L'Anse Waterfront Park

L'Anse is a village in northwest Michigan, United States, and the county seat of Baraga County. The population was 2,011 at the 2010 census. The village is located within L'Anse Township. In French, L'Anse translates as the cove, a reference to its location on Keweenaw Bay, at the base of the Keweenaw Peninsula. French explorers sighted this area in the 17th century. They later established a Jesuit mission there and a fur trading post. The village grew up around it. The village is located within the L'Anse Indian Reservation, the base of the federally recognized Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, part of the Lake Superior Band of Ojibwa people.

1. Quincy Mine Hancock Michigan
The Quincy Mine is an extensive set of copper mines located near Hancock, Michigan. The mine was owned by the Quincy Mining Company and operated between 1846 and 1945, although some activities continued through the 1970s. The Quincy Mine was known as Old Reliable, as the Quincy Mine Company paid a dividend to investors every year from 1868 through 1920. The Quincy Mining Company Historic District is a United States National Historic Landmark District; other Quincy Mine properties nearby, including the Quincy Mining Company Stamp Mills, the Quincy Dredge Number Two, and the Quincy Smelter are also historically significant.

Travel information on the way always provided us good clues where to visit next. Always talked to campers and they gave us good leads to check out. Had a few stops in mind to start before the trip around Lake Superior.

Bond Falls: Accessible U.P. Grandeur

First, here's what the Michigan DNR says:

Bond Falls is a scenic and popular waterfall in southern Ontonagon County. The falls are created as the Middle Branch of the Ontonagon River tumbles over a thick belt of fractured rock, dividing it into numerous small cascades. Total drop of the falls is approximately 50 feet. Currently, roadside parking and picnic tables are available near the top of the falls. An accessible boardwalk with six viewing locations has been added to this location.

That last bit of info makes this a very special natural spot for those with mobility issues. A gently sloping paved path leads down from the parking lot to a fenced boardwalk. The views here are mostly taken from those viewing locations along the boardwalk that rings the base of the falls. Steps on the west side and dirt/rock paths on the east provide routes up the sides of the falls.

The drop of Bond Falls, in the southwestern U.P., is equal to the drop of the more famous upper Tahquamenon Falls in the northeastern U.P., though not as wide. But at Bond Falls you have much better access to the base of the falls.

There were quite a few families visiting when this was recorded, with ages ranging from elderly to newborn. If you are in the region, consider taking someone who normally has difficulty visiting scenic spots to see Bond Falls. They say the negative ions created by waterfalls are good for us. So is helping others.

Black Slate Falls, Baraga County Michigan

On my last day in the Baraga County in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I stopped at Black Slate falls first. By looking at my video, I can see I spent more time framing and taking pictures than videos.
Once again, the sun was rising over the trees and burning out the scenery only allowing me to shoot from one side of the waterfall. The golden leaves had been blown off the trees recently and were covering a great deal of the rocks.

Utah's Scenic Route 128 to Fisher Towers, Castle Valley

Here's the scenic drive along the Colorado River northeast of Moab, Utah. Route 128 follows the river through a canyon, then past some amazing scenery as it heads towards Interstate 70. This drive takes you to Fisher Towers, then the Dewey Suspension Bridge, which is now in ruins, following a fire several years ago.

I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).
