La Posta de Mesilla Billy the Kid
La Posta From the Founding of Mesilla to Corn Exchange Hotel to Billy the Kid Museum to Famous Landmark. The La Posta de Mesilla building sits on a lot known as a terreno de solar. This was a grant made by the state of Chihuahua, Mexico to a Mexican citizen on which the citizen could build a house. Within a year or so, neither the grantee or the lot are located in Mexico. They are both now in the United States. The grantee sells the lot to a merchant who then establishes a store. This merchant takes on a partner and eventually sells out to this partner. This is just the beginning of the story of La Posta de Mesilla. Learn more about La Posta de Mesilla and Billy the Kid among others by purchasing the book on Amazon:

Visit to Mesilla New Mexico
Mesilla (Little Tableland) is the best-known and most visited historical community in Southern New Mexico. Since its' beginning, around 1848, Mesilla has had a major influence on the economic, cultural, historical, and political life of the Mesilla Valley. From the Gadsden Purchase, to the Civil War, to the Butterfield Stage Coach Trail, to the trial of Billy the Kid, to being a lively social center in the 1880s--Mesilla has been a prominent part of the rich history of the Southwest.
Today, many of Mesilla's population of nearly 2,200 residents are direct descendents of Mesilla's early settlers. As such, they have retained many of the hearty folk qualities of the original founders. Mesilla has a rich and diverse heritage with the integration of Indian, Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo-American cultures. Perhaps the greatest import of the past history is the physical character of the community itself. The traditional adobe structures and architectural features modified through time because of style and technology still remain as a reminder of the long and significant history of the town.

Find out about our new book at
The building housing El Patio dates from the late 1800's, and was used by the current owner's great-grandfather as his law office (where he defended Billy the Kid at the end of the block). El Patio is a total dive bar, but is also rich in history, with exposed 150 year old adobe, and mementos from its extensive past adorning the walls. El Patio was also named one of the best bars in the US by Men's Journal.

New Mexico Tourist Attractions
One of the most interesting New Mexico tourist attractions and New Mexico landmarks you'll find when you visit New Mexico is La Posta. An old building located in Mesilla, New Mexico and a distinct part of New Mexico history.
La Posta: From the Founding of Mesilla, to Corn Exchange Hotel, to Billy the Kid Museum, to Famous Landmark. The story of a 160-year old building, its people, and its place.
The building sits on a lot next to the plaza. The lot is a terreno de solar, a grant to a Mexican citizen by the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, on which to build a house. By the terms of the grant, the grantee is obliged to own a horse and a gun. Within a year or so the grantee -- and his lot -- are no longer in Mexico -- they are both in the United States.

Las Cruces Awarded Federal Funds
11.22.11 (LAS CRUCES) -- The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development is granting a sustainable community grant to Dona Ana County which will help improve the area's economic competitiveness.
Two million dollars is what's coming to the city and county as part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's sustainable community awards.
This will allow us to take a look at our communities as a whole system, as a whole group of activities and facilities and on that basis make decisions that will be efficient, and effect and that ideally will also have cost benefits in terms of reducing cost both for families but also for government, said County Commissioner Billy Garrett.
The federal funds will help connect housing with jobs, schools and transportation.
I think there are going to be very tangible results down the road. One of the things we know is that currently people are spending more than fifty percent of their house hold budgets on a combination of transportation and housing and a big part of that has to do with the way the developing is happening, he said.
A total of 27 communities and organizations are receiving community challenge grants while 29 regional areas are getting regional planning grants.
A very important part of the grant, this is not about doing all of the planning its about setting up ways of doing it so that we'll have a better way to eventually reach everybody, he said.
The money coming to Dona Ana County will be used mostly for planning. County leaders say the three-year project will include community input.
