Cassino is a comune in the province of Frosinone, Italy, at the southern end of the region of Lazio, the last City of the Latin Valley. Cassino is located at the foot of Monte Cairo near the confluence of the Gari and Liri rivers. The city is best known as the site of the Abbey of Montecassino and the Battle of Monte Cassino during World War II, which resulted in huge Allied and German casualties as well as the near total destruction of the town itself. It is also home to the University of Cassino. Cassino has a population of 35,860 As of August 2015, making it the second largest town in the province.
Cassino's origins lie in the Volscan settlement of Casinum, sited atop the hill of Cassino near Monte Cairo, five kilometres to the north. Casinum passed under the control of the Samnites, but the Romans eventually gained control of Casinum, establishing a fortified colony there in 312 BC. During the Roman era the most venerated god was Apollo, whose temple rose up on Monte Cassino, where today stands the abbey. At least once during Punic Wars, Hannibal passed near Casinum. Casinum was also the site of a villa presumed to belong to Marcus Terentius Varro.
Cassino is located at the southern end of the region of Lazio and at the northern end of the historical region called Terra di Lavoro. The city centre is set in a valley at the foot of Monte Cassino and Monte Cairo. Cassino is distant 123 km (76 mi) from Rome, 101 km (63 mi) from Naples, 28 km (17 mi) from the coast (Gulf of Gaeta) and 24 km (15 mi) from the Parco nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise. The town is crossed by the rivers Gari and Rapido that join themselves in the area of the Varronian Thermal Baths; forward, in the frazione of Sant'Angelo in Theodice, the Gari joins the Liri, becoming Garigliano, the river that marks the border between the regions Lazio and Campania.

Rieti is a city and comune in Lazio, central Italy, with a population of 47,700. It is the capital of province of Rieti and see of the diocese of Rieti, as well as the modern capital of the Sabina region. The town centre stands on a small hilltop, commanding from the southern edge the wide Rieti valley, at the bottom of Sabine mountains and of monti Reatini, including mount Terminillo. The plain was once a large lake, drained by the ancient Romans, and is now the fertile basin of the Velino River. Only the small Ripasottile and Lungo lakes remain of the larger original.
Reate was originally a major site of the Sabine nation well before the foundation of Rome. According to the legend, when Romulus founded Rome, Romans kidnapped Sabine women in order to populate the town (The Rape of the Sabine Women) and this led to a war between Romans and Sabines. The battle of the Lacus Curtius came to an end only when the women threw themselves between the armies, begging the men who were by then their relatives to stop fighting. Romulus and Titus Tatius relented and a collaboration between the two people started. According to an account more based on history, Sabines settled on the Quirinale because of their continuous need for grazing-lands.
The ancient Sabine and Roman city was crowded with buildings, including baths (thermae). Only scarce remains were found during excavations in 19th and 20th century: the foundations of a large temple, the stone floor of the main square (forum), walls from private houses, concrete vaults, statues and pottery items. The most striking remains are the stone bridge across the Velino river and the viaduct. Piazza San Rufo is traditionally considered to be the exact centre of Italy (Latin Umbilicus Italiae).
Other sights include:
Rieti Cathedral: Construction started in 1109 over a pre-existing basilica, was consecrated in 1225 and almost entirely rebuilt in 1639. It has a stunning Romanesque bell tower from 1252. The entrance portico leads to a 13th-century portal. The interior, on Latin cross plan with one nave and two aisles, has mainly Baroque decorations, including a St. Barbara sculpted by Giannantonio Mari (1657), probably designed by Bernini. Antoniazzo Romano contributed a fresco. It also houses canvases from 16th and 17th centuries. The crypt corresponds to the most ancient part of the church, consecrated in 1157. The Baptistery has an elegant 15th-century baptismal font.
Palazzo Vescovile (Bishops Palace or Papal Palace): Construction begun in 1283. Noteworthy are the loggia and eight Renaissance-style windows from 1532. The lower floor is occupied by the so-called Volte del Vescovado, a great portico with two naves of Gothic arcades. The Grand Hall houses the Diocese Gallery.

San Francesco: church begun in 1245, radically restored in 1636). The interior has a single nave. The original frescoes from the 14th-15th centuries depicting scenes from the life of St. Francis and the Virgin and Child[2] are now in the Diocese Museum and in the Palazzo Vescovile.
Teatro Flavio Vespasiano is the city's theater and opera house, built in the late 19th century.

Benevento is a beautiful city set in a verdant environment and surrounded by the Campanian Apennines, between the rivers Sabato and Calore. According to some sources, the city was founded by the Greek Diomedes after the destruction of Troy. The first documented sources date from the fifth century BC, the period of the Samnite wars. The Samnite populations resisted for a long time against the Roman incursions, nonetheless they finally surrendered in 268 BC when the Romans founded their colonies.
However, the Romans recognized the magnitude of the inhabitants of that Maleventum that, renamed Beneventum was also gloriously represented onto a number of important Roman monuments as the Arch of Trajan and the Bridge Leproso. During the Middle Ages, Benevento was first conquered by the Goths and then by the Byzantines. In 571 it was the turn of the Lombards who, led by Zottone, conquered the city once again.
The Lombard domination lasted for about five centuries, and in 1077 the city came under papal rule. The 1266 was the year of the battle between Manfred and Charles of Anjou which undertakes to return Benevento to the Church. In 1688 a violent earthquake destroyed half city, that was gradually brought back to the ancient splendour at the behest of Pope Benedict XIII. During the 16th century the city passed under the rule of Frederick IV of Bourbon, and later included into the Neapolitan Republic. In 1806, the city's ruled by Napoleon, but in 1860 it was finally annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
A curiosity: Benevento is also known as the city of the witches since when the Lombards arrived in town and introduced some customs, such as dancing around walnut trees, which frightened the Christians of Benevento. Benevento's patron is St Bartholomew, which is celebrated on August 24. Benevento is a town rich in artistic and historical attractions. In the old town center you can visit the splendid Cathedral, built around the twelfth century, and unfortunately bombed in 1943. The façade is open by blind arches and balcony above, where there are Roman fragments, Lombard graves and various sculptures. Remarkable is the bell tower that dates back to 1279, while the interior comes with five aisles.
Do not miss a visit to the ruins of the Roman Theatre, commissioned by the Emperor Hadrian, now still well preserved and used for various theatrical performances. L 'Arc of Trajan was erected to celebrate the extension of the Via Appia from Benevento to Brindisi. On the side facing the city are recounted scenes of good governance and works of peace. On the external front, there depictions of military scenes about the imperial policies in the provinces.
Do not miss the Church of St Sofia, once ancient Benedictine abbey founded by the Lombards, which has a solid structure and a 12th-century portal. Rocca dei Rettori's worth a visit: erected in 1321 at the behest of Pope Giovanni XXII. It's divided into three large floors that house the Museo del Sannio. To complete the visit of Benevento Leproso recommend a walk to the bridges Leproso and Valentino located just outside the city. Also do not miss the Villa dei Papi, mansions built between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries and the baroque Church of San Bartolomeo.

Exploring Rocca d'Arce. Earlier this year I filmed several videos in my places in Italy, but then between traveling and work I didn't have a chance to process them until now. I'm hoping to release them in internet gradually during these winter months. This is the first one, of a town called Rocca d'Arce (or Roccadarce) where I ended up unintentionally, getting lost on the way to another destination.
