The overnight 14 Coast Starlight (Amtrak) from Los Angeles to Seattle.
--3 states
--1,377 miles

--29 stops (a few afford a chance for some fresh air, for a few minutes)
--incalculable jaw drops at the beauty seen from along the ocean coastline to the snowy mountain ranges and backdoor views of towns and cities.
I can't recommend this enough! What an experience! What a way to see the country! The whole ride was smooth, quiet, and tranquil. Whether you enjoy a book in the glass-domed car while sipping on some coffee, or nurse a beer through the passing majesty outside your window, you are rocked gently into a relaxation that is unlike any other. The staff was ever ready to accommodate needs and/or wants. Guest speakers rode along, regaling passengers with tales of the flora, fauna, and history of the areas. Fellow passengers were in equal states of awe and wonder, evidenced by the acknowledging head tilts complete with twinkling eyes and hearty grins. Childhood fancy was stirred together with an aged appreciation and I found that though we were moving northward, time had stood still.
Note: Yes...I have since learned to refrain from filming in portrait mode, when using a phone. ????
Note: Thank you, all, who have clarified that it's a Lounge Car featured in this video, not an actual Parlour Car. I did not intend to mislead anyone; during our ride, the staff and fellow passengers were calling it the Parlour Car, and I was at fault for following the flock in my understanding. Our train's Parlour Car must have been undergoing maintenance, at the time. I did find, however, the Lounge Car to be quite enjoyable. Nevertheless, I imagine riding with an official Parlour Car would enhance the experience, greatly. Thank you all, for clarifying this, for me and for others.
Note: for mobile device viewers, annotations don't appear on-screen. At the 2:28 mark, it should be noted that There is a traditional door on this bathroom; it's just not visible, here.

2018 Amtrak Cross Country Train Trip - Florida to Oregon
Taking the train cross country was something I'd always wanted to do. A bucket list trip. So, I booked a one way ticket to Florida, and traveled back home to Oregon on the rail.
My goal was to document the trip, but it's hard to capture the full experience.
I talked a lot about my trip on the Experiences You Should Have podcast:
I thought it would be helpful to answer some questions:
// What Music Did You Use? //
Andy White:
Gramatik:
AllttA:
// How much did the trip cost? //
The train ticket was $369, coach seats the whole trip. Sleeper cars can range anywhere from $200 to as much as $1,000 per leg of the trip, depending on the time of year.
// How long did it take, and what was the route? //
The train left Orlando, Florida on Monday evening, and it arrives in Portland, Oregon on Friday Morning. So 4 nights total. My trip was a bit farther as I had to go from Portland, Oregon to Chemult, Oregon, which arrived Friday evening.
Orlando---Washington DC---Chicago---Portland
// Were you on the train the entire time? //
No. There were two extended layovers - one in Washington DC for about 9 hours. There is a metro station at Union Station - so easy access to get anywhere you need to go. In Chicago, my layover was about 5.5 hours. Enough time to get out, see some sights and get some food. You can check your bags at the train stations as well, for about $10.
// What were some must have items on the train? //
Ear plugs. Eye mask. Those two in particular. Ear plugs to drown out the noise of other passengers, the noise of the train on the rails, the train horn. Crucial. Eye mask because there are lights in the train at night. It's dim like an airplane would be, but still lighting here and there.
Snacks. Tablet. Headphones. Chargers. Each seat has 2 110V outlets, and each of the tables in the observation cars do as well, so power is never an issue. Neck pillow. Blanket.
// You didn't mention the food. How was the food? //
I would say that train food is slightly better than airplane food. The menu in the dining car on all of the trains was the same - so it did get a bit old. For breakfast, prices ranged from $8 to $14, lunch $12-$15 and dinner $16-$25. There is also a snack bar that has candy, snacks, drinks (beer and wine), as well as some sandwiches and burgers. The service in the dining car was very good, and the staff were all very friendly. Traveling alone, meals in the dining car were always fun because you're typically paired with 1-3 strangers. So you're typically exchanging stories for around an hour. Here is a link to the dining page on Amtrak:
// Sleeping in coach. Was it that bad? //
I'd say, yes. If it were an overnight trip, not so bad. Even 2 nights. But by night 3 and 4 - it started to take a toll. The first 2 nights of the trip I had someone in the seat right next to me. That changes the experience quite a bit, as it's pretty close quarters. Having two seats to yourself makes a pretty big difference. Not in comfort as much as just feeling a bit of privacy. Comfort wise, it's just difficult to really get comfortable in those seats. There's not really any getting around that. Ear plugs and and eye mask are pretty invaluable.
// How were the bathrooms? Were there showers? //
The bathrooms were similar to an airplane bathroom. And there were plenty of bathrooms, so you never felt like you had to hurry, or had someone waiting for you. There was also a larger bathroom with a bit more space with a changing area. No showers. There are showers in the sleeper cars if you went that route.
// What about your belongings? Were they safe? //
I had a backpack with camera gear, tablet, headphones, chargers, etc. that I kept with me 90% of the time. Generally, I felt like my things would have been safe on my seat - but better safe than sorry. My carry on luggage (airplane overhead bin size) - I kept in storage racks on the bottom level of the train. In theory, anyone could have grabbed it and stepped off the train at their stop, but it made it with me the whole trip.

