Zwolle und Deventer Nederland
Das in der Nähe des IJsselmeeres gelegene Zwolle ist die Hauptstadt der niederländischen Provinz Overijssel. Im Gebiet von Zwolle entsteht das nur 19 km lange Zwarte Water, das dann auch das Wasser der Vechte (Overijsselse Vecht) ins Zwarte Meer leitet. Weiter gibt es einen Kanal zur IJssel, deren Mündung beim Nachbarort Kampen liegt.
An der Stelle, wo Zwolle liegt, wurden Siedlungsreste aus der Jungsteinzeit und der Bronzezeit gefunden. Die Stadt entstand auf einem kleinen Sandrücken (suol, vergleiche Deutsch: geschwollen) zwischen der IJssel und der Vecht. Die Sankt-Michaeliskirche wurde bereits 1040 urkundlich erwähnt.
Die Stadt, einstiges Mitglied der Hanse, erhielt 1230 die Stadtrechte, die 1438 durch das Stapelrecht erweitert wurden. Das 15. Jahrhundert war die größte Blütezeit Zwolles. Die Stadt war damals, wie Deventer, eine Hochburg der Buchdruckerkunst. Auch gab es Unterrichtsanstalten größter Bedeutung. Die Mitglieder der Brüder vom gemeinsamen Leben oder Devotio moderna arbeiteten von Zwolle und Deventer aus in ganz Nordwesteuropa. Zwolle hat in dieser Zeit eng mit den Nachbarstädten Kampen und Deventer zusammen-gearbeitet, sie prägten sogar während einiger Jahrzehnte gemeinsame Münzen.
Nach etwa 1550 trat ein wirtschaftlicher Rückgang ein, obwohl die Stadt immer einen der größten Viehmärkte der Niederlande und mehrere Buchdruckereien behielt. Neuer Aufschwung trat um 1890 ein, als die Stadt an das Eisenbahnnetz angeschlossen wurde.
Die jüdische Gemeinde von Zwolle wurde im Zweiten Weltkrieg durch Deportationen in deutsche Konzentrationslager dezimiert. Auch gab es in der Stadt mehrere Hinrichtungen von Widerstandskämpfern. Einige Kriegsdenkmäler erinnern noch an diese Ereignisse.
Deventer ist eine Gemeinde in der Provinz Overijssel (Niederlande); die Stadt Deventer ist der Hauptort in dieser Provinz.
Die Stadt Deventer, auf deren Grundgebiet schon vor Anfang des 4. Jahrhunderts Germanen lebten, wurde vor dem 8. Jahrhundert gegründet. Der angelsächsische Missionar Lebuin (= Liafwin – „lieber Freund“) gründete dort 768 oder 769 eine Kirche. Der Ort an einer kleinen Anhöhe am Fluss Ijssel war damals schon ein wichtiger Handelsplatz. Als die Wikinger den Ort im Jahr 882 auf ihren Raubzügen in den Rheinlanden zerstörten, wurde Deventer bald wieder aufgebaut und mit Erdwällen befestigt.
Im 9. und 10. Jahrhundert war Deventer vorübergehend Sitz des Utrechter Bischofs. Eine Münze von hier aus dem 11. Jahrhundert findet sich im Münzfund von Sandur auf den Färöern. Die Stadt entwickelte sich zu einem wichtigen Knotenpunkt von Handelswegen und schloss sich der deutschen Hanse an. Vor allem der Handel mit Stockfisch aus Skandinavien war bedeutend. Im 15. Jahrhundert fand in der Stadt fünfmal im Jahr ein Jahrmarkt statt. Als im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert die Seewege über Holland immer wichtiger wurden und der Wasserpegel in der Ijssel sank, so dass große Schiffe den Fluss nicht länger benutzen konnten, verlor die Stadt vorübergehend stark an Bedeutung. Im 18. Jahrhundert wurde eine Eisengießerei gegründet, und zwischen 1850 und 1930 wuchs die Industrie stark, um nach 1970 wieder an Wichtigkeit einzubüßen.
In der Zeit der Zugehörigkeit zum Französischen Staat war Deventer Hauptort des gleichnamigen Arrondissements im Département des Bouches-de-l’Yssel (Departement der IJsselmündungen).
