BRIDGETOWN-17-Elk Rock Garden (Bishop's Close)
A Sunday morning stroll through the garden at Elk Rock, also known as Bishop's Close. The neighborhood is called Dunthorpe.
Per Wikipedia:
Dunthorpe is an affluent[2] unincorporated suburb of Portland, Oregon, United States. It is located just south of the Portland city limits and north of the Multnomah County line on the west side of the Willamette River. Lewis & Clark College, Tryon Creek State Park, and Lake Oswego are nearby.
Elk Rock Gardens of the Bishop's Close are located on a hillside estate overlooking the Willamette River in Dunthorpe, Oregon, in the United States. Peter Kerr started the gardens in 1916 on a 13-acre (5.3 ha) estate that passed to the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon after his death in 1957.[1] The estate includes a manor house-inspired residence and other structures, and is open to the public.[2]
Magnolias and other native and non-native trees, shrubs, and plants grow in the gardens.[3] Dunthorpe is an unincorporated community on the west side of the Willamette south of Portland and north of Lake Oswego along Oregon Route 43.
Kerr moved to Portland from Scotland in 1888 and started a grain business. He and his brother and Kerr's business partner bought land on the hillside in the early 1890s. They built a cottage on the site and lived there until the other two men married and moved elsewhere. Kerr, the sole remaining occupant, married Laurie King in 1905. They lived in the cottage until 1916, when a new house resembling a Scottish manor was completed on the site. John Olmsted of the Olmsted Brothers landscape architects, sited the house to provide a view of Mount Hood. After the manor was finished, Kerr, encouraged by his wife, began work on a large garden.[1] Kerr planted the garden with plants obtained during his travels, as well as native Northwest plants. He spent nearly six decades developing the garden prior to his death at the age of 95.[4]
Rock hounding (crystals) at Highway 97 and Westside road.
Took the kids out rock hounding today, looking for zeolites, quartz crystals, Amethyst, and found some citrine too. The new Westside road interchange off highway 97 in West Kelowna has blasted out some of Mount Boucherie's basalt revealing many fresh vugs full of all sorts of Silicates. Some quite exciting.
Grant's Getaways: Winter Bird Watching in Oregon
Winter in Oregon is the perfect time for bird watching. Flocks of Tundra Swans seem to fill the sky on six-foot-wingspans and then glide in for a well-deserved break.
The swans can be seen across the state at the following places:

Fernhill Wetlands in Washington County is a prime hideout to catch a view to tundra swans.
Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge in Polk County where the visitor access is easy just off State Highway 22, west of Salem.
Further afield, try the Klamath Wildlife Area in southern Oregon where they swan show is reliable all winter long until the big birds head back to the arctic in March.

There seem to be a lot of abandoned buildings around here. I guess it's an aging town that has a reduced budget. Should be quite the investors opportunity, especially for the fairly fertile land, as long as there aren't too many more droughts in the future.

Not only is Ecola State park beautiful but even the drive into this unique place is spectacular. The road is narrow so big vehicles have to be careful when there is approaching traffic.

Most beautiful places in the world include international destinations like Greece, Croatia, Chile and Italy, as well as U.S. places such as Colorado, Washington, South Carolina and many other states. Visitors get to choose among spectacular mountain ranges, sparkling emerald lakes, thundering waterfalls, dreamy ancient towns perched on high cliffs, and parks that attract millions of people from all over the world. »Maroon Bells, USA
Maroon Bells, USA
Located only about 10 miles from Aspen, Colorado, the Maroon Bells are two 14,000-foot peaks in the Elk Mountains that are reflected in crystal-clear Maroon Lake, snuggled in a glacial valley. They are the crown jewels of the Rocky Mountains and by far one of the most photographed scenes in the country.
It is difficult to say when the timeless beauty of these two sentinels mirrored in the lake is more striking: In the summer, when every hiking trail takes you through fields of wild flowers, in the fall, when tall aspen trees dazzle with a rainbow of fall colors, or in the winter, when snow and ice silence the world. The best photo opportunities are from one of the many hiking trails – access by motor vehicles is limited. The lake is popular among fly-fishermen – even if they don’t catch anything, the beauty all around them is enough. 25 Most Beautiful Places in the World - Photo: nature guy/Fotolia

Grand Canyon, USA
The Grand Canyon is a steep, 1-mile-deep, and up to 18-mile-wide gash in the fabric of the world, an immense gorge carved by the Colorado River over the last 5,000 years. Its sheer size is breathtaking and although you can see only a small portion of it even from the best vantage point, its geology and its age fire the imagination. The layers of colorful rock show the passage of time and some of the rocks at the bottom are 1,8 billion years old.
There is a lot of life growing on the canyon’s steep sides – you can see more of it hiking the trails of the northern rim, where it is also less crowded. Most people limit their visit to the breathtaking views from the southern rim. Some of the most popular viewpoints are Yavapai Observation Station, Mary Colter’s Lookout Studio, and Mather Point.

