Places to see in ( Lourdes - France )
Lourdes is a town in southwestern France, in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains. It’s known for the Sanctuaires Notre-Dame de Lourdes, or the Domain, a major Catholic pilgrimage site. Each year, millions visit the Grotto of Massabielle (Grotto of the Apparitions) where, in 1858, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to a local woman. In the grotto, pilgrims can drink or bathe in water flowing from a spring.
Lourdes is a small market town lying in the foothills of the Pyrenees. It is part of the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region in south-western France. Prior to the mid-19th century, the town was best known for the Château fort de Lourdes, a fortified castle that rises up from a rocky escarpment at its center.
In 1858 Lourdes rose to prominence in France and abroad due to the Marian apparitions claimed to have been seen by the peasant girl Bernadette Soubirous, who was later canonized. Shortly thereafter the city with the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes became one of the world's most important sites of pilgrimage and religious tourism. Today Lourdes hosts around six million visitors every year from all corners of the world. This constant stream of pilgrims and tourists transformed quiet Lourdes into the second most important center of tourism in France, second only to Paris, and the third most important site of international Catholic pilgrimage after Rome and the Holy Land. As of 2011, of French cities only Paris had more hotel capacity.
According to believers, the Virgin Mary appeared to Marie-Bernadette Soubirous on a total of eighteen occasions at Lourdes. Lourdes has become a major place of Roman Catholic pilgrimage and of miraculous healings. The 150th Jubilee of the first apparition took place on 11 February 2008 with an outdoor Mass attended by approximately 45,000 pilgrims.
Lourdes is located in southern France in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains near the prime meridian. It is overlooked from the south by the Pyrenean peaks of Aneto, Montaigu, and Vignemale (3,298 m), while around the town there are three summits reaching up to 1,000 m (3,280.84 ft) which are known as the Béout, the Petit Jer (with its three crosses) and the Grand Jer (with its single cross) which overlook the town. The Grand Jer is accessible via the funicular railway of the Pic du Jer. The Béout was once accessible by cable car, although this has fallen into disrepair. A pavilion is still visible on the summit.
The current municipal area of Lourdes was inhabited in prehistoric times. In Roman times it had to be, since the first century BC, an oppidum hill where today stands the fortress, as it is testified by the numerous finds came to light in the second half of the nineteenth century (remains of walls, fragments of statues and tombstones). At the foot of the citadel stood a pagan temple dedicated to the gods of water, whose buildings have come partially to light soon after the demolition of the parish of Saint Pierre
Yearly from March to October the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes is a place of mass pilgrimage from Europe and other parts of the world. The spring water from the grotto is believed by some to possess healing properties. The five-domed St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Lourdes was designed by Myroslav Nimciv, while its Byzantine interior polychrome decorations were executed by artist Jerzy Nowosielski. The church is about a 10-minute walk from the basilica and the grotto, on a street named in honour of Ukraine, 8 Rue de l'Ukraine, situated on a narrow piece of property close to the railroad station. Visible from the basilica, the height of the building makes up for its breadth.

Chambéry is an Alpine town in southeast France. In the old town is the medieval Castle of the Dukes of Savoy, with historical exhibits. Near Chambéry Cathedral, the 1838 Elephant Fountain honors the 18th-century general Benoît de Boigne. The Musée des Beaux-Arts exhibits include 14th- to 18th-century Italian works. South, the Museum of Charmettes was once home to philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
Chambery is an attractive and lively town in the Savoie department of the Rhone Alps, about 50 kilometres north of Grenoble. The city has a long history linked with that of nearby Italy, and the Dukes of Savoy and Chambery only became a permanent part of France in 1861 - see history of Chambery for details. In recent years Chambery has had something of a revival and has been tidied up and important institutions such as the Musée des Beaux-Arts have re-opened. It is now bright and colourful and a really pleasant place to spent some time.
Start your visit in the wonderful Place Saint-Leger in the heart of the old town, featuring the Fontaine des Marmousets and a 19th century sun-dial and surrounded by tall houses all painted in different colours and lots of outdoor restaurants allowing you to sit down and really savour the atmosphere - and the food. The significant amount of historic heritage in Chambery have led to its being officially listed as a Town of Art and History (Ville d'Art et Histoire') in France. Learn more with a visit to the 'Interpretation Centre' in an imposing 16th century townhouse on Rue Saint Réal.
The historic centre of Chambery dates from the 15th and 16th centuries onwards. One curiosity you will see is the Fountain of the Elephants - built around 1838 in honor of Benoit Leborgne, Earl of Boigne (1751 -1830) on his return from India, after a wandering life in the service of an Indian prince. The fountain is arranged such that the four elephants make a sort of cross which represents the coat of arms of the House of Savoy.
The city has a lot of other squares and streets of interest. From the Place Saint Leger you can explore the many alleys that radiate in all directions, eventually reaching the elegant Rue Croix d'Or where you can admire some ancient aristocratic houses, some of which date back to the 16th century. One of these roads is also named after Boigne and contains many elegant shops.
Chambery castle is an important building (the 'Castle of the Dukes of Savoy') and was sold by its owner (Berlion, Lord of Chambéry) to the Counts of Savoy in 1232. It remained the residence of the Savoy Counts until 1562. The castle is now home to the council offices but you can join a guided visit to see inside. Its chapel, the Sainte Chapelle, used to house the 'Holy Shroud' brought to Europe at the time of the Crusades and entrusted to the Savoy Lords in 1452 (who moved it to Turin in 1578, where it gained the popular name 'the Turin Shroud' - there is a copy of the shroud in the cathedral). Visitors here can also see the 70 famous bells of the so-called 'Great Carillon'.
The gothic style 13th century Cathedral Church of the Franciscan Friars of Saint Francois de Sales has a rather austere facade but is home to the largest collection of trompe-l'oeil paintings in Europe. The highlight in the cathedral is the treasury which includes a 12th century Byzantine diptych among its interesting artefacts, and there is also a copy of the Turin shroud on display in the cathedral.
The City Museum of Fine Arts (the Musée de Beaux-Arts) contains some notable paintings including a beautiful painting representing the 'Adoration of the Magi' by Jean de Bruges and a copy of a remarkable 'San Gerolamo' by Correggio executed by local painter Gian Francesco Berengier in the 18th century. A large part of the museum is dedicated to paintings by Italian Renaissance artists, in particular 'Portrait of a Young Man' by Paolo Uccello and 'Trinity' by Bartolo di Fredi, and many others. The Savoy Museum (Musee Savoisien) is also very interesting and contains numerous artefacts and pictures as well as numerous other collections, such as Roman coins, that explain the long history of Chambery and the Savoy region.

