Villaputzu, Bidda de Putzi or Biddeputzi in Sardinian language is a municipality in the Province of South Sardinia in the Italian region and island of Sardinia, located about 45 kilometres northeast of the Sardinian capital Cagliari. Its ancient roads and stone houses match the shape of the mouth of the Flumendosa river. Villaputzu, a village with five thousand inhabitants, lies a short distance from the southeastern coast of the Island, along which there are stretches of sand and promontories with inlets.
Four kilometres from the village, you will find the marvellous Porto Corallo and its modern tourist port, dominated by a tower, which is one of six making up the Aragonese defence system (16th century). Nearby, there is the captivating Porto Tramatzu: fine sand set in Mediterranean greenery. Further north, there is the beach of Quirra (or Murtas), which is only partly accessible due to military restrictions. Next to the coastline, alluvial plains with ponds open up and are the habitat of the western swamphen, the mallard and the greater flamingo. This unspoilt scenery combines sun and sea with birdwatching, biking and trekking. As you explore further, you will encounter dense woods: you can walk amidst the ruins of industrial archaeology, like the mine of Baccu Locci, and grottoes with intricate underground passages, stalactites and stalagmites.
Villaputzu's origins can be identified with Phoenician-Punic towns and the river port of Sarrapos (hence the name Sarrabus), dating back to the 7th century BC. It later became a Roman village, as is documented in the Itinerarium Antonini. The current village gravitates around the parish church of Santa Caterina of Alexandria. The Late Gothic church of San Giorgio Martire is also worth visiting. It was rebuilt in the 16th century on a previous 12th century structure. Among the rural churches, that of San Nicola stands out. It is a very rare example of a Sardinian Romanesque red brick building.
The little church stands at the foot of the mountain of Castello di Quirra (13th century), places in which historical tales are told of sieges, along with legends about the Carroz family. The mountain has seven caves on different levels, where artefacts from the Palaeolithic era and from Roman and Medieval settlements have been found. There are infinite traces of prehistoric times in the territory: Domus de Janas necropolis of Torre Murtas and of S'Oru, underground interment of Casa Forrus, Pseudo-Nuraghi, single-tower and complex Nuraghi, Tombs of Giants and the sacred well of Is Pirois, built on the top of the Nuraghe.
The Fires of Sant'Antonio Abate, the carnival and the festivity of San Giorgio (in May) animate the village and the festival of the launeddas, in August, is the event par excellence: players from all over the island perform here. A similar concert, Canti di Canne, is staged on 26 December at San Giorgio. The musical instrument, consisting of three pipes played using the 'circular breathing' technique, has primordial native origins.
Villaputzu boasts centuries of use of this instrument: skilled masters hand down this priceless heritage to young players. On the subject of traditions, you can admire fabrics, wicker baskets, wooden and ceramic objects in the summer, during the Sarrabus handicrafts exhibition. Citrus fruits stand out among the agricultural products. The exquisite cuisine is the result of ancient customs: culurgionis and malloreddus, char-grilled meat and fish and pastries like pardulas and pabassinas.

Ulassai, Ulassa in sardinian language, is a comune in the Province of Nuoro in the Italian region Sardinia, located about 70 kilometres northeast of Cagliari and about 20 kilometres southwest of Tortolì. Ulassai borders the following municipalities: Esterzili, Gairo, Jerzu, Osini, Perdasdefogu, Seui, Tertenia, Ussassai, Villaputzu.
Ulassai is a small mountain town in the heart of Ogliastra, Sardinia’s most unspoiled and authentic region. Surrounded by high limestone cliffs and at an altitude of 700 m amsl, it attracts visitors for the combination of inland Sardinia’s uncontaminated nature and authentic traditions with the beauty of the coastline, only 20 minutes away by car.
Ulassai offers, in just a few km from the village centre, a wide variety of attractions: from the distinctive limestone “tacchi”, so-called because they resemble upturned shoe heels (“tacco” means “heel” in Italian), very popular with climbers from al lover the world, to the “Su Marmuri” cavern, one of Sardinia’s most famous; from the high, foaming Lecorci and Lequarci waterfalls, which form after the autumn rains, to the Taccu plateau with its woods of centuries-old oaks and strawberry trees, through which various paths weave to offer walks with breathtaking views. In the town centre of Ulassai you can still find, almost intact, the typical architecture of the ancient Sard villages. You can admire traditional arches ( the Arco di “Barigau”, the actual entrance gate to the heart of the town and a majestic monument, what’s left ofan old town wall), cloisters and other buildings from the past which exude, still today, the odour of our forebear’s times.
