Fred Armisen really, really loves the Portland Streetcar
Fred Armisen, of Portlandia and Saturday Night Live, really really loves the Portland Streetcar. It makes him feel like he's in another country.
All week we're celebrating Portland's award-winning transportation network in honor of the opening of Tilikum Crossing: Bridge of the People - the largest car-free bridge in the United States. As the latest addition to our cityscape here in Bridgetown, Tilikum Crossing will carry the Portland Streetcar, the MAX Orange Line, TriMet busses and cyclists and pedestrians.

Downtown Character - Portland, Oregon
With almost 600,000 people, Portland, Oregon is a fairly big city, but its downtown feels smaller and is quite walkable. And walking around Portland is the best way to see it. There are a lot of small touches that give downtown Portland a lot of character, from pocket parks to plentiful street art to a handful of quirks, a sampling of which are shown here.
The Photos (in order)
P11A0001 - Portland is the Rose City and is home to an annual Rose Festival
P11A0022 - Salmon Street Springs Fountain
P11A0025 - At 452 square inches (just over 3 square feet), Mill Ends Park is the smallest park in the world; the city's 5000-acre Forest Park is one of the world's largest urban forested parks
P11A0035 - Raymond Kaskey's Portlandia sculpture, at 34 feet 10 inches, is one of the largest copper repousse statues in the United States, second only to the Statue of Liberty
P11A0047 - As a sign of the Heathman Hotel's dog-friendly policies, a small sculpture of Zelda is located in front of the hotel; Zelda's dog bowl is kept filled with water for passing dogs
P11A0059 - There is a lot of public art around downtown Portland; because I already covered dogs, I figured I'd include Kathleen McCullough's Cat in Repose sculpture for any cat lovers viewing this
P04A0074 - And for you elephant lovers, here is a sculpture of a pair of elephants found in the North Park Blocks
P05A0022 - Union Station, towards the north end of downtown Portland

How Bikes Make Cities Cool - Portland
Fresh from the Kona Productions Crew, How Bikes Make Cities Cool – Portland, is a five-minute mini documentary that explores the thriving bicycle culture resident to one of North America’s most progressive metropolises. Filmed entirely by bike, with support from longtime Kona Portland dealer Sellwood Cycles and resident Team Kona athletes Erik Tonkin and Matthew Slaven, we spent the better part of a week talking to commuters, following kids to school and capturing the friendly vibe and funky nature of a city that embraces self-propelled commuting at the heart of its identity.
Inside Voodoo Doughnut, portland, oregon
Voodoo Doughnut is an independent doughnut shop based in Portland, Oregon, U.S.A. The original location, opened in 2003, is at 22 SW 3rd Avenue, just south of the Burnside Bridge, around the corner from Dan and Louis Oyster Bar, and next door to The Paris Theater, a historic adult movie house. Voodoo Doughnut is known for its unusual doughnuts, the eclectic decor of its shops and its iconic pink boxes which feature the company's logo and drawings of voodoo priests. There are two other locations, one at 1501 NE Davis Street in Portland that opened in June 2008, and one in Eugene, Oregon that opened officially in June 2010. The flagship shop closed in April 2011 for an extensive remodeling, which utilized part of Berbati's Pan, the now-closed night club next door. It expanded from 750 square feet (70 m2) to 2,300 sq ft (210 m2) and reopened in June 2011.
In addition to doughnuts, Voodoo Doughnut offers legal wedding services, complete with doughnuts and coffee for the reception.
Portland is a city located in the U.S. state of Oregon, near the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers. As of the 2010 Census, it had a population of 583,776, estimated to have reached 587,865 in 2012 making it the 28th most populous city in the United States. Portland is Oregon's most populous city, and the third most populous city in the Pacific Northwest region, after Seattle, Washington, and Vancouver, British Columbia. Approximately 2,289,800 people live in the Portland metropolitan area (MSA), the 19th most populous MSA in the United States.
Portland was incorporated in 1851 near the end of the Oregon Trail and is the county seat of Multnomah County. The city has a commission-based government headed by a mayor and four other commissioners as well as Metro, a distinctive regional government. The city is noted for its superior land-use planning and investment in light rail.Because of its public transportation networks and efficient land-use planning, Portland has been referred to as one of the most environmentally friendly, or green, cities in the world.
Located in the Marine west coast climate region, Portland has a climate marked by both warm, dry summers and wet, cool-to-chilly winter days. This climate is ideal for growing roses. For more than a century, Portland has been known as the City of Roses, with many rose gardens -- most prominently the International Rose Test Garden. The city is also known for its abundant outdoor activities, liberal political values, and beer and coffee enthusiasm. Portland is home to a collection of independent microbreweries, microdistilleries and food carts that contribute to the unofficial but widely utilized[citation needed] slogan Keep Portland Weird.
