Ascoli Piceno Travel - Ascoli Piceno is a town and comune in the Marche region of Italy, capital of the province of the same name. Its population is c. 51,400.
Geography
The town lies at the confluence of the Tronto River and the small river Castellano and is surrounded on three sides by mountains. Two natural parks border the town, one on the northwestern flank (Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini) and the other on the southern (Parco Nazionale dei Monti della Laga).
Ascoli has good rail connections to the Adriatic coast and the city of San Benedetto del Tronto, by highway to Porto dAscoli and by the Italian National Road 4 Salaria to Rome.

Ascoli was founded by an Italic population (Piceni) several centuries before Romes founding on the important Via Salaria, the salt road that connected Latium with the salt production areas on the Adriatic coast. In 268 BC it became a civitas foederata, a federated city with nominal independence from Rome. In 91 BC, together with other cities in central Italy, it revolted against Rome, but in 89 BC was reconquered and destroyed by Pompeius Strabo. Its inhabitants acquired Roman citizenship, following the developments and the eventual fall of the Roman Empire.
During the Middle Ages Ascoli was ravaged by the Ostrogoths and then by the Lombards of King Faroald (578). After nearly two centuries as part of the Lombard Duchy of Spoleto (593-789), Ascoli was ruled by the Franks through their vicars, but ultimately it was the bishops that gained influence and power over the city.
In 1189 a free republican municipality was established but internal strife led dramatically to the demise of civic values and freedom and to unfortunate ventures against neighboring enemies. This unstable situation opened the way to foreign dictatorships, like those of Galeotto I Malatesta (14th century), initially recruited as a mercenary (condottiero) in the war against Fermo, and Francesco Sforza. Sforza was ousted in 1482, but Ascoli was again compelled to submit to the Papal suzerainty. In 1860 it was annexed, together with Marche and Umbria, into the newly unified Kingdom of Italy. • Park Peaks Here in the heart of the Sibillini Mountains ten peaks soar above 6,560 feet (2,000 meters), led by Mount Vettore, which tops out at 8,123 feet (2,476 meters). The mountainous slopes that reach these dizzying heights are cut by narrow valleys and rushing rivers before giving way to pastoral alpine landscapes below the tree line.
• Plants and Animals The park is home to 1,800 plant species and a wild bouquet of mountain flowers including edelweiss, pasqueflowers, martagon lilies, bearberries, and various orchids. Animal life includes wolves and wild mountain cats as well as prickly porcupines. Roe deer have recently been reintroduced. Golden eagles, peregrine falcons, eagles, owls, goshawks, snow finches, and sparrow hawks fill the skies. And small invertebrates are among the more interesting inhabitants—several live nowhere else on Earth except in a lake here.
• Local Flavor The Sibillini Mountains have some outstanding culinary offerings. Perched between the Marches and Umbria, a smorgasbord of cured meats is always on offer. Other tasty local fare includes apples, honey, truffles, mushrooms, chestnuts, chickpeas, and vin cotto or cooked wine.
How to Get There
Trains stop in Ascoli Piceno, Spoleto, and Camerino. Bus routes also serve these towns and reach Fermo as well.
When to Visit
Winters in the mountains are cold and snowy yet beautiful, especially to cross-country skiers and other winter sport enthusiasts. And the region's thermal springs are especially welcome at this time. Spring brings the blooming of alpine flowers, and when truly warm weather hits the entire spectrum of outdoor activities is in full swing.
How to Visit
Monti Sibillini National Park is an adventure sport center. Mountain biking, horseback riding, hang gliding, paragliding, and climbing are all popular activities here. But other visitors happily stick to town streets and enjoy the artistic, cultural, culinary, and historic traditions that have arisen and endured here over the centuries.

PUGLIA, ITALY
Some of the best beaches in mainland Italy are in Puglia – particularly in a string of pristine sandy strands south of the historic towns of Avetrana and Manduria, the latter famous for its Primitivo wine. For white sand, translucent water and informal beach-shack lunches, head for the seaside villages of Punta Prosciutto (“Ham Point”) or Torre Colimena. The scene is molto informale, with families from Lecce, Taranto or Bari coming down for the day and either draping their beach mats on the sand or renting a sunlounger under an ombrellone. The nearby town of Porto Cesareo has the best selection of hotels, but it’s also worth looking at agriturismi or country hotels just inland – like the very chic Masseria Potenti.
SAN FRUTTUOSO, LIGURIA
If you’ve seen the Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon divertissement The Trip to Italy, you may remember that one of their competitive Michael Caine-impression sessions was set on the terrace of a restaurant-pensione overlooking an idyllic cove, with a beachside medieval abbey as a backdrop. This magical place is called San Fruttuoso, and it’s in Liguria, around halfway by boat between chi-chi Portofino and the family resort of Camogli. To get there, you either trek across the Portofino promontory, or get a ferry (timetables at golfoparadiso.it). Portofino has its fair share of hotels including Belmond Hotel Splendido, perhaps the most famous in the region, as well as Eight Hotel Portofino and Hotel Piccolo Portofino. Further towards Santa Margherita Ligure, Hotel Argentina offers a more affordable base for exploring the area. As for Da Giovanni – the only place to stay in the cove – don’t expect luxury. The food is good, unrefined trattoria fare – with an obvious seafood slant – and the seven bedrooms are on the spartan side.
TROPEA, CALABRIA
Calabria doesn’t feature anywhere like as prominently as Sicily or Puglia in Italian summer-sun brochures. The barely regulated sprawl that clutters up much of the coast is one reason. But there are honourable exceptions – like Tropea, a classy enclave that is the region’s answer to Positano or Taormina. The old town, full of good trattorias and shops, garlands a rocky outcrop above a gently shelving sandy beach, which is popular with families. Tropea’s evening passeggiata is one of Italy’s busiest and most snail-paced – perhaps because of the sweet distraction of the historic ice-cream emporium Gelati Tonino (Corso Vittorio Emanuele 52) halfway along. The crazier flavours here include onion and cuttlefish; we recommend the lemon granita. Stay at the Hotel Rocca della Sena for access to Tropea beach via a private stairway and a gorgeous terraced garden with whirlpool tubs overlooking the Aeolian Islands.

