ABOUT THE EVENT
The Portland Art Museum and artist Eric Steen present Art & Beer: Pitchering Oregon, a statewide exploration of landscape, art, place, and history, through the lens of Oregon craft beer and cider making. Art & Beer: Pitchering Oregon brings together a diverse lineup of 18 Oregon craft brewers paired with 18 artworks from the Museum’s permanent collection.
The selected artworks represent or evoke a range of Oregon landscapes including Greater Portland, the Coast, Willamette Valley, the Columbia River Gorge/Mount Hood, Central, Eastern, and Southern parts of the state. Brewers from each of these regions are creating one-of-a-kind beers inspired by the artists and the surrounding landscapes represented in their selected artworks. When experienced together, the beers will collectively create a drinkable portrait of one of the most geographically diverse and beautiful states in the U.S.
The event’s title is a play on words, and is presented in conjunction with the similarly titled exhibition Picturing Oregon, a rotating display of over 50 paintings and photographs showcasing the diversity of Oregon landscapes and places from the past 125 years. This exhibition is currently on view in the Northwest galleries.
In addition to the grand tasting, other General Admission activities include:
Informal brewer and curator chats alongside the featured artworks
Museum docent tours of beverage-themed art
A sensory/smell experience highlighting local/regional ingredients from around the state

Oregon: A Craft Beer Road Trip
Oregon is a mecca for craft beer lovers (like yours truly) but what’s the best way to experience it all? An Oregon craft beer road trip! Our Oregon road trip included stops at some of the Pacific Northwest’s most delicious breweries including De Garde Brewing, Sedition Brewing Company, Hair of the Dog and at least a dozen more. We also hit up some of Oregon’s most beautiful scenery like Multnomah Falls and Smith Rock State Park, and – last but by no means least – we had a sloth encounter at Oregon’s Sloth Center, which was a dream come true. We fed, pet and played with sloths. Hello, heaven.
To get a full run-down of this epic Oregon craft beer road trip, check out my detailed post over on the blog:

Drinking Beer at 2pm on a Monday - Ancestry Brewing
There's nothing better than drinking beer at 2pm on a Monday.
I had the privilege of going on a brewery tour with Jerry, Owner of Ancestry Brewing and his son and General Manger, Jeremy. To say that it was an amazing experience would be a sever understatement.
My wife and I are already happy customers of Ancestry, but hearing the stories behind their space and approach to brewing beer just solidifies this place as one of our favorites.
It's amazing how much stories can deepen a relationship with a brand, a business and a delicious product.
An amazing description from their website:
At Ancestry Brewing, we are building a lineage of family crafted ales, one brew at a time. We pride ourselves on paying attention to detail and quality. We are greatly humbled to be joining a community of Oregon breweries that arguably produce the best beer on the planet. For a small brewery, we have a beautiful selection of hops that include Citra, Mosaic, Galaxy, El Dorado, EKG, Simcoe, and Amarillo to name a few. These fantastic hops will find their homes in our primary 3 Pillars of beer - American, English, and Belgian. Each of these categories will be complimented by our cask and barrel program that we plan to grow over time.
You can find our beers on tap in one of our two locations, around town, or in one of our pre-filled growlers. Our growlers are unique in that they go through the same process as a bottle of beer. Our customers can expect a beer that has maintained quality and freshness while stored over a matter of weeks, not days. If a bottled growler is not fresh enough for you, we invite you to come see our brewery and get a pour straight from our Zwickels. We pride ourselves on connecting with our customers better than any brewery out there! We will soon be implementing an Ale Club, special tastings, brew days, and home brew competitions. We are excited for you to join the family!

In The Loop Quick Looks - Chicago's Craft Beer Craze
Chicago is emerging as a national leader in the exploding business of craft beer. The second city is second only to Portland, Oregon, in the number of craft breweries--more than 150. And, according to Crain’s, more commercial real estate is devoted to independent brewing here than in any other city in the country.

