Lady Bird's Whistle Stop: Rock Hill, SC: 10/7/64, 1:37 PM.
You are listening to a White House Communications Agency sound recording from Lady Bird Johnson’s Whistle Stop Tour across the South in October 1964, made available on YouTube with a slideshow of photos from her trip by the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin, TX. We hope you enjoy it.
About Lady Bird’s Whistle Stop:
Three months after the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, President and Lady Bird Johnson turned their attention to the upcoming election. While LBJ was key to helping the Democratic ticket carry the South in 1960, many Southerners were angry about the civil rights legislation. Lady Bird knew she knew she would face hostile crowds, but she wanted to carry their message to Southerners and express the Johnsons’ pride in that part of the country.
As aide Liz Carpenter said later, “Our star attraction was a Southern-bred First Lady. We were supposed to blow kisses and spread love through eight states and make them like it….”
Lady Bird’s Whistle Stop campaign tour journey began in Washington, D. C., on October 6, continued for four days through eight states, totaled 1,682 miles, and stopped in 28 cities, with ending in New Orleans on October 9, 1964. Lady Bird, her daughters Lynda and Luci, 100 or so members of the press, and more than a dozen white-gloved ‘hostesses” rode aboard the un-air-conditioned Lady Bird Special.
Hospitality committees along the route gave out pennants, buttons, and other small campaign material for visitors aboard the Lady Bird Special and the crowds gathered to see Lady Bird. In the dining car, in another nod to Southern hospitality, guests were treated to specialty dishes from each state along the route: Virginia ham, North Carolina BBQ, Georgia pecan pie, and Louisiana shrimp creole were among the choices.
In addition to the hospitality committees, travelers and dignitaries from the states could also visit with the Masters of Ceremonies, Congressman Hale Boggs and Luther Hodges, depending on which leg of the journey they were on board. The Masters of Ceremonies were also responsible for introducing Mrs. Johnson and her daughters to the crowds at each of the stops.

GHOST OF ~ Gold Hill~ North Carolina
A trip along the Gold Hill Rail-Trail through this historic village will transport you back to a time when North Carolina was the country's only gold-producing state. Signs posted every few hundred feet along the mile-long dirt and gravel path detail the history of mining in the state.
While gold was unofficially discovered here in 1799 by a 12-year-old boy, in its glory days Gold Hill was the richest mining property east of the Mississippi.
There have been many deaths in the town of Gold Hill.
Many people feel the hair stand up on the back of their necks when in the powder house.
Another story is of a young man named Joe Newman. Joe was the brother of a “colorful con-man” named Walter George Newman. He became very distraught with the way his brother handled the mines in Gold Hill. This, along with the loss of a love, began to take toll on Joe.
On April 17, 1900, Joe placed several sticks of dynamite on his chest and took his own life. Some say that his brother, George, had something to do with it, but authorities couldn’t prove any foul play.
George Newman died in 1918. Both spirits have been spotted in Gold Hill. The dismembered body of Joe was seen floating in the air near Randolph Mine. George Newman has been seen walking the streets of Gold Hill, as if the town were still in his control.
Randolph Mine in Gold Hill has the distinction of being haunted by two ghosts, so when lights are seen in the area, no one is really sure which ghost is responsible. The first tragedy occurred in 1842, when a young man named Aaron Klein came to Gold Hill to work in the local mines. He soon won the affection of one Elizabeth Moyle, and together they planned to be married that Christmas. Unfortunately for Aaron, Elizabeth had been courted by Big Stan Cukla before Aaron showed up, and Big Stan wasn't happy with the way things had turned out. One night, Stan mortally wounded a puppy Aaron had been keeping, and left the pup whimpering near the mine shaft. When Aaron went looking for his dog, he heard the cries, but about the time he found the puppy with its skull crushed, Big Stan lunged at him from the darkness, pushing him down the mine shaft. Aaron's body was never found, although everybody knew Cukla was responsible. Soon afterward, however, a strange light began appearing at the mine, following people around and, according to some, making whimpering noises like a wounded puppy. Cukla never got the chance to pick up again with Elizabeth, as he was found dead at the bottom of a mineshaft a few months later, and many in town believed Aaron's ghost put him there.
Then in the early 1900's, as the mine continued to produce, two brothers named Walter and Joe Newman bought the property. Walter was well known to be a greedy man, so when his brother Joe was killed in an unexplained explosion at home in 1918, people assumed that Walter had killed his brother, but no one was ever able to find any evidence of foul play. Thus Walter succeeded in taking over full control of the mine, but soon his workers began seeing eerie lights and hearing strange noises in the mine shafts. Eventually, the miners refused to work at the site, and so Walter was never able to realize the full potential of the mine. The locals said the noises were Walter's brother Joe, making sure that Walter's crime did not go unpunished.
My husband and I recendtly visited Gold Hill, NC for the 2008 ghost tour. We took several pictures and caught some images and orbs in a few of them the strangest one was and image in the powder house doorway. The powder house was were they stored the dynamite in the 1800's.

