C-SPAN Cities Tour - Cheyenne: Big Boy Steam Engine Renovation
Tour an Old Big Boy Steam Engine with the man who’s leading the effort to restore it – making it the only operational steam engine of its kind. Union Pacific built 25 Big Boy steam engines during World War II to help transport large amounts of cargo across the United States. This particular engine, which has recently been moved into Cheyenne for renovation is one of eight still in existence and is expected to be the only operational machine of its kind once work on it is completed.
Big Boy #4014 UP #844 Double header Cheyenne to Rawlins, Wyoming
Union Pacific, Big Boy, #4014 and Union Pacific, #844 couple together for a rare double header to Utah State. This will be the first official excursion for the #4014 since it's return to steam. This special event was for the 150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad.
Unfortunately with two steam locomotives and a short train, neither locomotive is working very hard. Big Boy #4014 has so much power it is hardly used. It is one of the quietest locomotives I have ever heard. We did have great weather on this day and tens of thousands of people showed up for the big event. The people chasing the train was several miles long. Wyoming is probably the least exciting State to rail fan in with drab scenery, high winds, sparse towns, and much of the rail line inaccessible.
Hopefully in future excursions they can put the usual 18 car train behind the Big Boy and we can let this dog off it's leash and let it bark. We have yet to see the black smoke belching, ground shaking, monster of the rails get to work.

BIG BOY
On the 9th of May 2019 I was fortunate enough to be in the United States of America to witness the World's Largest Operating Steam Locomotive, recently restored 4014 in action. Union Pacific had taken this locomotive from a Park in Los Angeles California in 2013 and transported it back to Cheyenne Wyoming for Major Overhaul and return to service. All so It would be ready for it's anaugural run to Ogden Utah for the 150yrs of the Golden Spike and the linking of the Transcontinental Railway. This video shows the Engine in the freight Yard heading for the staging Area where is performed the re-enactment with 844 and then at the Stage shunting back.
Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 Arrives in Cheyenne, WY
Folks, it is my pleasure to announce that after 1,293 miles, many, MANY months on the road, and after HOURS of video recording, Big Boy, is home.
This video is my last of footage taken by NVRRP of UP's Headin' Home Tour with 4014. In this video, we finish up our pacing. We stop at the WYCON road crossing to pick up the mayor of Cheyenne. Then we cruise into town to the sound of cheering, cameras, whistles, and horns. A lot of the horn blasts, especially at the entrance to Cheyenne under the C&S Bridge, were in celebration of 4014's return. Of course, many learned later on that some of it was for a few very ignorant railfans....( Nevertheless, The Big Boy's final stop along the trip was at the Cheyenne depot. This stop yielded a massive crowd, and a lot of news media to greet it. From here, the locomotive was carefully backed into the Union Pacific Steam Shop, where restoration of the locomotive will take place over the next few years.
We here at NVRRP vow to keep up with the restoration, and eventual operation of Big Boy 4014 in the years to come. But in the meantime, Rate. Comment. Subscribe. ENJOY!!!
This video series has been brought to you by yours truly, with additional footage and pictures provided by NVRRP photographer Ken Valdez.

Union Pacific's Big Boy Train No. 4014 Returns to Cheyenne
On Thursday, August 8, Union Pacific's Big Boy train No. 4014 returned to Cheyenne after a tour across middle America. Cowboy State Daily was there to record the homecoming and interviewed Big Boy 4014's Ed Dickens.
Union Pacific's Big Boy train No. 4014 headed back out on the Union Pacific system beginning July 8 for a tour and the train went through Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
Union Pacific’s historic Big Boy steam locomotive train No. 4014 toured the Union Pacific system to commemorate the transcontinental railroad's 150th anniversary.
The Big Boy’s return to the rails is the product of more than two years of meticulous restoration work by the Union Pacific Steam Team. Big Boy train No. 4014 is the world's only operating Big Boy locomotive.
The Big Boy steam locomotive is the largest steam locomotive in the world and the Big Boy 4014 whistle is unique as well.
Big Boy 4014 delighted crowds across the midwest this summer as the steam locomotive traveled through many states. Cowboy State Daily has reported extensively on Big Boy 4014.
Cowboy State Daily spoke to Ed Dickens about the historic trip. Ed Dickens said the Big Boy 4014 train is magical.
Big Boy 4014 and 844 Doubleheader Steam Locomotives to Ogden
Fantastic sights as the Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 leads a doubleheader with UP's classic 844 from Evanston, Wyoming through Weber Canyon into Ogden, Utah on 8 May 2019. The steam locomotives headed to Ogden for ceremonies commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Golden Spike completing the transcontinental railroad in 1869. Watch as ethereal steam swirls around the Big Boy in near-snow conditions at Evanston, followed by classic run-by passes in spring meadows beside the Weber River. Union Pacific is to be congratulated for having the steam program that has such a good, positive public impact. We had four people with cameras at various locations; hope you enjoy the results. And, to answer questions about the diesel, it is not needed to help move the train, but it supplies auxiliary electric power for some of the cars and it can help with dynamic braking on downgrades, and theoretically could provide motive power in the event of a breakdown. Have you subscribed to the Airailimages Channel on YouTube? Thanks! And here's a link to a video of UP Big Boy 4014 on its deadhead trip to Cheyenne for restoration:
Cheyenne Depot Museum and Cheyenne Big Boy 4004
The Cheyenne Depot Museum is located in the Union Pacific Railroad Depot in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The Depot itself was built in 1887, and was dedicated in 1993 to the city of Cheyenne which eventually established the museum. It was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1973,1992 and the U.S. National Historic Landmark in 2006. Keegan Cool of Spotty Reception visited the Cheyenne Depot Museum on February 7th, 2019 and then as a bonus the Cheyenne Big Boy 4004 on February 8th 2019.
The Cheyenne Big Boy 4004 AKA the Cheyenne Big Boy Steam Engine is one of only Eight remaining Big Boys on display. It originally traveled from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Ogden, Utah. It is the largest Steam Locomotive, designed to pull 3600 tons.
it is located at 17th at Morrie Ave. in Holliday Park, Cheyenne Wyoming.

