Annecy is the largest city of Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in southeastern France.
It lies on the northern tip of Lake Annecy, 35 kilometers south of Geneva.
Nicknamed the Pearl of French Alps in Raoul Blanchard's monograph describing its location between lake and mountains, the city controls the northern entrance to the lake gorge.
Due to the lack of available land, its resident population has remained stagnant, with 52,029 inhabitants living within the city limits in 2013.
However, its urban area, with 221,000 inhabitants, is on the 5th regional position, just behind the Geneva-Annemasse urban area, which counts 292,000 inhabitants in the northern department.
Switching from counts of Geneva’s dwelling in the 13th century, to counts of Savoy’s in the 14th century, the city became the capital of the Savoy province in 1434 during the prerogative of Genevois-Nemours until 1659.
Its role increased in 1536, during the Calvinist Reformation of Geneva, while the bishop took refuge in Annecy.
St Francis de Sales gave Annecy its role of advanced citadel of the Catholic Counter-Reformation.
The annexation of Savoy will link the city to France in 1860.
Sometimes called Venice of the Alps, this idyllic and touristic representation comes from its two canals and the Thiou river lying through the old city and whose initial role was to protect the city and to empower its handicrafts.
The city experienced an industrial development in the 19th century with silk manufacturing.
Some of its industrial legacy remains today within the head offices of NTN-SNR bearings, Salomon, Entremont and Dassault Aviation.
Since the end of the 19th century, Annecy has developed as a tourist center with the proximity of the lake, winter resorts and the renovation of its castle, inaugurated with the opening of its fine art museum in 1956.
The municipal environmental policy managed to keep 40.3% of green spaces and the city and was awarded the Golden Flower in 2015, given to the nine most-flowered French cities.
Since 1960 Annecy has been the organiser of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, hosted at the Bonlieu Cultural Centre.
It has also been a growing educational center since the establishment of the University of Savoy in 1973.

Lovers Bridge
The Lovers Bridge, often visited by tourists and used for wedding photographs, is a crucial transit way to explore Annecy. Surrounded by hundreds of trees, the bridge in front of the damp boats on the banks of the Vassé Canal has become the symbol of Annecy.
This pedestrian bridge, which passes through the Vassé Canal and connects the jardins de l'Europe to the Pâquier square, allows passers to reach the Jacquet promenade and Jules Philippe's pier without getting their feet wet and long turns. You can enjoy a 180-degree view of the lake along the bridge and a view of Swan Island, very close to the bridge.
This bridge is usually the place where lovers meet, so it is named Lovers Bridge.
From 1845, the first wooden pedestrian bridge was erected in the name of the visit of King Charles-Albert of Savoie. Later, in 1859, the pedestrian bridge of the public garden was built very firmly by Claude Grandchamp. Absolutely any time. Nice is France's fifth city. It's on the move 12 months a year. It doesn't like seaside resorts, shut or stop in synchronisation with seasonal visitors, which is why there are visitors all year round. In winter, the light will be limpid, the weather maybe warm enough to eat lunch outdoors - and the nights warmed by Europe's greatest carnival, starting in February. Spring brings added perkiness to the fruit and flowers of the great Saleya market and bright warmth to life in general, while summer - the wiseacres will tell you - is hot and packed. And so what? There's something very appealing about being in a city when it's at full tilt - with festivals, crowds and life lived late on scores of bar terraces. September and October are more mellow, but only mildly so. While the temperature might better suit British people, the sea may still be warm enough for bathing, and Nice will remain Mediterranean. Its mellow might strike other people as rather exuberant.
The key sight - it's unmissable as you wing into Nice airport - is the glorious curve of the Bay of Angels, miles of the loveliest urban sea-front in Europe, fringed by the celebrated Promenade des Anglais. You could spend an entire trip just wandering along here. But you'll also need to see Nice old town, where the real Niçois re-colonise their city, hosting the south's finest flower market on the Cours Saleya. Consider buying the French Riviera Pass. This gets you access to city museums, the open-topped bus tour, coastal cruising and plenty of other sites along the Côte d’Azur in Antibes and Monaco. There are also discounts in certain shops and free glasses of champagne in some casinos.

Driving the D909 to Talloires | Lake Annecy
During my trip to France I spent two nights in Talloires on the beautiful Lake Annecy.
There are a number of scenic drives and beautiful roads in the region.
We spent a lot of our time at the beach but I mounted the GoPro to the car a few times to capture what the driving was like.
This is just a quick shot of the trip back to Talloires. I'm not sure of any of the names of the small towns we drove through but there are a few different places that you could stop to explore.
Though it might seem busy it was pretty easy driving in this part of France. Traffic along the lake doesn't move too quickly and people are forgiving of tourists, especially during the summer.

A WEEK IN PROVENCE & Lake Annecy
This is from a trip to the region of Provence in Southern France, with a snippet of Lake Annecy. The natural light was incredible and the scenery, like something out of a movie - couldn't help but add the wonderful theme from Out of Africa by John Barry. One stunning village after another, the roads were un-littered and perfectly smooth and the villages were full of colour and spotlessly clean. Lake Annecy was in a league of its own - crystal clear water with a white sandy base. To be in it was like swimming in Evian. One of the best features of all is that there was not an England football shirt in sight - Paradise!! For you tech buffs this video was filmed almost exclusively on an iphone 5 with few shots taken with a Panasonic GH3 - a Every shot was hand-held so I make no apologies for any imperfections.
