Hiking and Paragliding Race Held in East China City

There was excitement in the air and on the ground on Saturday as Chinese competitors participated in a hike-and-fly race at a resort in Qingdao City of east China's Shandong Province.

The race was the first challenge of its kind ever held in China, which involved a total distance of 15 kilometers.

A total of 12 avid pilots participated in the event which started with a hike to the top of a mountain before some of them glided and landed on a designated spot to finish the race.

As the wind was not suitable for gliding, a few of them eventually chose not to wait but continue the hike to the finishing line.

Wang Jianwei, who hiked all the way during the entire race, claimed first place in the challenge.

It's my first time to participate in such a race, which is entirely different from all the races I've been in. First, it's a big challenge for your physical stamina, and then there is the challenge for your flying skills, said Wang.

The event organizer said the objective of the race is to promote paragliding in China and they hope that more Chinese will learn and participate in the sport.