Paris, France - Visite Guidée du Quartier Latin (Partie 1)
Bonjour et bienvenue pour cette nouvelle visite guidée par New York Habitat ( ). Aujourd'hui, nous allons explorer l'un des quartiers les plus animés et populaires de Paris, le Quartier Latin.

Il y a tellement de choses à voir dans ce quartier que cet épisode sera le 1er d'une trilogie consacrée au Quartier Latin. Ne manquez pas les parties 2 ( et 3 ( de notre trilogie consacrée au Quartier Latin.
Situé sur la rive gauche de la Seine, emplacement historique de la citée romaine de Lutèce, le Quartier Latin s'étend de la Seine jusqu'au sommet du Mont St. Geneviève, colline qui doit son nom au saint patron de la ville.
Le nom de Quartier Latin remonte au Moyen-âge, lorsqu'il s'agissait du repère des étudiants et de leurs professeurs. L'université a été créée en tant qu'école rattachée à la Cathédrale. Les cours avaient lieu à l'extérieur, sous les arcades du cloître de la Cathédrale. Au XIIème siècle, beaucoup de personnes ont émigré vers la rive gauche et, peu après, des facultés comme celle de La Sorbonne (fondée en 1257).
Alors, pourquoi l'appelle-t-on le Quartier Latin ? Et bien, cela vient du fait qu'on y parlait le latin, pas seulement au sein des universités et facultés dont les cours étaient dispensés en latin jusqu'au XVII siècle, mais également dans la rue. A l'époque, les étudiants affluaient du monde entier et communiquaient en Latin dans le quartier où ils vivaient et étudiaient.
Aujourd'hui, il y a toujours beaucoup d'étudiant mais aussi des touristes du monde entier qui viennent dans le Quartier Latin pour se balader dans les petites rues, s'installer dans les cafés ou encore aller dans les clubs de jazz.
Saint-Michel
La Fontaine Saint-Michel est un lieu de rendez-vous très apprécié des parisiens. Le boulevard qui la longe est l'un de ceux construits par Haussmann dans les années 1860 et qui faisait partie intégrante du projet de transformation de Paris voulu par Napoléon III. C'est le Boulevard Saint Michel. La fontaine où Saint Michel terrasse un dragon a été dessinée pour finir le boulevard sur une note majestueuse.
Nous voici en route pour goûter au vieux quartier Latin. Ce quartier a conservé ses étroites ruelles médiévales, identifiables grâce au caniveau qui se trouve au centre de celles-ci. Ces rues sont toujours autant animées qu'à l'époque où les étudiants, professeurs médiévaux, artisans, marchands et chevaliers de la garde royale les peuplaient. On y trouve aujourd'hui de nombreux restaurants ethniques pittoresques.

The night scenes of Eiffel tower and the warm atmosphere will make you feel like at home. Paris has a lot of interesting architecture, museums, galleries and shops. A city as Paris is one that everyone should visit and experience.
I invite you to watch my timelapse project video about this beautiful city. In this video journey you will see the main attraction places of Paris from Eifel tower to Gardens of Versailles. The footage for this video was filmed in May 2015, during my vacation.
