Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, the town is located at the point where Rye Dale leaves the moorland and joins the flat Vale of Pickering. It is situated on the River Rye on the A170 road, 14 miles east of Thirsk, 13 miles west of Pickering and some 24 miles due north of York. The southern boundary of the North York Moors National Park passes through Helmsley along the A170 road so that the western part of the town is within the National Park. An early motte and bailey or ringwork Norman castle was built on the Framlingham site by 1148, but this was destroyed by Henry II of England in the aftermath of the revolt of 1173–4. York Landmarks, North Yorkshire, England

York is filled with interesting things to see. We start by walking the city walls and visiting the Bars (or gates). The Romans built walls here centuries ago, and remnants of their work still appear.

Back into the city we visit the Merchant Adventurer's Hall, a medieval guildhall, still used today for important civic business. It wasn't all about money - these organizations also supported hospitals, education and other charities.

A short walk away we visit Clifford's Tower, (or Cliffort's - depending on the source). This fortress, built on an artificial mound, has been a central military defense for about 1000 years. Of course it's changed over the centuries, and the surviving edifice looks like it could lean-over at any moment. The location makes for wonderful views of the city.

I couldnt believe this exists in England! We visited a bunch of sites around the like district. Like ribblehead viaduct, yorkshire dales national park, white scar caves, and malham cove!
