On Location: Obo Addy, Master Drummer (by Open Meadow Middle School, Portland, OR)
Who brings Ghanaian culture to the life in Portland, Oregon? West African drummer Obo Addy; that’s who! Mr. Addy is an acclaimed master drummer and composer from Ghana. Mr. Addy brings his musical medicine to the United States with his drumming and dance group Homowo African Arts and Culture. He is committed to sharing his art and culture with young male and female students who might otherwise never get to experience West Africa.
Obo Addy, one of the originators of the seminal musical movement known as World beat, is a prominent member of the first generation of African musicians to bring their traditional and popular music to Europe and America. An original and respected composer whose music reaches far beyond the boundaries of his land of birth, Addy has a twenty-year presence on the international performing arts scene and has become known for his ability to celebrate past traditions while expanding to embrace new ideas and foreign influences through his music and community outreach work as director of Homowo African Arts and Cultures.
Homowo’s style of music and dance, known as Okropong, comes from Africa’s Ghanaian people. Drumming is passed down from generation to generation in traditional societies. As the group’s master drummer, Obo sets the speed (tempo) of the music. He leads the other musicians and dancers by playing polyrhythms, or many rhythms at once, and pitches for the performers to understand. Each musician plays a single rhythm to form a polyrhythmic whole. On top of this collection of polyrhythms the master drummer improvises additional rhythms to create original compositions for all to share!
Located in the northwestern corner of the United States, Portland, Oregon is a big city with a small town feel. One of the best things about our city is that it still has a lot of different neighborhoods with different feels. One of those areas is North Portland. The northern part of our city has a lot of different people from a lot of different places. Mr. Addy, our artist, has been working with students in our community for over 12 years.
From 2008-2010, nineteen schools from across the United States created videos as part of the On Location program. A media studio on wheels visited each school for two weeks and provided students the gear and training to tell the story of the arts in their community.
From go-go music in Washington DC, to gullah woodburning in Beaufort, South Carolina, to modern dance in Berkley, Michigan, the arts of a community can be as different as it's geography.
The Kennedy Center traveled the country to help students tell the story of the arts in their community, and the result is a video collection reflecting a rich diversity of local artists and art forms across the United States.
The videos in this series were scripted, produced and edited by students using professional equipment, under the supervision of Kennedy Center teaching artists.
SUMMIT TO BASE Hoodoo Ski Area, Oregon Cascades Family Skiing
Hoodoo Ski Area sits at the top of the Santiam Pass in Oregon, just off of Hwy 20. It's almost right in the middle of the State (north to south) in the Cascade mountain range. It's not a huge mountain, but the lodge is wonderful and the staff are friendly. It has a lot of terrain that is beginner and intermediate friendly as well as some more challenging terrain. It's a great place to take your kids to learn how to ski or snowboard. The video portion of this was filmed on the last run of our family trip in early March, 2018. The views from the summit are spectacular when the weather is clear.

KNOWLEDGE OF US - The Best Winter Vacation Destinations in Oregon USA
The Best Winter Vacation Destinations in Oregon (USA)
From lush forests to snowy mountains to temperate Portland, Oregon has much to offer, even in the wet and chilly months of winter. If you love to ski, you’ve come to the right place, but skiing isn’t the only way to enjoy the Beaver State. Cozy up at a mountain lodge, enjoy seafood on the coast or explore Oregon’s top cities. Expect to travel with some coats, rain gear or at least a sturdy determinedness to get a little soggy and you’re all set to go.

