Gwangju′s Asian Arts Theatre opens in Gwangju Friday
국립아시아문화전당 예술극장 개관
For a while now,... it has been common for Asian arts professionals to use Western arts and philosophy as guidelines for their work...rather than their own Asian roots.
But Korea′s southwestern city of Gwangju is trying to change that with the opening of the Asian Arts Theatre.
Kim Ji-yeon reports.
Gwangju, known as the Korean City of Light, is expected to soon become a global platform for contemporary art.
And at the center of it stands the 13-thousand square meter Asian Arts Theatre, which opens on Friday.
″With a lineup of some 40 productions for the next three weeks, the arts venue aims at becoming a space where participating artists can communicate and understand better the influence that their Asian identities have on their work.″
Among the performance pieces stand out ′Baling′, based on Malaysia′s 1955 Baling Talks.
Performers reenact the time when national leaders tried to resolve the country′s division ... failing to do so and leading to the creation of Malaysia and Singapore.
Mark Teh says the Korean audience can easily relate to his work as a similar scenario took place in Korea′s history.
″It′s interesting to see how in a slightly different part of the world, our leaders were making similar choices... The next piece I want to do is called The Complete Future of Malaysia, which is into the future... And we would be very happy if we have the opportunity, if we get invited again, to do it again at the Asian Culture Center, Asian Arts Theater... And also the project that′s asking lots of pertinent questions about Asia and what it means and the many things it could mean.″

TRAVEL STORIES: Good Morning, Gwangju☀️
Hello Everyone! In this Travel Stories episode, I'm waking up to Gwangju (광주), also known as the City of Light. Gwangju is the sixth largest city in South Korea, and has so many places to explore. It also has a very deep history. In 1929, students boldly held demonstrations against Japanese rule, and in May of 1980 another student-led uprising took place, this time against the government of Chun Doo Hwan (춘 두 환). Sadly, this one escalated into a massacre. I had the opportunity to visit the on-campus museum paying tribute to the May 18th Uprising, as you'll see in the video.
Studying at Chonnam National University (전남 대학교) was such a treat! I enjoyed frequenting all of the coffee shops around campus, and getting to know some of the people who worked there! I also had the exciting opportunity to attend a K-Pop concert on campus hosted by the 2015 Gwangju Universiade, where I watched Shinee, BTS (방탄소년단), 4 Minute, Exid, and Minah of Girl's Day perform live!!!???? So make sure you stay tuned until the end of the video to see that footage!

[K-MOVE] Gwangju Biennale / YTN KOREAN
Facial expressions of dozens of workers are vividly described in the painting.
The five-meter-wide two-meter-tall painting has been created by seven artists.
This is a type of artwork that represents the so-called socialist painting.
A tiger looks like bursting out of the canvas. The author said it took seven hours for him to draw the eyes of the tiger, which look real.
North Korea presented the Gwangju Biennale with 22 paintings in four different genres, including a literati painting whose traditional drawing technique is known to have almost disappeared.
[Moon Beom-Kang, curator]
They (visitors to the Biennale) will have a chance to appreciate the really top-of-the-line paintings of North Korea, which claim to advocate for diversity, as well as socialism and realism.
More than 160 artists from 43 countries have taken part in the globally-recognized contemporary biennale hosted by South Korea's southwestern city of Gwangju with some 300 artworks.
Under the theme of Imagined Borders, the 2018 Gwangju Biennale is scheduled to run through November 11.

360-Degree Theater Lets You Experience VR Without A Headset
This theater takes VR to a whole new level. Space 360 is a spherical projection theater. It creates a small universe around viewers. This eliminates the need for VR headsets. The theater is located next to Lucerium National Science Museum in Gwangju, South Korea. Here's what you can see.
The 12-meter wide sphere can hold 45 people at a time. Visitors walk down a glass observation bridge. There are 12 projectors in the sphere that create the images. Each session is 15 minutes long. The content covers important milestones in history. Like the Big Bang. The origins of life. Human civilization. Followed by changes due to global warming.
The exhibit opened to the public in September 2017. Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power donated the sphere theater to Space 360. Space 360's goal is to give visitors an immersive VR experience using the newest technology possible. It also sets an example for digital 360 theaters of the future.
Anyone over the age of 8 can visit Space 360. It costs 3,000 Korean Won or 2.82 American dollars to enter. The theater is a permanent installation and can be visited year-round.

Space 360 – Spherical Projection Theater
The Gwangju National Science Museum and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd chose Front Pictures to deliver a projection system to South Korea’s first spherical projection theater – Space 360.
The sphere – which is 12 meters in diameter – is located next to Lucerium National Science Museum in Gwangju. Construction started in September 2016 and finished in July 2017. The sphere opened for visitors in September 2017.
Space 360 can be considered a true VR theater of the future. When visitors step inside, they find themselves on a transparent, glass observation bridge, which crosses the sphere’s interior. A crisp 360 video projection around, above, and below the viewers fully immerses them as they stand and watch. They literally dive into a virtual world without having to use VR headsets.
The projection system runs on 12 WUXGA laser source Barco projectors powered by a single Screenberry™ media server that provides 27.6 MP video playback and auto-calibration.
