Wye Fire - River Wye Trekking - Ross On Wye to Monmouth

Wye Fire is a hike along a stretch of the River Wye that borders Herefordshire, Monmouthshire and the Forest of Dean.

It was a reasonably short distance of about 20/24 miles along the meanderings of the route. Taking us out of Ross On Wye, through Walford, Symonds Yat, the Biblins Camp and Monmouth this famous stretch was a veritable surprise. We had never been drawn to walk it because of its fame. Moreover we walked it on this occasion because it called us to do so.

The forest and or woods were amazing. Their origins go back to the last ice age and according to the Forestry Commission one part has been left as an experiment. It's line is long and it feels like some kind of Temperate rain forest. The Flora and fauna is extensive and it's so lush. You got to immerse yourself in it as we did.

As for the river - well - it was simply majestic. As apposed to the Hereford end it was reasonably wide here. That can be put down, in part, to the many more tributaries that feed it. The Lugg just outside of Hereford being one.

Back in Monmouth post walking through the Wyastone Leys estate and observing a buzzard closely on an old stone cottage we could clearly see a thriving market town and Centre for education. It was chocka block with people. We commented that living here would not be a chore. All in all a great hike along the Wye that fed the fire within.
