Lake Blanche Hike, Big Cottonwood Canyon, Salt Lake City Utah
The Lake Blanche trail head can be found at the goose neck about half way up Big Cottonwood Canyon where the Brighton and Solitude Ski Resorts are near Salt Lake City, Utah. Despite the sign saying the lake is only 2.8 miles away, it's actually about 3.5 miles each way, for a total of a 7 mile hike. The elevation gain is fairly significant, and only those who are in moderate to good shape should attempt the hike. Make sure to bring plenty of water, bug repellent, sun screen and some good shoes! The hike is GORGEOUS. Once you reach the lake, if you take a right, and walk counter clockwise around the lake, you can descend to two other lakes that are fairly close by, or you can walk across the old retaining wall and loop around the whole lake. Make sure to bring a camera! Backpackers can also find several campsites with unhindered views of the lake and surrounding mountains. There is no potable water, or campfires allowed. One last word of caution. I found several groups turning around to descend because they were too tired to continue the climb just 5-10 minutes before the lake. It is worth it to finish the hike! Take breaks and as long as you need, and you will be glad you did.

Lake Blanche, Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah in 4K
This is drone footage of my hike up to Lake Blanche on September 26th. The week before, the last week of Summer, we got a few storms that brought colder than average temperatures and snow to the Wasatch mountains. The leaves on most of the trees haven't even started turning yellow yet.
The trail to Lake Blanche is called Mill B and the trailhead is about half-way up Big Cottonwood Canyon, just before the S-curve you see in the video. The hike is somewhere between 3-3.5 miles one way. It's a pretty steep hike and took me just under two hours to get to the lake.
