rulison colorado June 17, 2012 1:17 PM
Project Rulison, named after the rural community of Rulison, Colorado, was a 40-kiloton nuclear test project in the United States on September 10, 1969, about 8 miles SE of the town of Grand Valley, Colorado (now named Parachute, Colorado) near western Colorado's Grand Valley in Garfield County. The location of Surface Ground Zero is 39°24′19.0″N 107°56′54.7″W. It was part of the Operation Mandrel weapons test series under the name Mandrel Rulison, as well as the Operation Plowshare project which explored peaceful engineering uses of nuclear explosions. The peaceful aim of Project Rulison was to determine if natural gas could be easily liberated from underground regions.
After the successful test in which approximately 10 times the amount of natural gas was liberated as compared to traditional methods, fear of radiation made the natural gas, which contained a small and continually decreasing percentage of radionuclides, unmarketable.[1] The Department of Energy began a clean up of the site in the 1970s which was completed in 1998. A buffer zone put in place by the state of Colorado still exists around the site. A January 2005 report by the DOE stated that radioactivity levels were normal at the surface and in groundwater, though a later report due in 2007 is expected to more fully explore if there is subsurface contamination and whether or not radioactivity is still spreading outward from the blast site itself.

Colorado Experience: Uranium Mania
America's explosive successes in peace and war were fueled by the radioactive wealth from the Colorado Plateau. The mineral carnotite was a Pandora's rock of scientific, medical, industrial and military power for 20th Century America with its unleashed resources of radium, vanadium and uranium. Even though the energetic and frenetic mining and refining of uranium ore in Western Colorado has mostly ceased, its remaining trace elements of memory and controversy still radiate from Uravan and Grand Junction throughout the state, the nation and the world.

Colorado Centennial 13ers - California Peak
- GAIA GPS discounts for subscribers
This week's Hiking in Colorado adventure took us all the way down south to the Sangre de Cristo range as we make another push to summit another Colorado Centennial 13er. Our target was California Peak (13,849'). This area gave us excellent views of the San Luis Valley, The Crestones, and the Great Sand Dunes National Park. This ended up being an extremely long day at just around 11 miles and 5,000' of vertical elevation gain. It was a great trip and well worth the time.

Bureau of Land Management Headquarters to Move to Colorado, Senator Says
The Trump administration will move the Bureau of Land Management headquarters from Washington, D.C., to Grand Junction, Colo., Senator Cory Gardner said Monday. It is a move that would put top officials closer to the lands they manage but farther from government policymakers. Mr. Gardner, Republican of Colorado, has pushed for the change for years, and called it a victory for communities in the West. “The problem with Washington is too many policymakers are far removed from the people they are there to serve,” he said in a statement. “Ninety-nine percent of the land the B.L.M. manages is west of the Mississippi River, and so should be the B.L.M. headquarters.”Others saw more political motivations behind the decision, believing the true intent was to weaken the department. Representative Raúl M. Grijalva, a Democrat from Arizona and the chair of the National Resources Committee, said the move was part of what he considered the administration’s agenda to hand over public lands to fossil fuel companies.“The B.L.M. officials based in Washington are here to work directly with Congress and their federal colleagues, and that function is going to take a permanent hit if this move goes forward,” he said. “The agency will lose a lot of good people because of this move, and I suspect that’s the administration’s real goal here.”The bureau, which is part of the Interior Department and manages more than one-tenth of the nation’s land, covers about 388,000 square miles of public land, almost all of it in 12 Western states. It has about 9,000 employees, most of them in local offices. Fewer than 400 are in Washington. The Washington employees include top officials who liaise with the rest of the government, prompting fears that a move from the capital could reduce the bureau’s clout. Jennifer Rokala, executive director of the Center for Western Priorities, a conservation group, said the announcement was “nothing but a P.R. stunt” and would drain the agency of officials who wouldn’t want to make the move. “More than 90 percent of B.L.M. staff already work outside of Washington, D.C., and the agency has dozens of offices across the West,” she said in a statement. “Moving senior B.L.M. leadership would only turn the agency into an afterthought, rather than a core piece of the Interior Department.”It was not immediately clear how many jobs would remain in Washington or how much the move would cost. The Bureau of Land Management and the Interior Department have not confirmed the move and did not immediately return messages seeking comment Monday night. The Trump administration has sought to expand mining and drilling in public lands. In April, a federal judge ruled that the Interior Department acted illegally when it tried to lift an Obama-era moratorium on coal mining on public lands. Grand Junction has around 63,000 people and is about 250 miles west of Denver, near the Utah border. Gov. Jared Polis of Colorado, a Democrat, applauded the administration’s decision on Monday. “Grand Junction is the perfect location for the B.L.M. because of community support, location closer to the land B.L.M. manages, and the positive impact it will have on our western Colorado economy,” he said. “Hard to think of a better place to house the department responsible for overseeing our beloved public lands.”Jacey Fortin contributed reporting.

2017 Colorado Wildlife and Transportation Summit
State, federal and private wildlife and transportation groups met this week at Colorado's inaugural Wildlife and Transportation Summit. Inspired by the success of the wildlife crossing project on Highway 9 in Grand County, the 2-day event focused on developing a statewide action plan to improve highway safety and to protect the state's wildlife resources. Similar wildlife crossings, like those used on Highway 9, are being considered in other areas of the state to provide safe travel for motorists and wildlife alike.
