Let's Go To Italy (Part 9)
Preston and Erica visited Florence on the previous day before the five of us toured the central city area on our final full day while staying in the Tuscany region. Our tour included the famed Academy Of Fine Arts/Accademia Gallery which covered a wide range of Italian paintings, sculptures and a beautiful collection of antique musical instruments. The statue of David, by Michelangelo, garners a majority of the attention. Museum guards would wander amongst the crowd as they gazed upon the famous statue trying to thwart anyone from pointing their cameras towards it. I managed to get a few non-shaky shots. For the rest of the display you will just have to travel to Florence and see it all for yourself.
We experienced two really heavy rain outbursts which you see in the video. In between them we got in line to climb the 463 steps required to reach the top of the duomo which crowns the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral. It is the world's largest free-standing dome. In the middle of the climb we were awed by an interior view of the dome which is covered with the fresco, The Final Judgement. After arriving at the top on the outside we were further amazed with a breathtaking view of Florence. In the distance we could see another oncoming storm ready to hit us.
This was our second to last day in Italy for Michele, Preston, Erica, Abigail, Tyler and myself. The following day we drove to Rome, returned our cars and spent the night while preparing for an early flight home to Portland. Melanie, Craig, Kayla and Jolie stayed another week at Villa Valentini.
