Historic Twin Sister RR Lift Bridges - Fairview and Snowden in Montana, MT
Cross the Yellowstone River on the abandoned Fairview Lift Bridge near Fairview, MT. and the Missouri River on its twin sister bridge, the Snowden Lift Bridge near Nohly, MT.
The Fairview Lift Bridge is as enormous as it is historic. It stretches 1,320 feet across the Yellowstone River and hangs about 100 feet above the water. Constructed in 1913, it was designed so that its lift bridge could be raised to allow steamboat traffic on the river. The mechanism was so delicately balanced that only a one-horsepower motor was required to lift it.
Since the bridge was abandoned by the railroad in 1992, a group of Montana and North Dakota fans has been trying to find a way to ensure the bridge's continued existence. The majestic structure towers above the river about 3.5 miles east of Fairview, Mt. and two miles west of Cartwright, N.D. Commercial traffic on the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers in the two states had ceased years earlier. Consequently, the lift bridge never had to be raised to allow passage for a barge or boat. The huge bridge span necessitated by federal law was used only once, when it was tested after construction was completed in 1914.
The bridge and its twin over the Missouri River at Snowden, Mt., were built along the route of the never completed Montana Eastern Railway. The railway had been designed as a second mainline of the Great Northern Railroad connecting New Rockford, N.D., and Lewistown, Mt. The bridges, at $500,000 each, were the most expensive components of the Montana Eastern Railway plan. When construction on the bridges got under way in 1913, the costly lift bridge required for navigable waters was already obsolete. Plans for the Eastern Montana Railway were abandoned after World War I when the economics of the situation no longer looked so promising.
The Fairview Bridge found itself on a little used branch line. A new use for the bridge came in 1926 when it became part of Highway 23. Planking was placed on the bridge to allow automobiles to share it with train traffic until 1955, when the state built a highway bridge. Since the bridge was used for both cars and trains, there needed to be some means to keep them separated. If a train was coming, an alarm would sound and the lever man would lower cross arms to keep car traffic off the bridge. Great Northern charged a toll for cars using the bridge until 1937 when the state highway department assumed responsibility. Automobiles stopped using the bridge in 1955.
After all these years, the powerful lifting machinery is still in place atop the 108 foot high steel towers. In 1991, the state undertook a survey of historic bridges; the Fairview Bridge was on the list of 127 found eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. In 1999, it was among 30 chosen to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Just beyond the bridge the railroad passes through a 1,458 foot long Cartwright Tunnel. Built in 1912 and 1913, this tunnel is the only one in N.D. Most of the digging was done by hand, although horse and mule drawn scrapers and blasting powder were used in building the approaches. It is curved in the center and looks black as pitch from either end. At its peak, this spur of the Great Northern Railway probably saw no more than one passenger and freight train coming and going each day. Passenger service ended in the late 1950's, and freight traffic ceased in 1986.
