Sommelsdijk is a village on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee, South Holland, the Netherlands, and part of the municipality of the same name. Sommelsdijk has 7,383 inhabitants which makes it the largest settlement on the island. In the past, Sommelsdijk was the only place on the island of Goeree-Overflakee that was part of the province of Zeeland. In 1805 it was made a part of Holland, and remained such under the amendment of the Dutch Constitution of 1814. Early March 1941 during the Second World War, nearly two hundred young men from Sommelsdijk were incarcerated for one month because of insulting the German army and the Dutch police. The Streekmuseum Goeree-Overflakkee is established in seven small houses dating back to the seventeenth century, in the old village of Sommelsdijk in the Netherlands. The buildings are inter-connected. The museum is subdivided into nineteen sections and there is an annually changing exhibition. All aspects of life and work on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee are shown in a well-ordered way. The museum collection dates back to the first century A.D. The visitor will find a complete dwelling, grocery shop and school classroom A.D. 1900. The sections fishery and agriculture give an impression of the principal means of living in the past. The Zeeuws Museum is a museum in Middelburg about the province of Zeeland - Walcheren. Since 1972, the Zeeuws Museum is located at the Abbey Square in the Abbey of Middelburg.
The States of Zeeland made a total of six tapestries from 1593 to 1604 with the sea battles depicted during the eightie year war around Zeeland. The images are designed by Hendrick Vroom. They were exposed in the Abbey of Middelburg, where the States had there meetings and today the museum is located.
