Walk 39 / Meandering within Alserkal Avenue / Concrete to Concrete (A loop) / Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE)/ 26 January 2019, Saturday
-
I secretly made this video in between breaks when I was a part of a conference at Concrete in Alserkal Avenue. The building is designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. The site is the location of a series of talks and performances by many artists, curators and writers. The name of the conference is Asia Contemporary Art Week. Alserkal Avenue is a cultural district in Dubai inhabited by galleries, and many cool shops and restaurants. As this video is shot on a weekend, you can see hundreds and hundreds of people here. It's packed! I hope you will have a small impression of these spaces. It's quite special in Dubai, especially when everything seems to be within mega-malls.

Alserkal Avenue | Dubai
Established by Alserkal in 2008, Alserkal Avenue is a renowned cultural district of contemporary art galleries, non-profit organisations, and homegrown businesses in the Al Quoz industrial area of Dubai. Spread across 500,000 square feet, Alserkal Avenue is a vibrant community of visual and performing arts organisations, designers, and artisanal spaces that have become an essential platform for the development of the creative industries in the United Arab Emirates. As one of the region's foremost platforms for contemporary art, Alserkal Avenue provides cultural experiences for local, regional, and international audiences.
Alserkal Avenue features Concrete, a multi-disciplinary space conceptualised and programmed by Alserkal. Concrete was inaugurated in 2017 as the first building in the UAE to be completed by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), founded by Rem Koolhaas. An adaptable venue, Concrete's ability to metamorphose to bring creative visions to life makes it suitable for international, museum-grade exhibitions as well as events across art, design, fashion and the performing arts.
Concrete has been shortlisted for the 2019 Aga Khan Award for Architecture, marking the first time a project in Dubai has been shortlisted for this prestigious award. This is also the first time a project by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture has been shortlisted.
Founded by Emirati businessman and patron, Abdelmonem Bin Eisa Alserkal, in 2007, Alserkal is a socially responsible cultural enterprise, which is deeply engaged with the arts locally, regionally, and internationally. Through Alserkal Avenue, Alserkal has cultivated a creative economy in Dubai, supporting cultural production and spearheading disruptive business models, including the OMA-designed Concrete.

Patio cool decking Alserkal residence Oman
Patio by Culzoni was recently installed at Mr. Eisa Bin Nasser Al Serkal’s house in the Oman. Patio pavers in ivory champagne finish were fixed in the swimming pool area of his house allowing him and his guests to enjoy its most distinctive benefit; heat-resistance. Patio absorbs 15 °C temperature less than other surfaces. We are very proud to share this video!

10. SOUNDBITE: (English) Georgina Adam, Art Market correspondent for The Financial Times:
I think that this year's is actually very interesting because it seems to me that it is more adventurous than the previous ones. The previous ones played safe quite and to a certain extent they have to play safe because for cultural reasons in the region there are obviously things that you can't show. It seems to me that this market is becoming more sophisticated here and people are prepared to bring things that are not necessarily easy for somebody to understand.
11. Pull out from exhibit to wide shot - Paris gallery
12. Light installation by Pakistani artist Shezad Dawood 'The Pattern of Plan' (50-thousand US dollars)
13. Tilt down from Iranian painter Ramin Haerizadeh's Bad Hijab (25-thousand US dollars ) to Abdel Kader' Benchanna's 'Le Mauvais Point'

15. SOUNDBITE: (English) Antonia Carver, fair director:
We really see Dubai as becoming something of a cultural hub which is really exciting. Artists are producing, they're very excited about what is happening. It's the fact that there is international recognition and what is happening in the region - with Art Dubai, with all the exhibitions, the museums opening, the institutions, the residency programmes so there is platforms opening all over the area and in Saudi Arabia for these artists to show their work and express themselves.
24. Painting of The Pomegranate Series by Dubai artist Abdul Qader Al Rais (costing 219-thousand US dollars)

La Perle is being described as an aqua-theatre – an immersive experience where audience seating extends just 14 rows back, to keep every guest as close to the action as possible.
There are 2.7 million litres of water used for each performance, which falls from the ceiling and sides of the theatre. There’s an arena floor that fills up in various scenes, and a central pool used innovatively throughout the show – including the bafflingly-clever combination of dry ice and lighting to give the show floor the appearance of a swirling galaxy.
There’s a significant element of fantasy, with the focal character of the preview ever-present through scenes depicting a quick-fire history of Earth, a nigh-on cataclysmic extinction event followed by the evolution of life as we know it today, the rise of metropolises, and the expansion into space.
A young lady in a white dress and distinctive red headscarf, the main character stumbles around this rapidly evolving world, followed by the ascension to the aforementioned intergalactic scene, and the descent into an almost cartoon-esque monochromatic kingdom (complete with a giant crown overhanging the arena) which reminds us of The Playing Cards from Alice in Wonderland.
There are huge winches that mobilise props, constructs and performers, and spectacular acrobatics from the 65 international performers flown in from all corners of the globe for the show.
This is a brilliant coming together of breathtaking visuals, spectacular, heart-stopping acrobatic performances, abstract concepts and a wholly-immersive use of water. And we wished it never had to stop.
We guarantee you we’ll be there on opening night, close enough to feel the water.
You should be too.
