Anthem of the Seas cruise visiting bar Harbor September 25 2016
Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island in Maine is a tender port - we sailed from Anthem of the Seas into the harbor in small local tender boats. A tour to Acadia Nature Park, covering the majority of the island. We drove from Bar Harbor to the south along the rugged rocky coast and through dense forests to the top of Cadillac Mountain, with a nice view over the island.
Back in Bar Harbor we got a cappuccino at a cafe. Walked through the town and along a path along the water.
In Bar Harbor is a great difference between the tide and at 1 pm was the Island Bar Island mainland with Mount Desert. We walked on a sandbank to the island

Acadia National Park and Frenchman's Harbor Vacation
I took lots of great photos on our trip up to Maine. We stayed at a comfy little cabin on a beautiful plot of land called, Edge Water Cabins. We saw beautiful sunrises and sunsets. We saw a seal swimming in the bay. We say Thunder Hole, Hiked the Gorham Trail, had popovers at the Jordan Pond House, and had lobster for dinner. All in all, it was a pretty perfect Maine vacation. I hope you enjoy.

In Bar Harbor, Maine, when you've overdosed on lobster or you're not a fan of the crustaceans, make a bee line to Mainely Meats.
It's a carefree, fun and delicious place to endulge your carnivorous inclinations. And as a bonus, the restaurant is in the backyard of the Atlantic Brewing Company.

The Sounds of Acadia
Our Daughter loves nature sounds, and we just spent a week in Maine overlooking Cadilac Mountain and Acadia National Park. I figured I would try to get a clip for her to listen to! Water, waves lightly hitting shore, sea birds, insects. There's even a surprise visit from a cruise ship.

Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, at 1,530 feet (466 meters), is the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard and the first place to view sunrise in the United States from October 7 through March 6. It is one of over 20 mountains on Mount Desert Island (MDI), Maine that were pushed up by earth's tectonic and volcanic forces millions of years ago. Were it not for the once enormous glaciers that sheared off their tops, they would be even higher than what we see today. You can easily see the results of this on a smaller scale by viewing the slopes on the Porcupine Islands in the distance. The North side is on the left and the steeper slope, or the down side, is on the right east side. The glaciers crept across the land here from the left to the right (in a southerly direction) and stretched out to sea as far as 400 miles (644 kilometers)!

Cadillac Mountain was named after the French explorer and adventurer, Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, Sieur de Cadillac in 1918. Prior to this, it was known as Green Mountain. From about 1534 through 1763, a substantial part of the North American continent was colonized and under the control of France. Duing this time, it was known as New France and at its peak in 1712, extended all the way from Newfoundland to the Rocky Mountains to the West and the Gulf of Mexico to the South. In 1688, Antoine Laumet de La Mothe Sieur de Cadillac was given ownership of over 100,000 acres of land along the present day Maine coast which included Mount Desert Island and areas next to present day Union River.
The elevation is 1,530 feet (466.34m)

Cadillac Mountain used to be called Green Mountain.
In the late 1800's there was a hotel on the summit called Green Mountain House Hotel.
Huge continental glaciers sheered off the tops of the mountains.
The last glacial period impacting this area ended about 18,000 years ago.

Thunder Hole in Acadia National Park (Bar Harbor, Maine)

Thunder Hole is the place in Acadia National Park to experience the thunder of the sea against the rocky shores of Maine! On calm days you may wonder what the fuss is all about. But wait until the waves kick up a few notches. Thunder Hole is a small inlet, naturally carved out of the rocks, where the waves roll into. At the end of this inlet, down low, is a small cavern where, when the rush of the wave arrives, air and water is forced out like a clap of distant thunder. Water may spout as high as 40 feet with a thunderous roar! Hence the name: Thunder Hole.

Nothing symbolizes the power of Acadia National Park as much as Thunder Hole does.
When the right size wave rolls into the naturally formed inlet, a deep thunderous sound emanates. The cause is a small cavern formed low, just beneath the surface of the water. When the wave pulls back just before lunging forward, it dips the water just below the ceiling of the cavern allowing air to enter. When the wave arrives full force, it collides with the air, forcing it out, resulting in a sound like distant thunder. Water may splash into the air as high as 40 feet with a roar!
This is a beautiful spot to view some of the most striking features within Acadia. Northward is Sand Beach and the Great Head to the right. Southward is the majestic 110 foot high Otter Cliff, one of the highest headlands north of Rio de Janeiro.
Thunder Hole is just past Sand Beach while traveling south on the Park Loop Road. The Island Explorer Shuttle Bus stops here about every half hour during normal seasonal daytime hours.
