Loiret is a department in the Centre-Val de Loire region of north-central France. The department is named after the river Loiret, a tributary of the Loire, and which is located wholly within the department. The capital of the department is Orléans, which is about 110 km southwest of Paris. As well as being the regional capital, it is a historic city on the banks of the Loire. It has a large central area with many historic buildings and mansions, and a cathedral dating back to the thirteenth century that was rebuilt after being destroyed by Protestant forces in 1568. The Loire Valley is famous for its several châteaux.

    The Arboretum des Grandes Bruyères , sometimes called the Arboretum d'Ingrannes, is a private arboretum set within a 24-hectare nature reserve in the Forêt d'Orléans south of Ingrannes, Loiret, Centre-Val de Loire, France. It is open Sundays in the warmer months; an admission fee is charged. The arboretum was established in 1968 by M and Mme de la Rochefoucald, with first plantings in 1973. It is owned by the Mansart Foundation, and has received national recognition by the Conservatoire des Collections Végétales Spécialisées for its collections of Magnolia and Cornus. In 2004 it was designated a Jardin Remarquable by the French ministry of culture.     The Arboretum national des Barres is a national arboretum located in Nogent-sur-Vernisson, Loiret, Centre-Val de Loire, France. It is open daily in the warmer months; an admission fee is charged. Closure is planned for the end of year 2018 because subsidy from local and national government is too short. The Domaine des Barres was purchased in 1821 by Philippe André de Vilmorin for his studies in forestry. At that time it was almost entirely barren of trees, but Vilmorin planted today's extensive forest, primarily of Pinus sylvestris, P. laricio, and P. pinaster, as well as American oaks. In 1866 his heirs sold 67 hectares to the nation, on which was established a forestry school, and in 1873 Constant Gouet, the arboretum's first director, began the geographic collection on 3 hectares.
