Until the reorganization of 1999 it had been assigned to Suwałki Voivodeship. It had a population of 3,062 inhabitants as of December 31, 2004. Ryn is located between Lake Ryn and Lake Ołów . Among the notable landmarks of the town are a former Ordensburg castle of the Teutonic Knights and a 19th-century Dutch windmill. Biebrza National Park is a national park in Podlaskie Voivodeship, northeastern Poland, situated along the Biebrza River. The largest of Poland’s 23 National Parks, the Biebrza National Park was created on September 9, 1993. Its total area is 592.23 km2 , of which forests cover 155.47 km², fields and meadows covering 181.82 km² and marshes with an area of 254.94 km².

Masuria (Polish: About this sound Mazury (help·info), German: Masuren, Masurian: Mazurÿ) is a region in northern Poland famous for its 2,000 lakes. Before the end of World War II, it was mostly inhabited by Polish-speaking (Masurian dialect) Lutheran Masurians and constituted a part of East Prussia. Masuria occupies much of the Masurian Lake District. Administratively, it belongs to Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. Its biggest city is Ełk, often regarded as its capital. It has territory of about 10,000 km2 and population of 500,000.

The Jewish cemetery in Mikołajki is some distance from the centre and was created outside the boundaries of the town. Today it is found in ul. Dybowska, which is unpaved.

The date of foundation of the cemetery is not known. The oldest gravestone, belonging to Sarah Mormenstein, dates back to 1881, although there could have been stones which were older and which were devasted during the Nazi rule. However despite this devastation this is one of the best-preserved Jewish cemeteries in former East Prussia.

There are 23 complete gravestones and 12 partially preserved gravestones. There are also nine tombs. As can be seen in this video, most are from sandstone. Most stones are written on one side in Hebrew and on the other in German.

I believe that the growth of the railways at the end of the nineteenth century could have seen a growth in the Jewish population of Mikołajki as people came to retire or run businesses from such places as Konigsberg or Gdańśk.

The fate of the Jewish population of Mikołajki is not known. Given that the population were German citizens, even had they survived, they could not have returned after the war.