Blue Ridge Mountains, USA
Located in the eastern United States and part of the massive Appalachians, the Blue Ridge Mountains stretch from their southernmost end in Georgia all the way northward to Pennsylvania. Between the Blue Ridge and the rest of the Appalachians lies the Great Appalachian Valley. When seen from a distance, the Blue Ridge Mountains appear blue – the trees that release a gas called isoprene are responsible for the bluish color and thus the mountains’ name.
Within the Blue Ridge Mountains are two large national parks: The Shenandoah and the Great Smoky Mountains. The best way to enjoy and get to know Blue Ridge is by taking the Blue Ridge Parkway, a 469-mile-long beautiful scenic highway that runs along the ridge together with the renowned Appalachian Trail and which connects the two parks. 25 Most Beautiful Places in the World - Photo: Phils Photography/Fotolia

South Fork Clackamas Wild and Scenic River
A small rectangle of BLM-administered land, almost all but surrounded by the west side of the Mount Hood National Forest, is the gateway to some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Clackamas River basin.
Two of the taller waterfalls are on the South Fork Clackamas Wild and Scenic River. Less than an hour’s drive from Portland and just outside Estacada, the South Fork Clackamas River merges with Memaloose Creek and then joins the main stream of the Clackamas River.
In 2009, 4.2 miles of the South Fork Clackamas were designated as wild and scenic by Congress. Only six-tenths of that river span is officially managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The surrounding land is rugged and steep, with elevations ranging from 2,200 feet down to 600 feet.
Most of the watershed, filled with Pacific silver fir, Douglas fir and western hemlock, is under the care of the U.S. Forest Service.
But wow, those waterfalls.
The South Fork Clackamas Falls, above the Memaloose Creek confluence, stretches tall and thin for 190 feet. At its top, there are several pools that drop upon each other before the big fall.
Then below the subdued and forested confluence, where the river feels more like a creek, there is the Lower South Fork Clackamas Falls, which is wide and 60 feet tall. The large pool at the bottom opens up into a shallow riverbed dotted with rocks where spring chinook and coho salmon fry can be seen. Winter and summer steelhead also call the south fork home beneath the falls.
Deer and elk are in the area, seasonally; and spotted owls and bald eagles also call the watershed home, according to a joint BLM and U.S. Forest Service analysis.
BE AWARE: The South Fork Clackamas River is an area of concern for bats. More specifically transferring white nose syndrome. White nose syndrome was found to be present in western Washington this spring. This wiped out bats across eastern United States in past years. Several watersheds in the BLM's Salem District where identified as priority watersheds for the White Nose Syndrome Response because of these cave/tunnel resources. Individuals visiting the area can transfer material on there shoes from one location to another.
Be sure to clean your equipment and boots before and after entering the tunnels to prevent the spread of white nose syndrome.

Meet the Humanitarian -
After leaving his village to receive a degree in Engineering, Bishnu Adhikari returned to his home in Nepal with a newfound faith and a determination to help improve the living conditions of the area. Bishnu now travels to remote villages in the Himalayan Mountains to build roads, schools and water systems, all while living with his faith and respecting his culture and his family’s expectations.
Meet the Coach -
As Head Football Coach of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, Ken Niumatalolo balances the pressures of his high-stress job by putting his family and faith first. In the competitive, high-stakes world of college football, he made the shocking decision to cancel staff meetings on Sundays, traditionally seen as critical to the team’s success, to instead honor the Sabbath day.
Meet the Fighter -
With her husband’s help, extreme sports enthusiast Carolina Muñoz Marin has fought her way to the top of women’s amateur kickboxing in Costa Rica, challenging the traditional stereotypes of a Mormon woman. In between family time and training for competitions, Carolina and her husband run a charity to help those in Costa Rica who are less fortunate.
Meet the Bishop -
Jermaine Sullivan works full-time as an academic counselor to 200 students in order to support his wife and three kids. He also volunteers full-time as a Bishop of a Mormon church in Atlanta, Georgia.
