VIDEO: Visit Madrid, New Mexico on the Turquoise Trail with me
The National Scenic Byway, Turquoise Trail, is a 70-mile mountain back road connecting Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Dotted by ghost towns being restored by writers, artists and other urban refugees, turquoise, gold, silver, tin, lead and coal have been mined here. The ex-coal-mining town of Madrid is quaint with weathered houses and old company stores being repaired and turned into boutiques and galleries. The movie Wild Hogs was filmed here and the Mineshaft Tavern is a great place to eat.