A summer magnet for families and couples from Palermo and Trapani, this dramatically located resort town not far from Trapani airport is a familiar name for Mediterranean yachties, but otherwise little known in the UK. And long may it stay that way: there are no Taormina-style tourist souks here, just a lively, low-rise garden town panning out along a two-mile sweep of sand dominated, at its northern end, by the vertiginous peak of Monte Monaco. Centuries of Arab influence have left their mark on the local cuisine: couscous, not pasta, is the default carb – there’s even a Cous Cous Fest in September. Regular boat tours head around the promontory to the Zingaro nature reserve and the cute village of Scopello, whose ancient port and tonnara (tuna fishery) have featured in several films – among them Ocean’s Twelve. Timbuktu Hostel in central San Vito lo Capo is just 12 minutes' walk from the beach and boasts a private terrace with views towards the mountains and the sea.

А в осенний период море выбрасывает обломки коралловых веточек, которые смешиваются с песком и придают ему красноватый оттенок, и, огромное количество разнообразных ракушек, которых в летнее время днём с огнём не сыщешь.
Пляж пологий, спуск в воду постепенный.
Всё необходимое имеется – зонтики, шезлонги; предусмотрены даже специальные зоны для людей с ограниченными возможностями.
Город был построен в XIII веке как форпост Эриче.
Настоящее село начало формироваться в XVIII веке, вокруг древнего святилища великого мученика Sav Vito, покровителя города. Первоначально это была крепость сарацин, которые изменили уклад города и присвоили ему имя святого. Тем не менее, город сохранял внешний вид крепости, чтобы защитить паломников, которые просили гостеприимства у него.
Арабские корни отразились на архитектуре города, которая выражается в простых постройках домов с синими ставнями, украшениями из керамики. Отсюда можно совершить прогулку до заповедников Zingaro (в летний период из порта отправляются экскурсионные лодки), Monte Cofano (Монте Кофано) и Scopello (Скопелло), Cala Mancina (Кала Манчина), в лагуне которой можно полюбоваться рыбками безо всякого оборудования, посетить гроты (Grotta dei cavalli), а также подняться на гору Monte Monaco (Монте Монако) и оставить свой привет на вершине горы.
Надо отметить, что с San Vito Lo Capo больше едут за пляжно-развлекательным отдыхом.
Главная артерия города – улица via Savoia. В летний сезон ночная жизнь тут кипит, и, если вы планируете тихий спокойный отдых, лучше селиться подальше от центра. Музыка громыхает так, что слышно и на соседних улицах. Отелей, вилл, в городке полно.
Сан Вито Ло Капо очень популярный курорт не только среди самих итальянцев, но и немцев, англичан, французов, очень много русских и выходцев со стран СНГ. Город живет вечным летним праздником. Пробуждаясь от зимней спячки в апреле, и до самого октября, жизнь здесь кипит. Самый пик наступает в августе, когда на пляже, несмотря на его протяжённость (3 км) яблоку негде упасть.
В сентябре проходит фестиваль кус-куса, а в октябре праздник, что-то типа прощания с летом, где устраивают огромный костёр. После этого туристов становится всё меньше и меньше, и город буквально «умирает» …

It is a festival of rural tradition, which originated from the desire to offer a tribute of grain to Our Lady Mother Mary to thank for the good harvest obtained. The festivities begin on Saturday to develop throughout the day of Sunday: parade of canestrelli sound of accordions, singing the starling, and finally parade of floats through the streets of the country. The chariots made with sheaves of grain, shall be arranged by the various districts with themes inspired by the whole history of the grain, from sowing to baking bread. For several years, one of these wagons will be set up by foreigners residing in the territory. British citizens in general, much like those participating in the festive atmosphere and be protagonists. All the streets are decorated with bunches of wheat.During the festivities you can enjoy typical cuisine of the local tradition