Villa de l'or is named for the bountiful treasures this banner estate offers - amazing privacy, exceptional views of the three mountains - Mt St Helens, Mt Adams and Mt Hood, offering old-world formality blended with modern living and luxury. A compound built with entertaining in mind, the sprawling main residence has a welcoming entry, formal living and dining rooms designed in royal fashion.
Not to be outdone, there is a second warm and welcoming family room and an additional dining room. French doors lead from much of the main floor out to back of the property which faces east. Here, the patio and east lawn are level and spacious, and the possibilites of parties, receptions and dinners in this space are limitless. The Pool Salon offers a shady respite after a day of sun and swimming, as well as an additional outdoor entertaining option. Overlooking the pool, and additional patio areas and plantings, the views of the valley and majestic Mt Hood create a perfect and welcoming backdrop for any event.
The small winding stone path to the north leads down a little hill to the Wine building. Looking at the exterior offers the feel of being on a hill in the Tuscan sun. Once inside this building, the vast collection of wine is a whole other vision of beauty! Carefully controlled temperatures, and a comfortable space to enjoy the fruits of the valley!
The Bar area off of the living room has the feeling of a private club, and it offers access into the theater room and the private Gym. The master suite on the main floor offers a new definition of the words Master Suite. With a private sitting area, the boudoir is truly a sanctuary of peace and tranquility. French doors open to a private patio, and the master bath feels like a true spa experience, complete with spa tub and walk in shower.
The Kitchen is a cook's paradise with every convenience. A Professional-grade Viking stove and oven, dual freezers, two pantries and a restaurant-style walk-in refrigeration unit. The extensive cooking island is expansive and flanked by two sinks and two dishwashers. For the outdoor cooking enthusiast, there is even a covered Benihana - style cooking center on the south patio.
There are three additional en-suites on the main floor, and three separate sets of stairs lead to the additional 10 bedrooms and bathrooms. There is also a very comfortable family room on the landing of the main staircase with built-ins and a cozy vibe.
The long and winding driveway leads down the hill to the stable, and horse arena. Across the way, the 4 acre Vineyard on the hills is drenched in southern exposure and is primed for expansion. The current vineyard yield offers a 50 case bounty of liquid Oregon excellence.
Parking for multiple vehicles is bountiful and there is also a private garage space for vehicles as well as several other private accesses/entrances to the home. This property is highly secure, with state of the art security and 24 hours surveillance and video monitoring. All this and more, and less than 30 minutes from both downtown Portland and the Portland International Airport!

The 10 SNOBBIEST CITIES in AMERICA
When it comes to being a snob, there are all types. You’ve got music snobs, instagram snobs, wine snobs, and of course, political snobs.
And yes, there’s even city snobs, as in ‘I’m better than you because I live in a particular city.’
The goal today is to see which cities have the most snobs of all. We’re gonna get a little bit of every type of snob in America. Some west coast liberal snobs, southern charm snobs, east coast political snobs, and of course, the smarty pants snobs.
To determine the snobbiest states in America, we had to measure snobby things, based on the number of snobby factors in each metro area. You know, the places where people are wealthy, live in big homes, attend theaters, shop at organic markets, and send their kids to private school. We even measured which states have the most college graduates.
Most of these cities have a lot of snobby, elitist people who make snobby their hobby.
So turn up your pinkies as we go through America’s Snobbiest Cities.
10. Washington, DC
Ah, look at what we have here. Our first stop we make drops by the home of the wealthy east coast elite, the Washington DC snob. Otherwise known as the social status snob.
Oh, and here are their snobby little children.
In DC, it’s very important that you make sure everyone knows you have plans for the weekend, that you’ve been to the latest restaurant to open in the neighborhood, and that you have a maid, laundry service, or food delivered every night.
9. Boulder, Colorado
Would you believe that the average home cost in Boulder is $630k a year? It’s true. Being able to afford to live here alone creates a certain level of snootiness among the Colorado elite. Many have described Boulder as an outdoorsy, hippie aristocracy.
8. Seattle, California
Let’s take a peek into the lives of the west coast snob. This is a newer creature who perhaps made his or her money in tech or a startup. The Seattle snobs complain about the homeless, and the cost of living, but they’re part of the problem themselves.
Of course, there’s a lot of Coffee snobs here in Seattle, home of the snobbiest culinary restaurant on earth, Starbucks. But Seattleites will look down on your pumpkin spice latte in favor of the offblend Egyptian variety they got at whole foods or at the farmers market.
And, Nordstrom is headquartered here. That’s so snobtastic.
7. Charleston, South Carolina
There are art museums and private schools up the wazoo in Charleston. And in case you didn’t know, the cost of a house in Charleston proper is more than us regular 99 percenters can afford.
Plus, downtown Charleston has perhaps the highest concentration of snobby retail in the nation.
Just a quick search shows us places like Louis and J Crew.
6. Pasadena, CA
Pasadena calls itself crown city, which means they are coronating themselves as elitists. Here you’ll find the 3rd highest number of private schools in the nation, 4th most theaters per capita, and one of the wealthiest enclaves in the country, too.
What, you haven’t heard of this fine place, Pasadena? Have you ever watched the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day? That’s in Pasadena.
5. Berkeley, CA
Berkeleyites are so much smarter, more sophisticated, progressive, and way more learned than you and I. In fact, Berkeley was called the 5th brainiest city in the entire country by a somewhat reputable source we found on Google.
4. Los Angeles, CA
Have you ever been to LA? As if. This is the center of all that is snobberific. Even downtown LA, which used to be a total dump, is on the snob upswing. Places like West Hollywood, West LA, Brentwood, Westwood, Pacific Palisades, Manhattan Beach, Playa Del Rey...there are snobs all over the place.
3. Portland, Oregon
Spend a weekend in Portland, and you’ll run into all sorts of people in the snob family tree. There’s wine snobs, coffee snobs, beer snobs, farmers market snobs.
2. Cambridge, Massachusetts
There’s one big reason Cambridge is on this list. It starts with an S and ends in MART. These folks are just geniuses. They’re spoiled with culture, too.
Not only do families in Cambridge command relatively big salaries, over two-thirds of the residents in Cambridge have a college degree. This is home to Harvard University, after all.
1. San Francisco, CA
The median home price here is $1.7 million. And that’s the median price. Those were the home prices when I wrote this, you can bet they went up again by the time you’re watching this video.
Besides the high home prices and the inflated egos that come with a booming tech scene, it’s also one of the smartest places in the country too.
This channel talks about America, different states, education, travel, geography and what it's like to live in different places in America.

