1. Les Fortifications de Rocroi Rocroi
Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, Seigneur de Vauban and later Marquis de Vauban , commonly referred to as Vauban , was a French military engineer who rose in the service to the king and was commissioned as a Marshal of France. Considered the foremost engineer of his time, Vauban is known for his skills both in designing fortifications and breaking through them; his concepts, inspired by Pagan's Les Fortifications, were the dominant model of fortification and siegecraft for nearly 100 years. He also advised Louis XIV on how to consolidate France's borders in order to make them more defensible. Vauban made the radical suggestion of France giving up some land that was indefensible in order to create a stronger, less porous border with its neighbours.

2. Ouvrage de la Ferte La Ferte Sur Chiers
Ouvrage La Ferté, also known as Ouvrage Villy-La Ferté, is a petit ouvrage of the Maginot Line, located in the Fortified Sector of Montmédy, facing Belgium. The ouvrage lies between the towns of Villy and La Ferté-sur-Chiers. It possesses two combat blocks linked by an underground gallery. The westernmost position in its sector, it was a comparatively weakly armed fortification in an exposed position that left it vulnerable to isolation and attack. After a sustained attack during the Battle of France the position was overwhelmed by German forces and was destroyed with its entire garrison killed. The fighting at La Ferté was the heaviest of any position in the Maginot Line. It is preserved as a war memorial.

3. Fort Douaumont Verdun
Fort Douaumont was the largest and highest fort on the ring of 19 large defensive works which had protected the city of Verdun, France since the 1890s. By 1915, the French General Staff had concluded that even the best-protected forts of Verdun could not resist bombardments from the German 420 mm Gamma guns. These new super-heavy howitzers had easily taken several large Belgian forts out of action in August 1914. Fort Douaumont and other Verdun forts were judged ineffective and had been partly disarmed and left virtually undefended since 1915. On 25 February 1916, Fort Douaumont was entered and occupied without a fight by a small German raiding party comprising only 19 officers and 79 men. Battle for Grolle (1627) - reenactment & festivities 2017

Visiting one of the largest 17th-century re-enactments in the world: the Siege of Grol in the Netherlands, when the old fortress town of Groenlo reverts to how it used to be 390 years ago, when Dutch and Allied forces recaptured the city from the Spanish in the Eighty Years' War. The first part of the video shows the impressive battle re-enactment with around 1,600 re-enactors originating from most of the nations that took part historically, such as the Netherlands, Spain, England, Scotland, France, Germany, and Italy. There were also re-enactors from countries that didn't take part historically, such as Czech Republic and even the USA and Australia!

In the battle scenes, the Spanish and Allied forces (e.g. Italian and German mercenaries) are on the left, while the Dutch and Allied forces (e.g. Scottish, English, French and German mercenaries) are coming from the right. At the end of the battle the victorious Dutch forces shout out Oranje Boven! or Orange above!, referring to the ascendancy of the House of Orange and to the Dutch Republic's tricolor flag at the time, orange-white-blue.

The second part of the video shows some of the scenes in the town, with the various regiments marching around and the villagers living life as it was back then. With wandering geese, a brothel, taverns and all manner of attractions.

I've been to many historical reenactments but this is without doubt one of the best. It's not surprising that people come from as far away as Australia to participate!
