The first race was organized by ' Motor Club Shafts and Environs 'on July 11th 1925 on a trail with a length of 28.4 kilometers. Not a smoothed circuit , but clinker roads between Drenthe villages. During this first race was even a piece of dirt road included in the route. The route ran over Borger , Schoonloo and Grolloo . The first race was won by Piet van Wijngaarden on a 500cc Norton with an average speed of 91.4 kilometers per hour.
The years the race was held on a street circuit which then led along the following points: The Hair, Bartelds bend (at Assen), Oude Tol (halfway Hooghalen) Hooghalen , Laaghalen , Laaghalerveen .
In 1951 the Italian was Umberto Masetti with his 500cc Gilera a fastest lap with an average of 161.4 km / h. In 1954 the British came Geoff Duke to 169.7 km / h, but was then part of the journey between Assen Hooghalen asphalted. Until 1955 it was used this old track, then the new circuit was inaugurated, whose current permanent circuit a (small) part.
The old track is now bisected by the A28 .
In 1955 the new circuit with a length of 7705 meters was put into operation. This resulted in an unprecedented registration of participants.
In 2005 and 2006 until now 6027 meters was shortened circuit thoroughly renovated. The northern loop of the circuit was largely removed and thus shortened the total length of more than one kilometer. This came on the north side of the circuit a compact structure to oversee well as the surrounding stands. The bends of the new part were given the names of the old bends. The current circuit has a length of 4545 meters and a width of 10 meters. The longest straight is 970 meters final.
In most of the many turns the running road surface down to the inside. This, together with the very stiff asphalt, is that there are high cornering speeds are possible. This Assen is a real drivers' circuit and the riders with the most daring and experience are clearly in favor. Even when the road is wet grip remains high.
On August 3, 2007 lap record was broken by Jos Verstappen . With A1GP -bolide he set a time of 1.32.824. Because of the merger between the Champ Car World Series and the Indy Racing League was the arrival of the Champ Car to Assen a single adventure: in 2008 there were no races in Europe of the new class, IRL Indy Cars.
After a successful debut in 2010 came in June 2011 the Superleague Formula at Assen for the opening race of the season. Furthermore, there is made a change again in 2010 to the circuit. Sighted.¨ Ruskenhoek 'has changed and become faster, but the length of the circuit is therefore shortened to 10 meters. The modified process is still used during races.
Due to the high investment costs the TT circuit can not survive only by motorcycle. Therefore, there are other activities on site. So it's Truckstar Festival since 1986 an annual event in the last weekend of July. Nowadays there are also held concerts next motorbike and car races. In 2009 the prologue was the Tour of Spain (Cycling) on the track instead.
In 2010, the TT Run got there in a running event for professionals, amateurs and businesses.
Between 28 September and 7 October 2011 held Defence the massive exercise Falcon Autumn . Here, the circuit played a central role as fictional airport, which had to be conquered and served as a base for operations in the area.
