Grant's Getaways: Winter Bird Watching in Oregon
Winter in Oregon is the perfect time for bird watching. Flocks of Tundra Swans seem to fill the sky on six-foot-wingspans and then glide in for a well-deserved break.
The swans can be seen across the state at the following places:
Sauvie Island Wildlife Area. The 12,000 acre state refuge can be a fine place to admire waterfowl from a distance.
Fernhill Wetlands in Washington County is a prime hideout to catch a view to tundra swans.
Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge in Polk County where the visitor access is easy just off State Highway 22, west of Salem.
Further afield, try the Klamath Wildlife Area in southern Oregon where they swan show is reliable all winter long until the big birds head back to the arctic in March.

Rubber To The Road /Sauvie Island
The heart of this ride is a flat 12-mile lap around Sauvie Island, home to farm fields and wildlife preserves, and you’ll discover incredible views throughout. It’s a straight shot out of town along Highway 30 to get to the island and back making this an ideal road ride for training or just riding fast with friends.
Our Rubber to the Road film series is a collection of favorite bicycle rides in and around the Portland, Oregon metro region. Rubber to the Road began as a series of printed Portland ride guidebooks. Volume I was compiled and written by Peter Marsh in 1997, and Volume II by Otis Rubottom in 2003. Both were produced by Dave Guettler, founder and owner of River City Bicycles, with proceeds donated to the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, now The Street Trust, and the Community Cycling Center. In 2010 we compiled both volumes into rubbertotheroad.com. For the summer of 2017 we are adding short films for many of our favorites to give some insight into the sights and sounds of these routes along with tips on bikes, equipment, and getting there.

Barred Owl at Tryon Creek State Natural Area, Portland, Oregon
I love owls. This bird was a joy to watch. Majestic. Tryon Creek is located in SE Portland. I found the owl in the early evening. The bird must have been waking up and starting it's day(or night). There was plenty of foot traffic in the area and even a horse came by. Everyone knew about the Barred Owls in the area and gave me tips on where to look.
