The crash site of Paul Roche's Lancaster III LM455 BQ-T
On the night of July 28, 1944, the Royal Air Force launched a large-scale air raid to bomb Stuttgart. Participants included 494 Lancasters and 2 Mosquito bombers. But the German fighters intercepted the outbound flight over France, and enjoying a bright moon, shot down 39 Lancaster bombers. In the morning July 29, 1944, the LM455 bomber (Lancaster LM455 BQ III -T), flown by Paul Martin Roche, crashed near Blâmont without leaving survivors among its seven occupants. They were buried in the cemetery of Blâmont. The unit had only gained 318 hours flying and had never encountered problems beforehand.
