HONG KONG: ASTROLOGER FORECASTS THAT SHARE CRISIS IS ALMOST OVER
Cant/Eng/Nat
Hong Kong's economic fortunes have been fluctuating wildly throughout the last week.
The effects of the financial instability have already had a knock on effect in the retail sector, with some businesses fearing a disastrous drop in sales.
However, one famed local astrologer says the crisis is almost over.
The economic downturn in China's newest territory has already affected the property market, now consumers are reacting as well.
Food, clothing and other necessities are unlikely to see a fall in sales.
But luxury items will be affected, and some store owners are predicting disaster.
At the Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Company business appeared brisk this week.
But the store's manager says that looks can be deceiving.
Browsers are stopping by, but regular customers are holding off until their financial future is clearer.
SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese)
I think there will be about a 60 to 70 per cent drop in sales in the coming three months. Yes, a 60 to 70 per cent decrease. Sales for luxury goods will drop. We will need to see how the economy performs. If it becomes better, then there's hope for recovery. But gold sales will be quite substantial in the coming six months.
SUPER CAPTION: Peter Suen, Chow Tai Fook Jewellery
While stocks plunge and expensive goods become less affordable, there is one luxury item that will sell.
Gold is being sold quickly around Asia to make up for the currency and stock losses, driving its price down.
And the fall in the price of gold couldn't come at a better time in Chinese parts of Asia, as the wedding season runs from November to February.
SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese)
Gold sales, though, have seen a different effect, especially as we enter the busy season for Chinese weddings. And also gold has plunged, we think there will be a 60 to 70 per cent increase in gold sales.
SUPER CAPTION: Peter Suen, Chow Tai Fook Jewellery
The market's unpredictability has obviously made consumers and businessmen nervous.
In a Chinese society this will often lead them to consult someone who has insight into the future.
But that person is not necessarily a stock broker, it's just as likely to be an astrologer, like Yeung Ki Yue.
Yeung has consulted his charts and has a prediction for the exact day the economic tumble will end.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Before November 7th, we are still in the bad cycle, so after November 7th the energy becomes a little better. So the worst month has passed.
SUPER CAPTION: Yeung Ki Yue, Astrologer
Yeung explains the origin of the problems with numbers and combinations of elements.
Hong Kong has not been helped by the appointment of Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa, whose element is wood, he claims.
Wood helps create fire which weakens metal, and the economy is metal.
Yeung uses this system to show why Asia has been hit harder than the U-S.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, their elements, belong to wood and fire. So when the wood and fire are more strong, the metal becomes more weak. But in the U-S because the metal is still strong, though the element of the year of the month is not good to the date, when the effect happened, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia were more seriously (affected).
SUPER CAPTION: Yeung Ki Yue, Astrologer
The people of Hong Kong will be hoping Yeung's predictions prove to be right in the coming weeks.

STORYLINE
JADEN SMITH AND HIS CLOTHES
Jaden Smith took some time out of his busy schedule to promote After Earth in Taipei Taiwan to plug his own clothing line.
On Sunday May 5th, the 14 year old singer/actor and the founder of MSFTS clothing line, attended a publicity event to promote the collaboration with another celebrity clothing line, SMG, founded by singer JJ Lin.
MSFTS and SMG are launching new limited products to be sold in SMG shops in Asia. Over a hundred overzealous fans were at the publicity event. Jaden Smith charmed the crowd by giving an impromptu rap performance there.
Speaking of his partner, Smith said that he's only heard of Lin but never got a chance to meet him before the collaboration. When asked if there's any chance for the two to collaboration musically, Smith replied that if an opportunity ever presents itself, he would welcome it.
Smith founded MSFTS in 2010 as a casual clothing line, targeting young consumers with designs mostly in black and white.
Although Smith is only 14, partner JJ Lin sees a lot of quality that other youngsters should learn from.
Lin said, (Smith) maybe young, but he has a lot of ideas of his own, and a dream. I think a lot of young people should learn from him, which is to be yourself, and be confident to accomplish whatever is it that you want to achieve
This is the first time for MSFTS to collaborate with an Asian clothing brand, and Smith promises that he will return to Asia more often to check on the business.
After making an appearance for SMGXMSFTS, Jaden Smith heads to Seoul, South Korea, with father and co-star Will Smith to promote new film After Earth.

