Hong Kong's 30th food expo draws a big crowd amid prolonged protests in the city
(17 Aug 2019) HONG KONG'S 30TH FOOD EXPO DRAWS A BIG CROWD AMID PROLONGED PROTESTS IN THE CITY
Thousands of people made their visit to the food expo on Saturday (17 AUGUST 2019) amid prolonged anti-extradition bill protests in Hong Kong.
This is the 30th anniversary of HKTDC Food Expo, which kicked off on August 15th. Organized by HKTDC (Hong Kong Trade Development Council), the expo has many international food booths selling various delicacies from local craft coffee beer, truffle ice-cream to Japanese plum wine sorbet.
Chengdu pepper ice drip coffee, and matcha and abalone craft beers were among a handful of fusion drinks that stood out, drawing curious crowds.
Leo Lai, owner of Hong Kong cafe Valor Cheung Chau, said his Chengdu pepper ice drip coffee has a unique taste.
When you drink it, you first taste is sweet. The honey is sweet, and bitters of the coffee, and shower of the lemon and the aftertaste is Chengdu pepper spicy, the 26-year-old cafe owner said.
Junnie Dai, marketing manager of Koway Holdings which distributes the world's first abalone craft beer produced by Kansom Ausralia, said they have three kinds of abalone beer - Green Lip and Samphire Gose, Abalone and Enoki Golden Ale, and Seared Black Lip and Truffle Stout.
She added that abalone beer goes well with seafood dishes because of its rich taste.
The Food Expo features more than 1,570 exhibitors from over 20 countries and regions including South Korea, Australia and mainland China. In conjunction with the Food Expo, there are fairs dedicated to tea, home appliances, and beauty, and Chinese medicine and health products.
This year's Food Expo will end on August 19th.

As the US-China trade war continues, US exporters find it harder to do business in the Chinese market. Hong Kong GLOBAL FOOD TOUR!
I thought a lot before posting this video. I filmed and edited this about 3 months ago, before the HK protests had hit full speed. I don't want to come across as insensitive by posting this (a fun and food related HK video) during such a turbulent time. But the fact is, Hong Kong is and always will be one of my favourite places, especially when it comes to eating!
And I figured, the world always needs more positivity. So I decided to share this. Here's a fun, non-political video about Hong Kong! Enjoy!
love you all xx