Rock Hill South Carolina High School Is Vandalized With Racist KKK Slurs! - The LanceScurv Show
- The Racist Slurs spray painted at the South Pointe High School in Rock Hill South Carolina on a huge rock on the property indicate that the sickness and ailment of racism is alive and well in 2015.
It also indicates that the signal has been sounded do a Black people to stop being defined by what these inbred subhumans do.
We as a people cannot ascend into the brilliant beings that we were made to be if we spend our short lifetimes reacting to what a scripturally hell bound set of grafted humanoids do.
For is to march and rant on every time that something is done to insult the Black community, that is so much more of our precious energy wasted that could have been used to elevate ourselves.
Now please don't get me wrong here, I'm not suggesting that we allow these people to walk all over us, kill us or deny our rights and citizens under the law in this country.
By all means collectively resist, fight and steam roll anything that attempts to get in your way in your receiving your having life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
But for any transgression below that where have a fool who spray paints racist Slurs on a High School rock and hides their face from the deed, it doesn't make any sense to get upset when you have been schooled for hundreds of years on what their sickness is and how they feel about us.
Use your precious energy to build your community, develop your financial infrastructure, improve your educational facilities, gain more advanced and efficient healthcare, intensify your relationship with God....
.......I can go on and on indefinitely on what it is that we have to do as a great people who have endured the worst treatment of anyone in history, and this shows that it's time to roll up our sleeves to create our Heaven on earth as do so many others!
I hope that you received some motivation from my expressions and please feel free to share your opinions and perspectives on what I shared here on this topic.

Black Slave Owner and Breeder in South Carolina ~ The Interesting Story of William Ellison
....William Ellison was one of the wealthiest men in the South as well as being a black, former slave. He owned cotton gins, plantations, and 68 slaves. And from accounts of the time, he wasn't very nice...At the peak of slavery in the United States, large numbers of free Negroes owned black slaves; in fact, in numbers disproportionate to their representation in society at large. In 1860 only a small minority of whites owned slaves. According to the U.S. census report for that last year before the Civil War, there were nearly 27 million whites in the country. Some 8 million of them lived in the slaveholding states. The census also determined that there were fewer than 385,000 individuals who owned slaves. Even if all slaveholders had been white, that would amount to only 1.4 percent of whites in the country (or 4.8 % of southern whites owning one or more slaves, however, around 30% for free blacks owned slaves).
In the rare instances when the ownership of slaves by free Negroes is acknowledged in the history books, justification centers on the claim that black slave masters were simply individuals who purchased the freedom of a spouse or child from a white slaveholder and had been unable to legally manumit them. Although this did indeed happen at times, it is a misrepresentation of the majority of instances, one which is debunked by records of the period on blacks who owned slaves. These include individuals such as Justus Angel and Mistress L. Horry, of Colleton District, South Carolina, who each owned 84 slaves in 1830. In fact, in 1830 a fourth of the free Negro slave masters in South Carolina owned 10 or more slaves; eight owning 30 or more.

The Execution of George Stinney
George Junius Stinney Jr. (October 21, 1929 – June 16, 1944) was an African-American youth who at a flawed trial was convicted at age 14 of murder in 1944 in his home town of Alcolu, South Carolina. He was the youngest person in the United States in the 20th-century to be sentenced to death and to be executed.[1]
Stinney was convicted in 1944 in a one-day trial[2] of the first-degree murder of two white girls: 11-year-old Betty June Binnicker and 8-year-old Mary Emma Thames. After being arrested, Stinney was said to have confessed to the crime.[3][4] There was no written record of his confession apart from notes provided by an investigating deputy,[5] and no transcript of the brief trial. He was executed by electric chair.
Since Stinney's conviction and execution, the question of his guilt, the validity of his reported confession, and the judicial process leading to his execution have been extensively criticized.[6]
A group of lawyers and activists investigated the Stinney case on behalf of his family. In 2013 the family petitioned for a new trial. On December 17, 2014, his conviction was posthumously vacated 70 years after his execution, because the circuit court judge ruled that he had not been given a fair trial; he had no effective defense and his Sixth Amendment rights had been violated.[7][8] The judgment noted that while Stinney may in fact have committed the crime, the prosecution and trial were fundamentally flawed.

Friendship 9 Member Discusses the Civil Rights Movement
The Friendship 9 consisted of students from Friendship Junior College. These students are best known for their historic one-mile walk from Friendship Junior College to McCrory’s Variety Store on January 31st, 1961. They walked into the front door of McCrory’s expecting adversity and as they sat at the segregated lunch counter, they received just that. They were arrested moments later.
The Friendship 9 may not have been the first Civil Rights protestors in South Carolina, but what makes their protest unique is the movement it created: Jail, No Bail. “Jail, No Bail” requires protestors to be arrested and then refuse to pay or accept bail under any circumstances. The Friendship 9 chose to serve full sentences. Learning by their example, many protestors throughout the south began to replicate their efforts by participating in the “Jail, No Bail” movement themselves.
The Friendship 9’s significant role in the Civil Rights movement in Rock Hill, South Carolina was not recognized until the late 1900’s. In 1997, McCrory’s closed down. This created a concern that the lunch counter, and a part of history, might be lost. Being that is was also the turn of the century, The Culture and Heritage Museum Board of Rock Hill was trying to decide what the biggest thing that happened in the previous century was. After several interviews and hours and days of research, they came to the conclusion that the most significant thing that happened in York County and Rock Hill was the Friendship 9 and the beginning of the Civil Rights Era in South Carolina. In 2007, historical markers were placed on Main Street in Rock Hill that explained who The Friendship 9 was. In 2016, The Freedom Walkway was completed. The Freedom Walkway is a mural in downtown Rock Hill that has been dedicated to the Friendship 9 and other local heroes. Among The Friendship 9 is Rock Hill native David Williamson Jr.

Freedom Walkway Honors South Carolina Civil Rights Heroes
In 1961, African American students from Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill, South Carolina, walked a mile to stage a sit-in at a segregated lunch counter. Their unconventional mission was to be put in jail and refuse to pay or accept bail to place a financial burden on local authorities. Their protest was known as “Jail, No Bail” and was replicated many times throughout the south. Until Recently, the Friendship 9 was not recognized for their important role in the Civil Rights Movement in South Carolina and the nation.