The Brewery Everyone Is Talking About In Your State
Sometimes grabbing a cold one at your localsports barjust won't cut it. Instead, go straight to the source and have a drink at one of the best breweries in America to sample endless varieties of beer on tap and peek behind the scenes of the beer-making process on a brewery tour.
Glacier BrewHouse, AnchorageGreat beer, and possibly the best fish I have ever had. Get the sockeye or halibut, both incredible!
Good People Brewing Company, BirminghamSome of the best beers in Birmingham. The newly renovated taproom is amazing, with an outdoor area.
Lost Forty Brewing, Little RockExcellent atmosphere, great food and even better beer. The pimento cheese is a must order.
Mother Road Brewing Company, FlagstaffWhat a great find! Very friendly bartender, nice interior with a hipsterish vibe and, most importantly, great homebrewed beer!
AleSmith Brewing Company, San DiegoGreat place to taste seasonal and special editions. They also offer tours if you are interested.
Odell Brewing Company, Fort CollinsExcellent, excellent brewery! Friendly staff, great beer, and a beautiful outdoor space.
Two Roads Brewing Company, StratfordOne of my new favorite breweries. Delicious beer, food trucks outside, and they'll even send a bus to pick you up from the train station.
DC Brau Brewing Co, Washington D.C.Took a tour and learned a lot about canning beer that I didn't know before. They have a great double IPA.
Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, MiltonThey treat you like kings and queens. Four free beer samples before a free tour, plus if you are lucky enough you'll get to see the owner, Sam Calagione.
Cigar City Brewing, TampaI have yet to try a beer that I don't like ... including IPAs and I'm not normally a huge fan. Good Gourd is fantastic.
Monday Night Brewery, AtlantaOne of my favorite place to have fun with my friends and great outside seating, music and beers. Great atmosphere and friendly staff.
Kona Brewing Co. & Brewpub, KailuaOne of my favorite breweries ... food is good here and they try to use local ingredients, but what is best is they serve many beers that they only make available in Hawaii. Like Lavaman Red Ale.
Confluence Brewing Company, Des MoinesDelicious beer, my favorite local spot, watch for food trucks in front, and accessible from the bike path. - Foursquare userRobbie Helzer
10 Barrel Brewing, BoiseCasual, great for warmer weather with the semi-outdoor seating. Delicious food and phenomenal beer!
Revolution Brewing, ChicagoRevolution is a premier microbrewery in Chicago, and the tap house is the perfect place to shake a fist at conventional beer. With tons of beers on tap I recommend starting with their Anti-Hero!
Sun King Brewing Co., IndianapolisCome here to find the best brews in Indy! Also, while you're here check out their tours and get yourself a growler.
Free State Brewing Company, LawrenceA Lawrence, KS. must stop ... one of the best places in Kansas to stop for lunch or dinner and award-winning beers.
Braxton Brewing Company, CovingtonTruly the tap room of the future! Great guys running an amazing brewery in historic Covington Kentucky.
NOLA Brewing, New OrleansAwesome IPAs, extremely knowledgable staff and great BBQ to perfectly compliment your beer. Overall great experience.
Samuel Adams Brewery, BostonFree tours every 40 minutes. Great atmosphere, very funny and gentle guides and free beer after the tour.
Union Craft Brewing, BaltimoreLove sitting in the beer garden on a nice summer day. Great brews and often a tasty food truck!
Allagash Brewing Company, PortlandGreat (free) tour with an amazing beer tasting at the end! Put yourself on the wait list if you didn't get a spot on the tour, they will often squeeze you in.
Short's Brewing Company, BellaireQuite possibly the best craft beer being produced in the U.S. And, the food at the pub is inspired and the staff is great in every way. Don't miss this stop!!!!!
Surly Brewing Company, MinneapolisThe best craft beer and unique food selection. Food is higher end and not typical bar fare.
Boulevard Brewing Co, Kansas CityTake the Smokestack tour. Worth every penny.
Crooked Letter Brewing Company, Ocean SpringsGreat tour - much more than your normal brewery tour. A lot of chemistry but they dumb it down.
Tamarack Brewing Company, LakesideThis place has a great porch to eat and drink. Not only that but the staff is friendly and the place overall had a sense of humor (they have an am-brew-lance).
Fullsteam Brewery, DurhamReally enjoyed the variety of beers here! They also have a great selection of board games to play while you drink.
The Fargo Brewing Company, FargoGet the wood chipper IPA and make sure to try the specialty keg that changes weekly! - Foursquare userCasey Hillrud
Lucky Bucket Brewing Company & Cut Spike Distillery, La VistaTours are a fun way to try a few brews and pours while learning more about the beer manufacturing process. - Foursquare userSarah Davelaar

Cider Riot Complete Cider Tasting in Portland Oregon
Portland is a great place in fact the whole State of Oregon is pretty awesome. It has a lot to love including some amazing cider producers. Long time friend and boozy compatriot Abram Goldman-Armstrong is producing a wide variety of excellent cider on NE Couch. From the humble beginnings in his Garage Cider Riot! has grown into it’s current commercial space with an expansive tasting bar and patio. In a town with a ridiculous amount of top-notch beer and wine, Abe is adding another level of beverage depth to this City. This was Jesse’s first visit and he got the full experience including cellar tour and horizontal and vertical tastings in the private room. It was a real boozy education! There was a lot of delicious cider consumed and it was probably a good thing that it was a short walk to our dinner at Pigeon. Oh yeah, while we were waiting for our table, we walked across the street to Burnside Brewery to partake in the Fruit Beer Festival… oh Portland, we love you. Viva Cascadia!