The Best Winter Vacation Destinations in Oregon (USA)
1. Bend.
A frigid winter dawn near Pine Mountain east of Bend, Oregon, in the area known as 'The Badlands.'
Bend is one of Oregon’s most solid destinations in both summer and winter. The area in and around Bend is a veritable winter wonderland. Located in a high desert and surrounded by mountains, you’ll find plenty of snow—up to 30 feet per year in the mountains, but less than 30 inches in town. If a ski vacation is what you seek, then Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort is nearby. There’s also ample opportunity to go snowshoeing, rent snowmobiles or even take a dog sled ride!
2. Sunriver Resort.
The lure of Hollywood, international celebrities, and the mild breezes from the Pacific Ocean makes Los Angeles an obvious addition to the list of top U.S. tourist destinations. Visit L.A.'s famous beaches, such as Malibu or Santa Monica, go shopping on Rodeo Drive, try touring Beverly Hills, and walk along the boardwalk in LA's most famous beachfront neighborhood known as Venice Beach.
3. Mt. Hood and Timberline Lodge
If you’re in the mood for a winter vacation, snow and all, Mt. Hood is one of Oregon’s top spots to find it. Book a room at the cozy Timberline Lodge because there’s no finer way to enjoy a snowy vacation than to pair it with a lodge where you can curl up by a fireplace in your room in the evenings. Mt. Hood is home to not one, but five different ski resorts, including Mt. Hood Meadows, Timberline, Skibowl and Cooper Spur Mountain Resort. Beyond the resorts, there are even more snowy trail systems to snowshoe or cross-country ski, as well as tubing hills to sled or tube down a slope. You want snow, you can’t go wrong at Mt. Hood.
4. Portland.
Portland’s weather stays fairly temperate all year round. So, yes, it does get a little rainy in the winter, but so long as you’ve got the right gear, there’s no reason why Portland isn’t a great winter vacation destination. While exploring the city’s amazing parks (Forest Park and Washington Park, we're looking at you) may or may not be as enjoyable depending on the weather, the city’s amazing dining scene is just as amazing whether it’s raining or not.
5. The Oregon Coast
Winter is not the best time of year to visit the Oregon Coast. Whether you’re looking at Astoria or Cannon Beach or Gold Beach, count on likely a rain and wind filled vacation. Skip heading to the coast for walks on the beach unless you really enjoy sideways rain (and that’s not to say there aren’t lovely days on the coast in January and February, but statistically you’re more likely to get wind whipped).
6. Hood River in the Columbia Gorge
In the summer, Hood River is known as the windsurfing capital of the world. With its incredible winds whipping through the Columbia Gorge, windsurfing and kite surfing are big here. And while those activities mostly lose their appeal when the temperatures drop, Hood River still has plenty of chilly appeal. Like Timberline Lodge, Hood River makes a strong base for ski vacations as Mt. Hood Meadows and Cooper Spur are just an hour away. And, yes, you can still go windsurfing if you want to in the winter... nothing stops Northwesterners from enjoying the outdoors. Just be ready to suit up to stay warm!
7. The Willamette Valley
While you might think of visiting Oregon’s wine country as a summer activity, it’s not like wine stops just because the clouds come out. In fact, warming up with a glass of wine might be just what the doctor ordered when the winter blues have you down.
Boutique hotels and bed and breakfasts dot the Willamette Valley and turn your winter vacation into a cozy get away. Look to the Black Walnut Inn if you want to combine beautiful views, top-notch culinary offerings and a vineyard on the property. Rooms come with a complimentary bottle of wine to get you started.

Mt. Hood - three ski resorts on one mountain
As Oregon’s grandest peak, Mt. Hood is home to three incredible and diverse ski resorts. Timberline Lodge & Ski Area is the only ski-in, ski-out lodge in the state, Mt. Hood Meadows offers more than 2,150 acres of skiing and Mt. Hood Skibowl has the largest night skiing terrain in the United States. Conveniently located 90 minutes from Portland International Airport, on Mt. Hood you can ski with locals, enjoy a beer at a craft brewery, spend the night in a mountain resort, follow snowshoe trails through old growth forests and experience what makes Oregon a truly special place.

EXPLORING THE ISLAND - Portland, Maine
Check Out Jacob Vlog #266 - SUBSCRIBE FOR NEW VIDEOS THREE TIMES A WEEK!
Today I spend the morning exploring Long Island, Maine, just of the coast from Portland in Casco Bay. After that, I take the ferry back to Portland and venture to a tiny lighthouse called, Bug Light, that is actually on the Portland City Seal. I then get some delicious lunch at a very popular restaurant called Duck Fat. They are famous for their fries that they fry in, you guessed it, duck fat. I then head north to Maine Beer Co. to grab a tshirt for a friend and then explore the MASSIVE L.L. Bean campus. It's comprised of 4 huge stores that are all open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. After getting lost among the gigantic selection of outdoor goods, I head back to Portland to have dinner and a drink at a local brewpub called Sebago.
