By Lynn Nottage
Directed by Tazewell Thompson
Featuring...
Dawn Ursula as Esther
Beth Hylton as Mrs. Van Buren
Drew Kopas as Mr. Marks
Bueka Uwemedimo as George
Jade Wheeler as Mayme
Jenn Walker as Mrs. Dickson
Wearing her heart on her sleeve while sewing intimates for her clientele, Esther is the talented African American seamstress in turn-of-the-century New York who has built a savings for herself making beautiful undergarments—while earnestly daydreaming of new beginnings, romantic possibilities, and the lingering affection she shares with a Jewish fabric merchant. But when an egregious deception cuts short heartfelt desires, can class, culture and circumstance outmatch the strength of human spirit? Inspired by a true story, Intimate Apparel is a heart-rending contemporary work in the style of an enduring classic—from the first female playwright to win two Pulitzers.

His world is turned upside down when he meets Sylvia, a young woman on the cusp of deafness herself. “In a word… terrific.”
—Baltimore Post Examiner
“A touch of magic. Joseph W. Ritsch’s staging underlines Rebeck’s affectionable homage to the whole world of theatre. All three actors shine!”
—The Baltimore Sun
“Totally worth the trip! Begins as a seemingly simplistic comedy about the trials of being an under-paid and under-used actor, but as the play continues, comedy becomes a lesson in profound, stark truths.”
—MD Theatre Guide
“Impressive! Loads of laughs… hilariously embarrassing confrontations. The more miserable the three characters are on stage, the more delighted we are in the seats.”
—City Paper
“Real fun! Everyman does have an immense love for playmaking, and that love comes beaming across the footlights.”
—WYPR
“Spot-on and visually stunning! Everyman’s tagline is ‘Great Stories, Well Told,’ and that could not be more in evidence.”
—DC Metro Theatre Arts
A masterpiece of comic clockwork (Wall Street Journal) from the creator of TV's Smash, THE UNDERSTUDY places the backstage tension of a frantic rehearsal in the spotlight. Meet Harry, the real actor who's just a tad bitter about his lot in the theatrical world – you see, he's just the understudy. The grossly overpaid, action movie star he's working with doesn't understand the play. The charmingly lovesick stage manager happens to be his ex. And the backstage technician appears to be high – oh it's just another day in the glamorous life of being the one who didn't quite make the cut! Will they ever pull it together before showtime?
Tiny Teaser: WILD WITH HAPPY
Wild with Happy
By Colman Domingo
Directed by Jeremy B. Cohen
May 28--Jun 29
Grief is a funny thing. Gil's boyfriend has left him, his acting career isn't exactly taking off, and his mother just passed away. He's not taking it all very well. But luckily his boisterous Aunt Glo, a sensitive funeral director, and his outrageous best friend may be exactly what he needs. Colman Domingo's new comedy, a recent smash hit at New York's Public Theater, is a wild ride through love, loss, and, just maybe, The Most Magical Place on Earth.

Beth Henley's Crimes of the Heart debuted in the early 1980s - the beginning of an era that celebrated the increased role of women in the workplace and a decade where the female voice was heard louder than ever before - not only theatre, but in politics, business, education and more. Over 30 years later, there are still surprising gender inequalities in average salaries, education and even the fact that female playwrights are still produced far less than their male counterparts. Why aren't women playwrights being heard on our stages? Join our esteemed panel of professionals as we discuss the role of women in theatre today and how the surprising lack of the feminine voice on stage may be a reflection on society itself.

Winner of the 1981 Pulitzer Prize and the NY Drama Critics Circle Award, Beth Henley's comedy brings you into the Mississippi household of the Magrath sisters. Babe has just shot her husband because she didn't like his looks. Meg is back in town after a failed attempt in the music business and a nervous breakdown. And poor Lenny - everyone has forgotten her 30th birthday...plus, her pet horse was just struck by lightning! Bad luck certainly runs deep among the Magrath clan. But with warm-hearted laughs and touching family moments, the sisters forgive the past, face the present, and embrace the future in this contemporary American stage classic.

In its Baltimore/Washington premiere, the play could not have ask for a much more vibrant or rewarding production than the one offered at Everyman...'Vera Stark' is well worth meeting. Dawn Ursula is brilliant...the actress, one of Everyman's resident artists, has the beauty and nuance to make a riveting Vera.
-- Baltimore Sun
Dawn Ursula just kills it in the title role. A fearlessly intelligent and deliciously vicious annihilation of Hollywood.
-- City Paper
Once you meet Vera Stark, you can't forget her...an incandescent career high for Dawn Ursula...not enough can be said about her performance. It is a true star turn, showing breathtaking versatility (she sings, she dances, she acts!) and generosity of spirit, both playful and poignant.
-- DC Theater Scene
A brilliant combination of humor and drama...Walter Dallas' cast is the perfect fit for the play. Beth Hylton is the epitome of starlet turned diva as Gloria Mitchell...Dawn Ursula embodies Vera Stark in a saucy vein. Her comic delivery is a scream. A production well worth enjoying!
-- DC Metro Theater Arts
It's the height of 1930s Hollywood. Film studios are filled with glitz, glamor, and eager starlets just waiting to be discovered. Enter Vera Stark, a determined and headstrong African-American maid to a white movie star. But it turns out that Vera is an actress, too! When the stars align and both actresses are cast in the same Southern epic, the story behind the cameras leaves Vera with an unexpected and controversial legacy scholars will question for decades to come. Deliciously funny and wildly entertaining, Vera Stark uses today's obsession and fascination with tabloids and celebrity gossip to get to the truth behind this mysterious legend of Hollywood.
A not-to-be-missed new work. Moves from innocent to sexy to funny without breaking a sweat. - Vogue
