Murrisk is a village in County Mayo, Ireland, on the south side of Clew Bay, about 8 km west of Westport and 4 km east of Lecanvey. Murrisk lies at the foot of Croagh Patrick and is the starting-point for pilgrims who visit the mountain. Every year, on the last Sunday of July, thousands of people converge on the village to make the pilgrimage. There is a small interpretative centre in the village, which focuses on Croagh Patrick. The name is also used for the entire district south to the fjord of Killary Harbour. This barony runs from Westport and also includes Louisburgh and Lecanvey; there is also at least one abandoned village, Uggool.

The Burren is a region of environmental interest primarily located in northwestern County Clare, Ireland, dominated by glaciated karst landscape. It measures, depending on the definition, between 250 square kilometres and 560 square kilometres . The name is most often applied to the area within the circle made by the villages of Tubber, Corofin, Kilfenora, Lisdoonvarna, and Ballyvaughan, and Kinvara in extreme south-eastern Galway, including the adjacent coastline..A part of the Burren forms the Burren National Park, the smallest of the six National Parks in Ireland, while the full Burren and adjacent territory including the Cliffs of Moher are included in the Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark.

EuroVelo 1: Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way

(Contents see below) The EuroVelo 1 runs through the Republic of Ireland for almost a thousand kilometers. The first half of the cycle route leads from Donegal on the wild Atlantic coast to Galway. Nonexistent bike paths, lots of hills and even more rain, these are the small disadvantages. Great landscapes, friendly people and pubs full of music - the benefits prevail clearly.

Deirbhle’s Twist – Ireland’s Stonehenge near Blacksod Pier (Mayo County)

Did you know that Ireland has it’s own version of Stonehenge? :) It’s called Deirbhile’s Twist and it is in County Mayo. It is a part of North Mayo's sculpture trail near the Blacksod pier.

Anyway, unlike the Stonehenge, Deirbhile’s Twist has no history. It is just a circle made from local granite stones in a spiral twist with 22 stepping stones.

Deirbhile’s Twist is the last part of the sculpture trail through North Mayo. It was made by Artist Michael Boffin sculptor.

Reek Sunday Tips: Walking Croagh Patrick

This Sunday, Reek Sunday, the CaminoWays.com team is heading to Westport to climb Croagh Patrick, Ireland's Holy Mountain.

Our Camino prep walk takes place on a very special date, with thousands of pilgrims visiting the Reek on this day.

Here are some essential tips and notes ahead of our walk in Mayo:

1-Bring proper walking shoes (comfortable)

2-Bring a day bagpack with enough water and food

3-Wear appropiate clothing (pack rain gear in case)

4-Check the forecast ahead of heading to Mayo

5-It will be a busy day, so arrive early

6-The climb to Croagh Patrick is estimated to take 2 hours but allow plenty of time

7-The mountain is 750meters so pace yourself, walk at your own rythm

8-Bring a walking stick for support

9-Bring sun block

10-Where to find us: We will have a CaminoWays.com stall at the bottom of Croagh Patrick so look out for us. We will meet there at 10am to start our walk at 10,30am.

Croagh Patrick is just outside the town of Westport, in County Mayo. From its summit you can enjoy stunning views of Clew Bay with its 365 islands and the Mayo countryside.

Pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick goes back over 5,000 years. It was also an important place for pagans who are believed to gather at Croagh Patrick to celebrate the beginning of harvest season.