全港最大規模抵制象牙貿易和平示威 / Hong Kong Kids' Ivory Protest

Hong Kong Sees City's Largest Peaceful Protest Against Ivory Trade
HONG KONG (14 March 2015) — An army of about 100 school children and their parents, teachers and friends from three Hong Kong schools converged Saturday on city's ivory trade stronghold of Hollywood Road to peacefully protest the rampant trade in elephant ivory.
The young activists, ages 10 to 12, held placards and shouted slogans as they called for members of the public to stop buying elephant ivory and for the Hong Kong government to ban the city's ivory trade.
WildAid supports the actions of these elephant advocates who attend ESF Clearwater Bay School, ESF Kennedy School and Canadian International School.
According to Save the Elephants, 100,000 African elephants were illegally killed for their ivory tusks between 2010 and 2012 — a crisis fueled in large part by demand from Hong Kong and China.
The courageous primary school children filed past several antique shops on Hollywood Road, none of which were displaying valid licenses for their ivory stocks. The demonstrators were joined by Greenpeace volunteers, a contingent from the city's anti-fur and pro-animal welfare lobby, and by concerned members of the public.
The peaceful protest also filed past several shops selling ivory on Queen's Road Central as well as two small-scale ivory carving factories.
Saturday’s anti-ivory trade protest was the largest to date in Hong Kong and the fifth in a series of youth-led protests, all of which have seen positive citizen action result in tangible change.
In 2014, four major retailers denounced the selling of elephant ivory products after protests outside their stores forced them to consider their support for the “blood ivory” trade: Last year, Chinese Arts & Crafts, Wing On Department Store, Yue Hwa Chinese Products Emporium and Chinese Good Centre Limited department stores either cited “adjustment of product mix” or “environmental concerns” as their stated reason for suspending elephant ivory sales.
Demonstrating the industry's willingness to adapt to public opinion, these commercial establishments responded positively to the sentiments of the public upon whom they rely for business.
For historical reasons, Hong Kong is a notorious hub for the illegal ivory trade, and suffers from weak government enforcement and lax ivory licensing and controls.
Given that Hong Kong suffers from parallel “legal” and illegal ivory markets, it’s impossible for consumers, the media or NGOs to distinguish illegal ivory from “legal” ivory without using radiocarbon analysis. The only solution to the problem is to ban the trade entirely.

9 Oct 2016 Nine Emperor Gods - The Sending Off
For general knowledge and entertainment.
This sending off of the Nine Emperor Gods event took place on the 9th of the ninth Chinese Lunar Month on the 9th Oct 2016.
Every year, Labuan Ba Xian Miao (八仙廟) plays host to the Nine Emperor Gods (九皇爺 a.k.a. 九皇大帝 Jiǔ huáng dàdì)
Nine Emperor Gods (九皇大帝) Festival is a Taoists festival. During this period, Taoists observe vegetarianism as spiritual cleansing. Devotees practise a strict vegetarian diet to cleanse and purify themselves during the nine days of the festival. This year the festival takes place from the 1st to the 9th October 2016.
It is dedicated to the nine sons of the Great Dipper, a constellation of nine stars, two of which are invisible to the naked eye, of Dou Mu, the Goddess of the North Star who is believed to control the Books of Life and Death. Her sons are said to have the ability to cure illnesses and conferring luck, wealth, and long life to devotees.
It was normal to deify a person or a thing who had done tremendous good to a community in ancient China.
It begins on the eve of the ninth month in the Chinese lunar calendar with the raising of the Jiu Qu Deng (nine wicks oil lamp). This is a way to invite the divinities to the temple. It remains lighted for nine days to signify divine presence.
As a symbolic gesture of welcome, a procession to a nearby river or sea to welcome the Nine Emperor Gods (九皇大帝) is done first at the start of the festival. Both the welcome and send off of the spirits are done via the water.
At present, Ba San Miao八仙廟 (Eight Immortals Shrine) does not have any local Taoist priest.
All the Taoist priests, numbering fifteen, in Labuan for the ceremony were specially invited from Phuket, Thailand. They were to perform the intricate ritual ceremony and at the same time initiate local worshippers into the art.
On the fifth day of the Ninth Lunar Month (5 Oct. 2015) of the festival some men from Phuket had their cheeks punctured with skewers by assistants. Very little blood or scarring from the injury occurred. The men looked like they were doing self-hypnosis before being pierced by spikes. A mind over matter feat. The Taoist devotees believed they were in trance when the perforation occurred.
In the evening, on the same day, they performed a procession commencing from the Labuan Town mosque then proceed pass schools, hotels, government departments, banks, a ferry terminal, shops and a superstore which is right in front of the oldest Kwang Fook Kong 廣福宮 Temple in Labuan Town. Kwang Fook Kong (aka Kwong Fook Kung) 廣福宮 Temple, Labuan, celebrated the opening of its renovated temple building (some said 100 years anniversary) with a carnival ceremony in 1978.

When Park Shin-Hye was in 6th grade at Hak-Kang Elementary School in Gwangju, she was advised to audition for pop singer Lee Seung-Hwan's music company Dream Factory by her English teacher at a private institute. Consequently, Park Shin-Hye went to Seoul and auditioned for Dream Factory. Through her relationship with Dream Factory, Park Shin-Hye began training as an actress, singer, and playing the guitar & keyboard. Her family also relocated to Seoul in 2001.
In 2003 Park Shin-Hye debuted as the main female character in the music video Ggot (Flower) by singer Lee Seung-Hwan. In the same year she also successfully auditioned for a role in the SBS drama series Stairway to Heaven. Park Shin-Hye was picked among 250 contestants. Park Shin-Hye played the role of main character Han Jung-Seo as a child (Choi Ji-Woo played the adult Han Jung-Seo). Stairway to Heaven was highly successful and regularly received ratings in excess of 40%. Park Shin-Hye's entrance to the entertainment industry was now opened.

The series was the most searched for title from SBS on Korean portals in 2009 and the four main actors were always in the top ten name searches for 2009. Park Shin-Hye has stated in interviews that her character in He's Beautiful! reflected her real life personality by about 80%.[2]
In 2010, Park Shin-Hye took on a supporting role in the romantic-comedy Cyrano Agency. In interviews she did to promote Cyrano Agency, Park Shin-Hye stated that with her young age and inexperience in feature films, she didn't feel the need to land a starring role.[3] Park Shin-Hye also stated that peers she admires is actor Park Hie-Sun & actress Ko Du-Shim.[4]