Big Boy 4014 in California: World's Biggest Steam Train!
Union Pacific Big Boy steam locomotive number 4014 spent the summer of 2019 traveling all around the Union Pacific system to celebrate 150 years since the completion of the transcontinental railroad. After being restored to operation in May, the locomotive traveled from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Ogden, Utah for the Golden Spike 150 Celebration. In July and August, the 4014 traveled throughout much of the midwestern United States including Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. On September 27th, the Big Boy once again left its new home in Cheyenne, Wyoming for a third and final trip of the year, this time throughout much of the southwest. The most important reason for this trip was for 4014 to return to the greater Los Angeles area in California for the first time since being restored to operation. There, there Big Boy would pull a special two day excursion over the famed Cajon Pass and return. Tickets to ride the train were sold as a fundraiser for the Rail Giants Train Museum, the longtime home of the Big Boy for over 50 years. This was a once in a lifetime journey that I definitely didn’t want to miss! So I hit the road for SoCal, once again in search of the Big Boy! Join me as I follow the 4014 Big Boy on its return to California!

UP Big Boy 4014 Visits Southern New Mexico
In late October, Union Pacific Big Boy steam locomotive 4014 made a visit to Southern New Mexico as part of it's Great Race Across The Southwest Tour. In this video we chase the locomotive from a location called Gary (West of Lordsburg) to Lordsburg on October 19. The next day we chased the engine from Lordsburg to El Paso, Texas. Highlights include great morning sun, a meet, and the former Southern Pacific bridge in El Paso.
Union Pacific 4014 is a 4-8-8-4 class Big Boy built by Alco (American Locomotive Company) in 1941. It pulled fast freight trains over the mountains of Utah and Wyoming. It was retired in 1959 and placed on display at the RailGiants Museum in Pomona, CA in 1961. In 2013 the engine was reaquired by UP to be restored to operation. In 2014 the engines left the museum grounds and headed for the UP steam shops in Cheyenne, Wyoming for restoration. In 2019 the engine was brought back to steam and in May the engines went on it's first excursion trip with Up 4-8-4 #844, known as the Great Race to Ogden, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869. In July and August of 2019, 4014 went on the Great Race Across The Midwest tour, and visited states such as Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota. In September 2019 the engine started its Southwest tour mentioned earlier, passing through the states of Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, and Colorado. At the time of this upload, 4014 is in Colorado, and the tour is due to be finished on November 27, when the engine will be in storage until 2020.

First Look! Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 Test Run in Cheyenne, WY
History in the Making! Nearly 60 years after racing along the mainlines of the Union Pacific system, UP Big Boy #4014 triumphantly returns to the Overland Route in 2019! The preparations for this moment date back to 2014, when Union Pacific transported the 4-8-8-4 steam locomotive from the RailGiants museum in Pomona, California, to their steam shops in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Many said it would be impossible to restore such a complex and old steam locomotive, but the fine folks at the UP Steam Program proved their thoughts otherwise once again!
Therefore, in preparation for the highly anticipated Great Race to Ogden with UP #844 this weekend (May 4 & 5th, 2019), Union Pacific steam officials ran a test run of 4014 on the evening of Thursday May 2nd, 2019. This is the the first test run of the newly restored Big Boy on the mainline under its own steam power.
The UP Steam crew ran the 4014 from Cheyenne to Greeley without any major problems. While it did run later than anticipated with low light, I managed to get 2 shots of the Big Boy around the Cheyenne area.
This is only just a preview of what's to come, stay tuned for The Great Race to Ogden!
Thanks for watching!

