The town hall of Calais was built in 1885 on the merging of the cities of Calais and Saint-Pierre, on a barren piece of land at between the two cities. It was designed in the neo-Flemish style of the 15th century, by the architect Louis Debrouwer. Work started in 1911 but was interrupted by the outbreak of war in 1914. Repair of war damage and the completion of the building delayed its inauguration until 1925. It was again damaged in 1940. The belfry 75 metres high, contains one of the most beautiful chimes in the north of France. Rodin's statue the Burghers of Calais stands outside.
One of Calais’ finest landmarks is the Town Hall (1911-25) whose clock towering belfry can be seen for miles around. This magnificent neo-Femish-style structure built of brick and stone was finally completed in 1925 after being interrupted by The Great War. Its purpose was to commemorate the merging of the cities of Calais and Saint Pierre in 1885 on a piece of barren land between the two towns. Today it dominates the main square and can be visited by tourists. It houses paintings and is adorned with stained-glas windows telling the story of the departing English.
The windows also act to diffuse the sunlight around the grand staircase. The interior is renowned for the elaborate décor of the reception rooms. Attached to the town hall is an ornate brick clock tower and belfry that stands 74m/246ft high. The chimes of the bells are most appealing.

Dunkirk is a coastal city in northern France. The Dunkirk 1940 Museum documents Operation Dynamo, the WWII evacuation of Allied soldiers from the city's beaches. The waterside Musée Portuaire (Port Museum) has historic ships, including the Duchesse Anne, a 3-masted sailing ship built in 1901. The striking LAAC is a contemporary art museum with a sculpture garden. Resorts line the soft sands of Malo-les-Bains beach.
Third port in France and hometown of the famous privateer Jean Bart, Dunkerque boasts a rich maritime history. The port museum, situated in a former tobacco warehouse, presents the history of the port of Dunkirk. Three boats can also be visited: the three-master Duchesse Anne, the barge Guilde and the lightship Sandettie. After visiting the museum and strolling along the quays of the Bassin du Commerce, a boat trip is a good way of exploring the port and its different installations.
Besides this port heritage, Dunkirk has two belfries that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites: on Saint-Éloi church and the town hall. The Fine Art Museum houses painting collections of the Flemish, French, Dutch and Italian schools. As well as these many places of interest, relaxing is also on the agenda – on the beautiful fine sand beach of Malo-les-Bains, nicknamed the queen of the northern beaches. Every January and February, the famous Dunkirk carnival livens up and brings colour to the streets of the city.

Visits of the port by boat, dinners-cruises will allow you to discover the port in the heart of its activity. The beach is full of water activities such as kite-surfing, sand yachting, windsurfing and catamaran sailing.
The Dunkirk evacuation, code-named Operation Dynamo, and also known as the Miracle of Dunkirk, was the evacuation of Allied soldiers during World War II from the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk, in the north of France, between 26 May and 4 June 1940.

Troyes is a town in the Grand Est region of northeastern France. Its medieval old town features narrow, cobbled streets lined with colorful, half-timbered houses, mostly dating from the 16th century. The town is home to several Gothic churches with striking stained-glass windows. These include the Troyes Cathedral, the Église Sainte-Madeleine and the Basilique Saint-Urbain.
Troyes has a lively centre that’s graced with one of France’s finest ensembles of half-timbered houses and Gothic churches. Often overlooked, it’s one of the best places in France to get a sense of what Europe looked like back when Molière was penning his finest plays and the Three Musketeers were swashbuckling. Several unique and very worthwhile museums are another lure. Troyes does not have any Champagne cellars. However, you can shop in its scores of outlet stores stuffed with brand-name clothing and accessories, a legacy of the city’s long-time role as France’s knitwear capital.
The downtown area is easily walkable however to go to the outlet malls requires a car. From one side of the downtown to the other is probably a 30 min walk. Troyes is located between to Paris, Reimes, Dijon, and Nancy making it an ideal base to explore the Champagne region. There are some lakes a short drive to the east of the city. The local football (soccer) team, ESTAC, is currently (2013 to 2014 season) in the second French division. Get tickets in the supporters section if possible as it is the cheapest and most exciting. It is very safe. Troyes has some of the best examples of preserved medieval houses in all of Europe, attracting many tourists. There are many old Churches throughout the city and wandering down the stone cobbled streets can make you feel like you are back in time. Besides this Troyes has some nice parks and squares. The Seine river runs through the city, dividing the downtown area roughly in two, and in nice weather you can sit beside it and sip some coffee.
Troyes offers a multimedia library, ice skating, a movie theatre, lazer tag, bowling, pools, and 4 museums. Musée d'Art moderne, Musée Saint-Loup, Musée de Vauluisant, and Musée de l'Apothicairerie. Saint-Loup is the best but they are all worth a look depending on your taste.
Lac d'Auzon-Temple and the Lac d'Orient are two man made lakes to the east of Troyes which are used to control the water levels of other rivers, they are very nice in good weather. As noted above Paris (west), Nancy (east), Dijon (south), or Reimes (north) can be reached for a day trip by car or train. The outlet malls mentioned above also have some good deals.
Troyes has been in existence since the Roman era, as Augustobona Tricassium, which stood at the hub of numerous highways, primarily the Via Agrippa which led north to Reims and south to Langres and eventually to Milan; other Roman routes from Troyes led to Poitiers, Autun and Orléans.

The Hôtel de Ville, Place Alexandre Israël, is an urbane example of the style Louis XIII. On the central corps de logis which contains the main reception rooms, its cornice is rhythmically broken forward over paired Corinthian columns which are supported below by strong clustered pilasters. Above the entrance door the statue of Louis XIV was pulled out of its niche and smashed in 1793, during the Reign of Terror at the height of the French Revolution; it was replaced in the nineteenth century with the present Helmeted Minerva and the device in its original form, now rare to see Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité, ou la Mort

Celebrity Eclipse Cruise Day 3 Le Havre/Normandy Beaches 1/09/18
Today we docked in the French port of Le Havre and embarked on a major trip to visit the Normandy Beaches and the World War 2 Invasion sites. After a hiccup at the port our group of 8 got going and had an amazing time.
First stop was at Omaha Beach, followed by the Omaha Museum. Next we went to the American Cemetery which we all found very moving and impressive. Next we had a short stop to see 4 German Bunkers before coming to Arromaches Beach where the British forces landed. Other stops after this included Bayeux to see the famous Tapestry and the Cathedral, and also the beautiful village of Honfleur.
This was a very busy day but we got to see so much thanks to our stand in driver! Enjoy.
