Bordeaux, with 247,000 acres, is a wine-producing area three times the size of Burgundy. Bordeaux is the largest fine wine-making region in the world, as well as the most legendary. More than half the fine wines of the world come from France and about half of these are from Bordeaux.
Although the reputation is built mostly on red wines, especially those from the Médoc, St-Èmilion and Pomerol districts, the region produces the entire gamut of wines, including dry and sweet whites, and rosés.
What is hotel barging?
Despite the growing popularity of cruising, especially on large river vessels, hotel barging is still a little known niche concept. Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers.
This is cruising, but in a very different style to ships plying the big rivers or oceans. The pace is slow, with a 6 day cruise covering maybe just 50 miles along a rural canal. Passengers can walk or bike the towpaths as their floating hotel glides gently along. Guests enjoy an intimate atmosphere, high levels of personal service and immersion into the culture, history and gastronomy of regions of Europe such as Burgundy, the Midi, or the Italian Veneto.

The old basin is a port located in the center of the city of Honfleur in the French department of Calvados in the Normandy region . Its narrow slate houses reflecting in the basin make it the main tourist attraction of Honfleur. This watershed was created at the instance of Abraham Duquesne and by order of Colbert in 1681. It replaces the old haven of beaching which was much narrower. These works require the destruction of the western part of the ramparts. They end in 1684.
This basin, approximately 1 hectare ( 10,000 m 2 ) wide, is 130 m long, 70 m wide on the south side and 85 m wide on the north side where the channel to the outer harbor is located. of Honfleur . It is entirely surrounded by publicly accessible wharves. The old basin is surrounded by Quai Sainte-Catherine to the west and for part of the south side. The houses of this dock numbered 2 to 68 are listed under the historical monuments since 1933. The forty houses date from the xvii th and xviii th centuries. They are narrow and have three to seven floors (except home n o 2, which has only one floor). Many facades are covered with slates. Some homes are built with corbels .
This uninterrupted series of old houses and their reflection in the water of the pool further accentuate the beauty of this place prized by many painters and photographers. The old basin has always been represented by artists including Gustave Courbet , Eugène Boudin , Claude Monet and Johan Barthold Jongkind , forming the School of Honfleur which contributed to the appearance of the Impressionist movement . Today, most of the ground floor of Quai Sainte-Catherine are occupied by restaurants and breweries. The Neurdein brothers photographed the Saint-Catherine wharf in Honfleur.
The south side extends the Quai Sainte-Catherine by Montpensier Street. By an underground route, the stream of Claire feeds the basin. The eastern part of the basin is occupied by only a dozen buildings constituting the Saint-Étienne wharf. Among these are the town hall (protected as historical monuments since 1989), the Saint - Etienne church (protected as historical monuments since 1932) became a museum of the Navy. Three alleys access to the Saint-Étienne wharf. On the north side or the sea side, there is the Quai de la Quarantaine and a single building: the lieutenancy that was once the home of the king's lieutenant. It is the only important vestige of the fortifications of the city. The movable bridge on the channel towards the front-port formed by Morelle completes the round of the basin.