Big Boy Steam Locomotive Fort Gibson 11/16/2019
Startup at the 8:00 mark
Union Pacific 4014 is a four-cylinder simple articulated 4-8-8-4 Big Boy-type steam locomotive owned and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad. Built in 1941 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Schenectady, New York, No. 4014 is the only operating Big Boy of the eight that remain in existence.
The locomotive operated in revenue service until 1959. It was donated to the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society in late 1961 and thereafter displayed in Fairplex in Pomona, California. In 2013, Union Pacific re-acquired the locomotive and launched a restoration project at their Steam Shop in Cheyenne, Wyoming. In 2019, No. 4014 was operated for the first time after it sat dormant for almost six decades. Part of Union Pacific's heritage fleet, it now operates in excursion service, in addition to hauling revenue freight during ferry moves.
The Big Boy class was developed by Union Pacific and ALCO to handle the grades of the Wasatch Range. UP determined that its goals for the new class could be achieved by making several changes to the existing 4-6-6-4 Challenger design by enlarging the firebox to about 235 by 96 inches (5.97 m × 2.44 m) (about 155 sq ft or 14.4 m2), lengthening the boiler, adding four driving wheels, and reducing the diameter of the driving wheels from 69 to 68 in (1,753 to 1,727 mm).
The Big Boy was articulated like the Mallet locomotive design, although without compounding. It was designed for stability at 80 miles per hour (130 km/h), allowing for a wide margin of reliability and safety, as steam locomotives normally operated well below that speed in freight service. Peak horsepower was reached around 35 mph (56 km/h); optimal tractive effort was reached around 10 mph (16 km/h). It is longer than two city buses and weighs more than a Boeing 747

Union Pacific 4014 Return to Cheyenne
Less than 2 hours from home the Big Boy rolls thru Bushnell, Nebraska on the final day of the month long Great Race across the mid west as seen from the Lincoln Highway just a few miles from the Wyoming state line. We have a few crossings a meet with 8 locos one was the UP 1989 Rio Grande heritage unit, a close chase with a drone, a roll by the old elevator in Bushnell and crossing Lodgepole creek it is not the Mississippi river but it is the longest creek in the world being crossed by the largest steam locomotive in the world. Filmed entirely in Kimball county Nebraska where trains pass by daily but steam is kind of rare these days & Thanks for watching info on Kimball County see
Union Pacific's Big Boy 4014 Visits Victorville on October 9th
Union Pacific's Big Boy 4014 arrived in the City of Victorville at about 10:00am on October 9th 2019.
Called “The Great Race Across the Southwest”, the Big Boy train departed from its home base in Cheyenne, Wyoming on September 27 and is going to the greater Los Angeles area on October 9th.
The locomotive will pull a special Union Pacific passenger train consisting of immaculately maintained 1950’s era Heritage Fleet passenger cars commemorating the 150th anniversary of the completion of the first transcontinental railroad at Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869, according to The Railway and Locomotive Historical Society, Southern California Chapter.
Big Boy 4014
Hey everyone, Mike here.
So a couple weeks ago my buddy Steve and I went chasing Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 Steam Locomotive as it left Vegas and went to California.
Going up in Cheyenne Wyoming I am very familiar with the Big Boy Steam engine. We had 2 of them in town on static display, and I’m pretty sure there is still one there. It is an impressively huge steam engine. Watching it running down that track was very emotional for me to see. I hope I get see it again sometime.
I got a great drone shot with my Mavic 2 Pro as it was going through a pass just South of Las Vegas.
Steve took photos. He is an Awesome photographer.
We jumped in my media van and headed south towards its next stop in California.
At that stop and the next stop the only drone they let up was the Union Pacific Mavic 2, which I’m pretty sure is flown by Scooter. So, I shot some video with my OSMO Pocket. Steve kept taking great pics with his Nikon. Steve and I were both impressed with how many people came out to see this locomotive. Even if they made getting shots without them in it a challenge. We both thought it was great there was a good turnout.
This is some of the footage I shot and a couple of my favorite pics that Steve shot.
If you get a chance to see this locomotive going down the tracks I highly recommend you do.
Big Boy No. 4014 left Cheyenne Wyoming on Friday, September 27 at 8:00am on its trip to commemorate the transcontinental railroad's 150th anniversary.
It rolled out of Las Vegas on Tuesday October 9th.
It will finish its trip November 27th when it rolls back into Cheyenne after touring through several states.
If you want to see it you can find the schedule online at
Take care my friends.
Mike
World's biggest steam engine 'Big Boy' back in action
One of the world’s largest steam trains has returned to the railway tracks in Wyoming, following a five-year refurbishment.
Big Boy N0. 4014 is back on the tracks. Only 25 of the 132-foot-long machines were ever constructed, designed for hauling freight over mountainous terrain in Wyoming and Utah.
The train company Union Pacific took on the challenge of refurbishment in 2013, towing one of the old locomotives from a museum in Pomona, California, to its Steam Shop in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Big Boy 4014 Steam Train: Headin' Home Tour
In July of 2013, the Union Pacific Railroad reacquired Big Boy steam locomotive number 4014 from the Rail Giants Train Museum at the Pomona Fairplex with the intention of restoring number 4014 to operating condition. Once in working order, the locomotive will become part of the Union Pacific's Steam Program. Built in 1941 by the American Locomotive works, the Big Boy is considered to be the biggest steam locomotive ever built.
Come along as we follow the Big Boy on the second leg of its journey to its new home in Cheyenne, Wyoming where it will undergo restoration to operating condition. This video includes a brief introduction followed by video coverage of UP 4014's journey over Cajon Pass as it bids farewell to California on April 28th, 2014.
