When one thinks of destinations for train travel Sri Lanka is not on the top or even on most people's list, a shame because this small island nation is home to some of the most scenic and well preserved railways on the planet. In many places it seems time stands still as trains as still controlled by tokens and semaphore signals, a system that is the envy of any heritage railway but even better, its all still real! Our trip today will be on Sri Lanka's first railway, the mainline which runs from the countries capital in Colombo to the upcountry city of Kandy. We will travel on the double track high speed commuter line and then onto the twisty mountain railway into the Allagala mountain range. We will stop at many points along the way and get a firsthand look at the time honored token exchange process. So come along for this visit to one of the mot fascinating rail systems in the world.

Trip #5 | Solo in Sri Lanka

For my fifth solo trip, I ventured out of Europe and went to Sri Lanka.

The nature, the food, the people (most of them); Sri Lanka is such a beautiful country and I'm so glad I went there on my first visit to Asia.

I was there during the attacks, which was obviously tough, but the locals were resilient and showed incredible pride in their country and kept their spirits up.

If you're thinking about visiting Sri Lanka, DO IT.

Mighty Alagalla SriLanka

Alagalla is situated right at the provincial boundaries of Central and Sambaragamuwa Provinces. In fact Kegalle and Kandy district boundary goes very close to the peak of Alagalla. Anyone who travels to Kandy from Colombo by train will surely recognize this imposing mountain on to your left as you pass Ehala Kotte railway station. Ehala Kotte is situated 3 stations after Rambukkana and 2 stations before Kadugannawa.
The mountain face towards Ehala Kotte is a sheer drop as seen in the picture above, so scaling it from that side is impossible. So we had to walk right around the mountain and reach a small village called Poththepitiya. The actual climb started off from there, yet the journey up to Poththepitiya was quite interesting with some scenic views towards Kadugannawa and beyond along the path.
The peak of the mountain is about 1100m above sea level and the total climb from Ehala Kotte is about 800m. This particular mountain stands tall among relatively smaller mountains in the vicinity, as it is positioned just outside the central highlands. The result is some breathtaking scenery at the top and along the path up the mountain!

Pinnawala, which is situated in Rambukkana, is especially famous for the elephant orphanage, which is under the Great care of the Zoological department of Sri Lanka.

There are nearly 63 elephant living in this unique location. The utilized area for this place is approximately 23 acres of cultivated land, which is carefully designed to the desirable ways required by the Elephants. The place creates a natural habitat for the orphaned elephants. For those who desire to watch or feed the elephants or even watch them have a bath could visit the place during the following time.
