Tanween 2019: Meet the Designer - Abdalla Almulla
Abdalla Al Mulla is an Emirati architect and Founder of MULA design studio. In 2014, he received a Bachelor of Architecture from Woodbury University, San Diego, USA and was awarded the Grand Critique Faculty Choice Award and the Best Degree Project Award in architectural design graduation research based on geometric explorations.
Abdalla’s creative practice is driven by energy, which is constantly in flux. By venturing into the unknown, he creates new ideas and develops them to advance design. He uses methodologies that are a sequence of theoretical and visual design explorations within a focused subject and uses patterns and geometry as regulators to set guidelines. Abdalla simultaneously studies each subject’s attributes and develops them through a preliminary study of concepts, prototyping and digital technology. He uses the method of prototyping to learn and repeat. In doing so, a creative value is added to allow his creative practice to constantly evolve and provide his clients with unique designs.
Abdalla Almulla was one of three participants in the Tanween Design Programme 2019. He produced a timepiece called Traces of Time.

Tag Team Process at Tashkeel
Amartey:
On one of Lateefa bint Maktoum ( daily rounds at Tashkeel, the idea sprung to mind to do a collaboration together. I would be interested to see how a psychologist would interpret this, although we would probably see men In white jackets approaching pretty hastily afterwards.
What I love about this relaxed process is the anticipation to see what comes from the meeting of the minds. People say that the one of the reasons why people love a piece of art is if they can feel as though they couldn't do it, And the thing I love about making a piece with someone else is that even though you where part of the process, you could never have produced the finished piece alone. And that allows you to really be in awe of the piece of art you create.
Lateefa:
It was one of those mad moments that something comes out of a simple conversation. Amartey and I started to draw Kitty (My cousins hairless sphinx cat who I was babysitting for a while; she visited us in the studios at Tashkeel one day and we photographed her) After that, not much conversation happened between Amartey and I except through charcoal on canvas, where a lot of the unexpected illustrations appeared.
I see a beginning of a journey-taking place through Amartey's work with other artists where this kind of tag team collaboration happens.

Dubai (in Arabic: دبيّ, Dubayy) is one of the seven emirates and the most populous state of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is located along the southern coast of the Persian Gulf on the Arabian Peninsula. The Dubai Municipality is sometimes called Dubai state to distinguish it from the emirate. It is not a city.
Written accounts document the existence of the city for at least 150 years prior to the formation of the UAE. legal, political, military and economic functions with the other emirates within a federal framework, although each emirate has jurisdiction over some functions such as civic law enforcement and provision and upkeep of local facilities. Dubai has the largest population and is the second largest emirate by area, after Abu Dhabi.[5] Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the only two emirates to possess veto power over critical matters of national importance in the country's legislature.[6] Dubai has been ruled by the Al Maktoum dynasty since 1833. Dubai's current ruler, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is also the Prime Minister and Vice President of the UAE.
The emirate's main revenues are from tourism, real estate and financial services.[7] Although Dubai's economy was originally built on the back of the oil industry,[8] revenues from petroleum and natural gas currently contribute less than 6% (2006)[9] of the emirate's US$ 37 billion economy (2005).[10] Real estate and construction, on the other hand, contributed 22.6% to the economy in 2005, before the current large-scale construction boom.[11] Dubai has attracted attention through its real estate projects [12] and sports events. This increased attention, coinciding with its emergence as a Global City[13] and business hub, has highlighted labour and human rights issues concerning its largely South Asian workforce.[14]
