The Portland Saturday Market is an outdoor arts and crafts market in Portland, Oregon. It is the largest continuously operated outdoor market in the United States. It is held every Saturday and Sunday from the beginning of March through December 24, in Tom McCall Waterfront Park underneath Burnside Bridge and south of the bridge, as well as within an adjacent plaza just across Naito Parkway, extending west to the Skidmore Fountain.[3] The market's hours of operations are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m on Sundays, and admission is free.[2] The market is accessible by foot, bicycle, Segway, and TriMet's MAX Light Rail line which stops near the market at the Skidmore Fountain stop. The market has over 400 members and generates an estimated $12 million in gross sales annually. It has become a central economic engine for the historic Old Town Chinatown neighborhood, and attracts an estimated 750,000 visitors to this area each year.

The Skidmore Fountain is a historic fountain in Portland, Oregon, United States. Erected in 1888, the fountain was intended to provide refreshment for horses, men, and dogs, and it did that for many years. Today, however, the bronze and granite fountain is primarily decorative. It was dedicated September 22, 1888 in memory of Stephen G. Skidmore and partly financed by his will. Designed and built by sculptor Olin Warner for $18,000, all of which was donated. It is styled after fountains Skidmore viewed on his visit to the 1878 Paris Exposition and intended for horses, men and dogs to drink from Henry Weinhard offered to pump beer into the fountain at the dedication. The fountain is located near the west end of the Burnside Bridge at SW First and Pine streets within downtown Portland. The MAX Light Rail line runs past it and has a nearby stop named after the fountain.
Every Saturday and Sunday from March through Christmas Eve the Old Town/Chinatown neighborhood transforms into a thriving arts and crafts open-air marketplace. Seeing the Market’s staff delegate booth spaces with precision each weekend for so many years, most of the neighborhood has come to think of Portland Saturday Market (PSM) as a business like any other. But it certainly was not always that way, and some surprising elements still lie at the core of this unusual non-profit operation.
Portland Saturday Market was the brainchild of two women, Sheri Teasdale and Andrea Scharf. Both were artists living in the area who had sold at the Saturday Market in Eugene; their idea was to create a similar style of market in downtown Portland. Beginning in December 1973, the two visited everyone they could think of in the city to sell their idea: an open-air market of all handmade food and craft items. It would be a win-win situation they insisted. Artists would have an economic outlet for their work, customers would gain better access to locally produced items, and the city would have a new attraction to draw customers into the downtown area.

More of the Postapocalyptic Business Model - Food vendors in Portland Oregon
Food vendors at the growing Cartlandia food court which is located along Portland Oregon's main bike commuter path where it intersects 82nd Avenue in Southeast Portland, showing low cost independent business models which are magnets for recent immigrants and other types of people who will not fit into mass produced corporate culture. This business model is wildly popular in Oregon and the main reason why normal corporate fast food joints don't open up here although some classics like Arbys and Dairy Queen remain business along with established mainstays like McDonald's and Burger King, which are not opening new standalone restaurants in this city.
Powering the Future: Where Will Energy Come From?
Presented on March 26, 2010
Angus Duncan, president and founder, Bonneville Environmental Foundation; Rachel Shimshak, executive director, Renewable Northwest Project; Bob Jenks, executive director, Citizens Utility Board of Oregon; Moderated by Oregonian journalist Scott Learn
Some claim that the United States is already fully equipped to power itself through alternative energies such as personal solar panels and rooftop wind. The only thing preventing this, they argue, is the political and financial power of “big utilities.” Others contend that alternative energies are expensive, intermittent and not as “green” as their proponents claim, and moreover, that the current technologies are insufficient to generate the necessary amount of power. But who is right?
On March 26, City Club takes this question to the experts, who will attempt to answer this question in concrete terms. They will also explain where most of our energy is likely to come from by 2025; how the typical family’s electric bill will compare to today’s; what conservation steps our country will need to take if it wants to reduce energy consumption; and which technological breakthroughs will be necessary to increase reliance on “green” power.
City Club welcomes journalist Scott Learn from The Oregonian, who will interview Angus Duncan, president and founder, Bonneville Environmental Foundation, Rachel Shimshak, executive director, Renewable Northwest Project and Bob Jenks, executive director, Citizens Utility Board of Oregon.
Please note: The audio file begins a few minutes into the introduction, however the main discussion is there in its entirety.

The Politics of Immigration, Labor and Food
Presented on January 29, 2010
Paul Apostolidis, Judge and Mrs. Timothy A. Paul Chair of Political Science, Whitman College
Mexican immigrants have endured both physical and emotional trauma to cross the border into the United States, only to find themselves working in some of America’s most dangerous industries, like meatpacking.
On January 29, Paul Apostolidis will examine American immigration reform through the stories of immigrant meatpackers. He will explain how these immigrants protected themselves during hazardous factory work, how they democratized their union, and how, in partnership with local consumers concerned about food safety, they made the slaughterhouse safer for workers and consumers alike.
Apostolidis will argue that immigration reform should not only give immigrants new rights to reside here, but should also recognize the unique abilities of immigrants to strengthen American democracy and develop creative solutions to social problems that intertwine the fates of all.
Paul Apostolidis holds the Judge & Mrs. Timothy A. Paul Chair of Political Science at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. He is the author of Breaks in the Chain: What Immigrant Workers Can Teach Americans about Democracy.