Memories of ancient crafts live on among the people of Ulassai, the best example of which are the fine works of the women of the Cooperativa tessile di Su Marmuri (weaving cooperative) who, as in the past, skilfully weave their wools to create unique woven designs of important artistic and handicraft value. For a few years now, in Ulassai a process of developing this extraordinary natural heritage made of rocks, waterfalls and woods has been underway. This heritage, which for thousands of years was regarded by the Ulassai community as “merely where they worked”, is now an important resource for tourism.
Hundreds of rock climbing routes have been created along with walking paths for nature lovers, so that, over the course of about 10 years, Ulassai has become an important centre in Sardinia for outdoor sport lovers. Today Ulassai boasts some of Sardinia and Europe’s finest climbing. This, together with the works of art scattered across the area. the hiking trails, the caves and the handicrafts, make Ulassai a “must-visit” for all those who love art and nature.

Dire spiaggia è riduttivo!!
Torre Spagnola di Porto Corallo a Villaputzu ~ 16 Luglio 2017 | Viaggiare in Sardegna
La torre di Porto Corallo si trova davanti al porto turistico di Porto Corallo, comune di Villaputzu.
Venne costruita dalla Reale Amministrazione delle Torri nell'ultimo decennio del XVI secolo, con lo scopo di controllare gli accessi alla foce del Flumendosa e difendere la comunità di corallari della zona.
Quest'area era già frequentata in epoca punica come approdo della città di Sarcapos/Sarrabos ed era difesa già in epoca medievale dallo scomparso castello di Malvicino o Sarrabos.
Il forte attuale a 15 metri s.l.d.m. era in contatto visivo con la torre di Monte Rosso a nord e con quella delle Saline e di Capo Ferrato a sud.
La forma della torre é cilindrica, leggermente più stretta verso la cima; la sua altezza dal basamento è di 14 m.
L'ingresso al primo piano è aperto a 6,5 metri da terra; la camera interna é circolare, ha un diametro di 6 metri e una volta cupolata e tre feritoie. Questo ambiente viene chiamato casamatta in quanto la camera interna é a prova di bomba.
'E presente un caminetto e una botola per scendere nella cisterna sottostante. Alla destra dell'ingresso, una scala interna alla muratura conduce al piano superiore.
Il secondo piano era originariamente aperto e veniva chiamato piazza d'armi. Era costituito nel lato terra da una struttura leggera semicircolare fatta di canne e coppi che si appoggiava nel parapetto; il suo scopo era proteggere munizioni e uomini dalla notte; nel lato mare invece, la muratura era merlata per l'alloggiamento dei cannoni.
Attivamente utilizzata fin dal 1600, fù restaurata e potenziata fra il 1777 e il 1778; la struttura superiore venne demolita e ricostruita fino al livello del boccaporto; altri interventi vennero realizzati nel 1791 e nel 1798.
Nel 1767 nella torre è indicata una guarnigione composta da un alcaide, due soldati e un armamento costituito da due sole spingarde ( cannoni leggeri ).
Nel 1812 l'edificio subì l'attacco di una flotta di barbareschi della Tunisia, respinto grazie all'intervento di genti di Villaputzu e Muravera.
Attorno al 1830 la torre venne riparata su progetto dell'architetto Melis.
Dopo il 1842, data della soppressione della Reale Amministrazione delle Torri, l'edificio fù adibita ad altri scopi.
Nel secolo XIX il piano superiore venne chiuso, venne innalzato tutto il parapetto e tutte le merlature vennero trasformate in finestre; nello stesso periodo venne costruita la scala in pietra esterna.
L'ultimo restauro della torre risale al 1984. La torre è compresa nelle principali opere sulle fortificazioni costiere in Sardegna.

An ancient city with a long history, Cagliari has seen the rule of several civilisations. Under the buildings of the modern city there is a continuous stratification attesting to human settlement over the course of some five thousand years, from the Neolithic to today. Historical sites include the prehistoric Domus de Janas, very damaged by cave activity, a large Carthaginian era necropolis, a Roman era amphitheatre, a Byzantine basilica, three Pisan-era towers and a strong system of fortification that made the town the core of Spanish Habsburg imperial power in the western Mediterranean Sea. Its natural resources have always been its sheltered harbour, the often powerfully fortified hill of Castel di Castro, the modern Casteddu, the salt from its lagoons, and, from the hinterland, wheat from the Campidano plain and silver and other ores from the Iglesiente mines.
Cagliari was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia from 1324 to 1848, when Turin became the formal capital of the kingdom (which in 1861 became the Kingdom of Italy). Today the city is a regional cultural, educational, political and artistic centre, known for its diverse Art Nouveau architecture and several monuments.[7] It is also Sardinia's economic and industrial hub, having one of the biggest ports in the Mediterranean Sea, an international airport, and the 106th highest income level in Italy (among 8,092 comuni), comparable to that of several northern Italian cities.[8]

Acque di Arredelusu al Flumendosa di Seulo ~ 11 Agosto 2018 | Viaggiare in Sardegna
Esploriamo le incantevoli piscine naturali di Arredelusu, località fluviale sul Flumendosa situata tra Seulo e Gadoni.
