Hiking the Bar Island Trail (as it submerges!)
Here’s a novelty! A trail that exists for only 3 hours each day. Before embarking to Bar Island it is imperative that you consult the tide chart. If you don’t it’s a cold swim back to Bridge St!
Bar Island is located just north of downtown Bar Harbor, Maine.

A visit to Bar Island at low tide.
Hiking around Jordan Pond and Bar Harbor
This is my last Acadia video. After spending 10 days hiking, climbing, and exploring places (and avoiding crowds) you return home and inevitably get peppered with questions like “but, did you see the Jordan Pond House and Bar Harbor?” Rather than answer “no”, it’s best to check them out. But for me the best part of hiking the Jordan Pond Path was looking up at the mountains on all 3 sides of the pond and knowing that I had climbed to the top of all of them.

Sunset on the Sand Bar, Aug. 27th, 2011, Bar Harbor to Bar Island, Mount Desert Island, Maine
The fog rolls in around Bar Island as the tide covers the sand bar that connects it to Bar Harbor. Blaze the dog plays fetch in the surf while kayaks return from their tour. My three dogs take-in all the sights. Clouds brought in by Hurricane Irene are starting to form.

Mountain Biking the Carriage Roads in Acadia National Park - Bar Harbor, Maine
Today we are visiting the stunning Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Maine. Much to my chagrin there is no mountain biking on the island, but of course that wasn’t enough to stop me from finding an excuse to ride. Way back in the early 20th century a vast network of crushed stone roads were built throughout Acadia National Park for the use of hikers, horse riders, and most importantly, bikers. No cars allowed thank you very much. These trails, commonly referred to as the “Carriage Roads” are in my option one of the coolest ways to experience the park, soak in its beautiful features all while pedaling your little heart out.
But I wasn’t alone for this adventure. My wife and our good friends Jon, Judy, and their daughter all saddled up for our 20 mile, five and a half hour tour of the Carriage Roads.
Along the way we stopped at a handful of the beautiful, granite bridges built throughout the carriage roads. Each one was individually designed with the intent to both blend into the background and be a work of art to admire all on their own.
Once you are done checking out the bridges be sure to plan ahead so you can grab lunch at the Jordan Pond House. This restaurant is right inside the park, has a sweet name, and the expectedly fantastic views are matched by delicious food and drink.
The week we spend exploring the park is something I look forward to doing every year. I am so glad that this year I was able to share our biking adventure with you. If you want to see more videos like this one click subscribe and drop me a note below what you thought of Acadia National Park.
Thank you so much for watching. Now it’s your turn, get out there and ride.
