The Mariana Islands are a crescent-shaped archipelago comprising the summits of fifteen mostly dormant volcanic mountains in the western North Pacific Ocean, between the 12th and 21st parallels north and along the 145th meridian east. They lie south-southeast of Japan, west-southwest of Hawaii, north of New Guinea and east of the Philippines, demarcating the Philippine Sea's eastern limit.     Mount Lamlam is a peak on the United States island of Guam. It is located near the village of Agat , in the south-west of the island. Rising to 406 meters above sea level, the distance from the peak to the bottom of the nearby Mariana Trench is said to be the greatest change in elevation on Earth over such a short distance. However, because said distance is arbitrary and because different geological processes contributed to both the formation of the Marianas Trench as well as Mount Lamlam, this claim is contested.