Raggiunta nella spiaggetta ciottolosa, percorriamo uno degli ordinati vialetti creati dai frequentatori della zona per raggiungere la riva.
Il paesaggio che ci accoglie é incantevole, emozionante e surreale, da lasciarci senza fiato!
L'attenzione viene catturata dalla stretta gola rocciosa a V scavata dallo scorrere del Flumendosa, incastonata tra verdi pendii.
La montagna sullo sfondo e le bianche pareti rocciose si riflettono nel laghetto dalle acque calme, verdi e cristalline.
Regna una pace e un silenzio quasi assoluto, interrotto solo dal rumore di un'auto che passa sul ponte nelle vicinanze.
Davanti a noi un invitante laghetto verde, sabbioso, ciottoloso e poco profondo, circondato da canne e arbusti.
Iniziamo la nostra esplorazione del fiume in direzione delle profonde piscine del Flumendosa.
Il primo tratto è profondo appena mezzo metro ed è molto sabbioso e popolato da piccoli pesci.
Qualche decina di metri pub avanti il fondale diventa molto profondo e iniziamo a nuotare nell'oscurità, senza vedere il fondo.
Il Flumendosa nel suo scorrere si accumula in profonde vasche, contenute tra alte pareti rocciose a picco sul fiume.
Risaliamo le acque controcorrente, esplorando con cautela tutte le vasche una dopo l'altra.
Lungo il percorso sono presenti molti punti dove ci si può fermare a prendere fiato, tuffarsi e fare splendide riprese panoramiche.
Nei punti dove il fondale si fa più basso e visibile, osserviamo piccole trote e ghiozzi di fiume, oltre a colorate libellule e altri insetti galleggianti.
Attraversiamo un punto dove le pareti verticali diventano più strette e avvolgenti e la corrente aumenta, fino a raggiungere una piccola cascatella.
Salendo su una grande roccia oltre il piccolo salto, osserviamo l'incantevole paesaggio circostante.
La nostra esplorazione fluviale finisce qui, ma resterà dentro di noi uno splendido ricordo di questo acqua trekking .
Come arrivare:
Percorrendo il ponte panoramico che da Seulo porta a Gadoni, alto ben 110 metri e che unisce i due ripidi pendii, possiamo ammirare dall'alto le piscine della località sottostante chiamata Arredelusu, una delle tante della grande ansa del Flumendosa.
Oltre il ponte, svoltiamo al primo bivio sulla sinistra e percorrendo la vecchia strada sterrata scendiamo verso una vallata sempre verdissima anche in tempo di siccità.
Raggiunti alcuni fertilissimi orti, parcheggiamo l'auto poco oltre il bivio a sinistra col il cartello che ci invita a svoltare per Arredelusu.
Se imboccata, la mulattiera é corta, stretta e ricca di rovi ai lati e attraversa un piccolo guardo, per cui vi consiglio di parcheggiare nella strada principale e percorrere il tratto a piedi, magari con gli zoccoli da mare.
In un paio di minuti raggiungiamo la spiaggetta ciottolosa che ci permette di iniziare l'esplorazione delle incantevoli piscine di Arredelusu.
Un pò di storia:
Ho conosciuto questa località da bambino tra la fine degli anni '80 e i primi anni '90, oltre 25 anni fa, ed era molto diversa da oggi.
La grande vasca è ancora li, ma subito dopo c'erano alcune piscinette profonde mezzo metro intervallate tra loro da dei muretti a mo' di dighe tra una sponda e l'altra, zona ideale per famiglie con bambini.
Enormi alberi al centro della vallata ( dove ora vediamo i vialetti e più a valle ) facevano ombra ai bagnanti accaldati ad Agosto e alle auto in sosta, parcheggiate molto più vicino di dove si può arrivare adesso.
Poi, qualche anno fa, arrivò una piena più violenta delle altre; lessi sui giornali che la protezione civile fece evacuare le sponde del fiume perche dovettero aprire le dighe nella parte alta del Flumendosa, erano troppo piene; quella piena cambio per sempre il volto del fiume.
Spazzo via tutto, piscinette, muretti e alberi lasciando solo una distesa di pietre e ghiaia, riempiendo di detriti alcune piscine profonde e creandone altre in altri punti. Più a valle Is Caddaias, altra incantevole località, subì grossomodo la stessa sorte; la piscina oltre le cascate, molto più profonda in passato, si riempi di detriti e parte alcune delle rocce dove scorre la cascata furono portata via dalla furia delle acque, cambiandone per sempre il suo volto.
Il fiume cambia sempre, di piena in piena, non è mai lo stesso.
