ON THE ROAD, YOUNG MEDIA ARTISTS IN CHINA HK
On the Road is a unique, annual project initiated in 2014 by the Guan Shanyue Art Museum, Shenzhen, here seen in its 2018 version. The process involves 15 curators, art critics, and scholars, from major institutions, art schools and museums throughout China and Hong Kong, proposing a selection of promising young Chinese artists. This collective curatorial process results in the creation of an impressive “nomination exhibition” from which a final selection of the best 20-30 works is then made.
This year, for the first time in its history, the annual On the Road exhibition is dedicated to New Media Art. With the title Young Media Artists in China, the 30 or so works selected by the nominating committee (along with 6 contributions by the faculty of the School of Creative Media, CityU) provide a stimulating and exciting overview of the media art scene across China today, and demonstrates how young Chinese artists are exploring, manipulating, and playing with media, often combining both older and ‘newer’ media to new ends.
During the past 10 years the new media art scene has grown in size and quality in a country highly receptive to innovation. China’s own rich and unique history of image-making, painting and calligraphy, offers a tradition where time and space, black and white, sound and silence are often juxtaposed in a subtle dialogue made up of contrasts and complicity. Building on this tradition, with diverse and modern sensibilities, young Chinese media artists are digging new paths that leave firm tracks across the ever-changing field of contemporary art.

Eric Cheng, a Hong Kong student and a graduate from the Beijing-based Central Academy of Fine Arts, decided to open a gallery in Beijing to provide a platform for young artists. Lecture–Revisiting Harvard’s Early Chinese Jades with Jenny So
Lecture: “Rare and Beautiful Objects, New and Unexpected Findings: Revisiting Harvard’s Early Chinese Jades.”
More than 40 years after Max Loehr published the first comprehensive catalogue of the Grenville L. Winthrop collection of archaic Chinese jades, the Harvard Art Museums present a new book featuring highlights of the collection by Jenny F. So. To mark this new publication, So shares how her research and ideas have benefited from the nearly half-century of archaeological discoveries and technical investigations related to jade, and the surprises that came with hands-on object study. She also discusses the broader questions raised by this new knowledge and their relevance in collection-based teaching and research at a university museum such as Harvard’s.
So’s research into the collection—which spans China’s Neolithic to late Bronze Age (c. 4000–100 BCE) and beyond—reveals the sociopolitical, philosophical-religious contexts for the creation of jade artifacts, the importance of the material to object shape and state of preservation, and some of the reasons behind the lasting impact of jade in Chinese society throughout subsequent millennia. While the book relays this narrative in more detail, in her lecture So will focus on a few outstanding examples to illustrate some of these issues.
“Early Chinese Jades in the Harvard Art Museums (2019)” by Jenny So will be available in the Harvard Art Museums shop, beginning in February 2019. Visitors are invited to also view the early Chinese art galleries on Level 1 at the Harvard Art Museums.
Jenny F. So received her B.A. from Swarthmore College, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in art history from Harvard University. She has served as senior curator of Ancient Chinese Art at the Freer and Sackler Galleries, the Smithsonian Institution, in charge of the rich holdings of both collections. She left the Smithsonian Institution to take up the position of professor of fine arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and later, was also appointed director of that university’s Institute of Chinese Studies and Art Museum. She retired from her full-time Hong Kong appointments in 2015, retaining an association as adjunct professor, and returned to live in Arlington, Virginia, where she continues to publish while serving as a specialist-consultant in Chinese art for American and international educational and commercial institutions.
Support for the lecture is provided by the M. Victor Leventritt Fund, which was established through the generosity of the wife, children, and friends of the late M. Victor Leventritt, Harvard Class of 1935. The purpose of the fund is to present outstanding scholars of the history and theory of art to the Harvard and Greater Boston communities.

Asia Art Archive Chair Jane DeBevoise Lectures on Hong Kong's Cultural Scene in Montreal
On January 23, 2013, Jane DeBevoise, chair of the board of directors of Asia Art Archive in Hong Kong and New York, delivered the lecture Hong Kong as Cultural Construction Site: A View from Asia Art Archive at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal. The talk was part of the Asia Contemporary Speaker Series, a partnership between the Canadian Art Foundation and the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada's National Conversation on Asia and its sponsors. This video documents her complete Montreal lecture.
Before moving to Hong Kong in 2002, DeBevoise was deputy director of the Guggenheim Museum, where she was responsible for museum operations and exhibitions globally. She joined the museum in 1996 as project director of China: 5000 Years (1998), a blockbuster exhibition of traditional and modern Chinese art that was presented at the Guggenheim museums in New York and Bilbao. Prior to 1996, DeBevoise was managing director at Bankers Trust Company, where she worked for 14 years in New York, Hong Kong, Tokyo and London. DeBevoise holds a BA from Tufts University, an MA from the University of California, Berkeley, and a PhD from the University of Hong Kong, all in art history. She was appointed by the Home Affairs Bureau of the Hong Kong government to the Committee for Museums from 2004 to 2007 and to the Museums Advisory Group for the development of the West Kowloon Cultural District from 2006 to 2007. She is also a trustee of the Asian Cultural Council, New York.
The Asia Contemporary Speaker Series explores the rise of Asia on the international scene as one of the most compelling stories in contemporary art. Provocative artworks command ever-higher prices as markets expand, and impressive new museums, schools and biennials continue to proliferate. Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai, Tokyo and Beijing have established themselves as major art-world hubs, competing directly with London and New York. In order to understand this phenomenon and its connection to global movements of economic and political power, the Asia Contemporary Speaker Series will bring five recognized leaders in the field to speak in cities across Canada in 2012 and 2013. The Works:The Works in Taiwan II: Taipei Biennial, Re-base & Ink Now, in the studio: zheng player Bo
We’re beginning by continuing our trip to Taiwan. Last week, we introduced the first edition of Taipei Dangdai, a contemporary art fair that aims primarily to appeal to the Taiwanese market but that’s inevitably brought a lot of international attention to the island’ art scene and art collectors. Other than art fair like Taipei Dangdai that focuses on the art market, Taiwan is also full of creative entities that reflect the socio-political situations of the country.
The Himalayan region is known as the “roof of the world”. It is home to Tibetans, Nepalese, Bhutanese, Gurkhas and the Ladakh people. They are connected not only by the area’s unique landscape but also by similar religious beliefs. On show at the art museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Institute of Chinese Studies, “Jewels of Transcendence: Himalayan and Mongolian Treasures” showcases more than 400 exquisite ornaments and religious objects, from the 13th through 20th centuries, that come from the Mongolian and Himalayan regions.
China Daily Asia Video: Hong Kong: An Art Center
Home to the third-largest art market in the world by auction value after New York and London, and to the world's largest museum under construction, M+, the tall, small city of Hong Kong is rapidly becoming an art mecca. Aesthetic attractions adorn its streets, outdoor parks and even public transport, while its exhibition roster is the envy of any global metropolis. All of which leaves citizens with only one consideration: what is, or isn't, art? Lin Jing reports.
