Places to see in ( Daytona Beach - USA )
Places to see in ( Daytona Beach - USA )
Daytona Beach is a city on Florida’s Atlantic coast. It’s known for Daytona International Speedway, which hosts February’s iconic Daytona 500 NASCAR race. The beach has hard-packed sand where driving is permitted in designated areas. Near the boardwalk’s rides and arcades, Daytona Beach Bandshell stages free summer concerts. Steps from the beach, Daytona Lagoon water park offers go-karts, laser tag and waterslides.
Daytona Beach, famous as the World Center of Racing and home of NASCAR, is part of the East Central Florida greater metropolitan area. Daytona Beach is the best known of the seven area communities. Although the wide 23-mile (37km) stretch of white sandy beach is still the biggest attraction here, with over 8 million visitors flocking to the area every year, the metro area is rapidly changing from event Mecca to family oriented resort destination. Historical sites like the Main Street Pier, the Oceanfront Boardwalk and the Clocktower in Oceanfront Park add to the appeal of this exciting city.
Daytona Beach hosts large groups of out-of-towners that descend upon the city for various events, notably Speedweeks in early February when over 200,000 NASCAR fans come to attend the season-opening Daytona 500. Other events include the NASCAR Coke Zero Sugar 400 race in July, Bike Week in early March, Biketoberfest in late October, and the 24 Hours of Daytona endurance race in January.
The city of Daytona Beach is split in two by the Halifax River lagoon, part of the Intracoastal Waterway, and sits on the Atlantic Ocean. It is bordered on the north by Holly Hill and Ormond Beach and on the south by Daytona Beach Shores, South Daytona and Port Orange.
The Museum of Arts and Sciences is the primary cultural facility for Daytona Beach and Volusia County. Other museums located in the city include the Southeast Museum of Photography and the Halifax Historical Museum. The Museum of Arts and Sciences is actually a collection of museums and galleries and includes the Klancke Environmental Complex, the Cuban Museum, Root Family Museum featuring one of the largest Coca-Cola collections in the world, the Dow American Gallery and the Bouchelle Center for Decorative Arts which together form what is probably one of the finest collections of furniture and decorative arts in the Southeast. There are also changing exhibitions and a children's science center opened in 2008. Since 1952, the non-profit Daytona Beach Symphony Society has sponsored performances by U.S. and international orchestras, opera and dance companies each season at the Peabody Auditorium.

An old iron furnace and a very old cemetery at Pine Grove Furnace State Park
An old 18th century iron furnace, a museum for the Appalachian Trail, an old cemetery and more history at Pine Grove Furnace State Park
The furnace dates back to about 1770 and was used to produce iron though the late 19th century.
The cemetery isn’t easy to see but its right by the sign. Most of the gravestones are gone.
You can still find what’s left of some of them
The website Find a Grave listed a 1961 news article from the Gettysburg Times
“The plot at Pine Grove Furnace has been badly desecrated and only a few markers remain but at one time there were many a number of unmarked graves or graves designated only by field stones without inscriptions.”

1890 Flagler Buys the Hotel Ormond
Two years after opening the Ponce de Leon, Flagler continued expanding his Florida holdings. He built a railroad bridge across the St. Johns River to gain access to the southern half of the state and purchased part interest in the Hotel Ormond, owned by Utley J. White, in 1890. Later the following year on May 1, 1891 Mr. Flagler purchased the remaining Anderson and Price interests, retaining the former owners as managers and making The Hotel Ormond part of the Florida East Coast System. At that time the hotel was valued at one hundred and twelve thousand, five hundred dollars. This was the beginning of unprecedented growth along the east coast of Florida and the little town of Ormond would become a pleasant stopover in Henry’s path southward.
After Flagler obtained possession of the hotel it was greatly enlarged throughout the next 10 years and became one of the most famous hostelries in Florida.
