  • 1. Lac de Pradelles-Cabardes Pradelles Cabardes
    The Lac de Montbel is a reservoir 5 minutes from Chalabre, which is a popular location for watersports and swimming. It is located at Sainte-Colombe-sur-l'Hers on the border between the Ariège and Aude départements of southeastern France. The flooded hillsides are still evident when the water level drops, revealing tree stumps and the thick sticky clay so typical of the Ariège. On quiet hot summer days the water takes on a beautiful turquoise colour which is very photogenic. The area is relatively undeveloped and quiet and privacy are a great attraction. The mountains of the Pyrenees are visible in the background. Other lakes for swimming near Montbel include Lac de la Cavayère and a smaller one at Pradelles-Cabardès. The dam which created the reservoir was built between 1982 and 1985...

  • 2. Canal du Midi Occitanie
    The La Nouvelle branch is a 37.3-kilometre branch of the Canal du Midi in Aude, southern France which runs from the Canal du Midi through Narbonne and on to the Mediterranean. It is made up of three waterways: the first 5.1 kilometres is the Canal de Jonction from the Canal du Midi to the Aude, the second section is 800 metres of the Aude itself and the third is the 31.6 kilometres Canal de la Robine which enters the Mediterranean at Port-la-Nouvelle. The La Nouvelle branch is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Canal du Midi and is managed by the French navigation authority, Voies navigables de France.