Unique Unprecedented Home in New York, New York | Sotheby's International Realty
Presented by Sotheby's International Realty - East Side Manhattan Brokerage
For more information go to
The result of unprecedented thought, care, and attention to detail, this peerless 4,300-square-foot apartment is undoubtedly one of the healthiest homes in New York. Three years of planning and construction resulted in this irreplaceable property, which enjoys panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline from its perch high above the Upper West Side and steps from Lincoln Center and Central Park.
The home has a truly unique aesthetic—the work of Tony Ingrao, a member of Architectural Digest’s elite AD 100. Every detail is completely new and thoughtfully considered, from hand-selected wood—sycamore, white oak, Douglas fir, and caleidolengo—to the cleanest materials and the highest-caliber fixtures and finishes. All paint, finishes, and sealants were strictly vetted. A Ketra lighting system modulates spectrum and brightness according to circadian rhythms; color and scheme can be varied to suit any mood or entertaining theme. The residence is completely hypo-allergenic and features a whole-house humidification system, high-end UV-blocking windows, and an advanced triple-osmosis water-filtration system for perfectly pure showers, baths, and drinking water. The entire home benefits from high-speed Wi-Fi, and every room—including the master bath and shower—has been outfitted with a discreet speaker system. A Savant whole-house-automation system controls heating, air conditioning, music, lighting, and blinds.
Three apartments were combined to create the distinctive floor plan, which offers spectacular living spaces and up to four bedrooms. Entertaining is easy in the central living room, which includes a stainless-steel fireplace and a handsome wet bar with cerused Douglas fir cabinetry, a custom sink, and a Sub-Zero wine cooler. The formal dining area features a strikingly artful light fixture and enjoys stunning views of the skyline and Central Park through walls of windows. Sleek and streamlined, the kitchen exemplifies state-of-the-art style and features exceptional finishes such as heated leathered-stone floors, limestone countertops, Dornbracht fixtures, and tile and plaster walls. Two Wolf ovens, a Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer, a Gaggenau dishwasher and induction cooktop, and a built-in automatic espresso machine are among the top-tier appliances. An inviting casual dining space with built-in seating and whimsical lighting is tucked into a windowed corner of the kitchen, creating a backdrop of enviable Manhattan vistas. In a thoughtful touch that allows for maximum privacy and convenience, two drop-down electronic dividers separate the kitchen from the living area and the den.
Spanning more than 2,000 square feet, the master suite is a chic and serene oasis with a subdued natural palette, oversized windows affording glorious natural light and expansive views across Central Park, and a wall designed for art or a wide-screen television. The lavish spa-inspired bath includes a stunning walk-in steam shower and jetted soaking tub clad in striking Mediterranean Blue quartzite, a vanity with oversized mirrors and Fantini fixtures, a private water closet, and heated floors and towel racks. The suite also encompasses an oversized walk-in closet with a built-in safe, a custom home gym and yoga room, and a relaxing personal sauna with its own park view. Peace, privacy, and discretion are easily maintained thanks to the suite’s internal hallway.
Each of the home’s additional light-filled bedrooms has a unique character, with ample storage, hidden blinds, blackout shades, and city views. The colorful family living area features a full wall of shelves and custom cabinetry along with space for an 85-inch television. An office with automatic standing desks, a striking powder room, and a handy mudroom complete this comprehensive one-of-a-kind home. The location of the flagship Equinox fitness club in the building is an added amenity. Apartment can be purchased with or without furniture.
