Patrimoni dell'umanità - Cattedrale di Chartres - Parte 1
La cattedrale Notre-Dame de Chartres, chiesa cattedrale consacrata alla Vergine (Notre-Dame), sita a Chartres nel nordovest della Francia (a 95 Km a sud-ovest di Parigi), è il più celebre monumento di Chartres ed è considerata uno degli edifici religiosi più importanti del mondo ed uno dei più perfetti edifici gotici. Il fattore decisivo che la fa prevalere tra le altre cattedrali francesi è il suo buono stato di conservazione, specialmente delle sculture e delle vetrate.
La figura più importante nella storia di questa diocesi fu il vescovo Fulberto, teologo scolastico riconosciuto in tutta Europa, che cominciò nell'XI secolo la costruzione della cattedrale sull'area precedentemente occupata da un antico santuario pagano.
L'edificio costruito da Fulberto fu distrutto nel 1194 a causa di un incendio ed immediatamente si cominciarono i lavori di ricostruzione, che durarono circa 60 anni. L'aggiunta più importante è la torre a nordest, la Clocher Neuf, conclusa nel 1513.
L'interno, alto 37 m, si caratterizza per l'armonia e l'eleganza delle proporzioni. La facciata occidentale, chiamata Portale Reale, è particolarmente importante per una serie di sculture della metà del XII secolo; il portale principale contiene un magnifico rilievo di Gesù Cristo glorificato; quella del transetto meridionale (costruito negli anni 1224-1250) si organizza attorno a delle immagini del Nuovo Testamento riguardanti il Giudizio Universale, mentre il portale opposto, situato al lato nord, è dedicato all'Antico Testamento e alla venuta di Cristo ed è famoso per il gruppo scultoreo dedicato alla Creazione.
Questa cattedrale si riconosce facilmente a causa della grande differenza tra le sue due torri:
* la torre sud è dotata di una base tipicamente gotica e sormontata da una guglia molto semplice;
* la torre nord, costruita in epoca più tarda e di architettura più complessa.
Grande luogo di pellegrinaggi, questa cattedrale e le sue torri dominano la città di Chartres e la piana della Beauce circostante. Esse si vedono da molte decine di chilometri di distanza.
Nel 1979 l'UNESCO l'ha dichiarata Patrimonio culturale dell'Umanità.
