometimes also Kvarner Bay, is a bay in the northern Adriatic Sea, located between the Istrian peninsula and the northern Croatian Littoral mainland. The bay is a part of Croatia's internal waters. The largest islands within the Kvarner are Cres, Krk, Pag, Rab and Lošinj. A portion of the Kvarner Bay, located between Cres, Krk, Rab and Pag is also called Kvarnerić or Italian: Golfo del Quarnerolo or Carnerolo, and the portion east of Krk and Rab is called Senj Channel. The bay is notable for its depth, which allows for the city of Rijeka at its northernmost point to have a sea port that can accommodate Capesize ships.

    The Valun tablet is an 11th-century bilingual and digraphic tablet, originally serving the role of a gravestone, found at the graveyard in Valun on the island of Cres. It records that under the tablet three generations of one 11th-century Valun family rest in peace: the grandmother, her son and grandson . Today, the Valun tablet is embedded in the wall of Saint Mary in Valun. Its bilinguality is important evidence of the coexistence of two ethnic and linguistic elements: old Romance and newly arrived Croatian.

    Vrbnik is a small Croatian town on the east coast of the island of Krk. The town is perched on a limestone outcropping 50m above the Adriatic Sea. Vrbnik is naturally separated from mainland Croatia by the Vinodol Channel, where the towns of Crikvenica & Novi Vinodolski can be observed across the sea. Since 1980 the island has been connected to mainland Croatia via the Krk Bridge. Originally a walled town, Vrbnik was established in medieval times. The town itself has a population of 944 ; there are a total of 1,245 people in the municipality of Vrbnik, which includes three other nearby villages (Garica with 149 inhabitants , Kampelje with 6 inhabitants , and Risika with 146 inhabitants .

    Lake Vrana , in the centre of Cres island, is a fresh water lake, 1.5 km wide and about 4.8 km long. The town of Cres has been supplied with drinking water from the lake since 1953, and the towns of Mali and Veli Lošinj received their supplies ten years later. It was thought at one time that the water in the lake was linked to some mainland source by underground streams, but it has since been established that in fact it originates from the atmosphere.The lake is one of cryptodepression characteristics.
