It was established on 1 January 2016 as a result of the merger of the former communes of Vire , Coulonces, Maisoncelles-la-Jourdan, Roullours, Saint-Germain-de-Tallevende-la-Lande-Vaumont, Truttemer-le-Grand, Truttemer-le-Petit and Vaudry.Vire-Normandie is the administrative centre of the arrondissement of Vire.

    The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial is a World War II cemetery and memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy, France, that honors American troops who died in Europe during World War II. In 2007, the American Battle Monuments Commission dedicated a new $30 million, 30,000 sf Visitors Center at the cemetery, relating the global significance and meaning of Operation Overlord.
